Playing Sterling vs the mighty Newcastle but resting him vs minnows Real Madrid? I know you have Chelsea coming up but that is a baffling decision at best.

I'm not so sure, I'd personally rather play him against Newcastle than Real Madrid - more chance of getting points in the league than in the Champions league

Considering we're quite heavy underdogs for the Madrid game I can see why he's being left out, as having Sterling in the team might not make much difference anyway, but he could be vital in getting a result against Chelsea, and could have against Newcastle.

Resting key players in the champions league so you have a better chance of qualifying for the champions league? :p

Why can't players play twice in one week? ******* joke of a lineup from rodgers away to madrid and he decides to play a carling cup side.

Good to see Rodgers has decided to throw away all of last season's hard work to qualify for the CL after 3 games competing in it.

Spin it however you like liverpool fans not all because some are royally ****** off and should be, but not a single reason to why rodgers couldn't have picked his best 11 for both games this week, it's novemeber ffs not april.

It's not, if you think about it.

Things aren't going the way he planned this year. You've brought in some players and lost your best, things aren't sitting right, so now he's planning on giving it another go next year and the only way to make that a possibility, is by planning early and concentrating on the league.

I can see both sides of this argument.

First of all, I was upset when I heard the rumours of the lineup, and even more so when I saw them confirmed. This looks a lot like admitting defeat before the game has even started, doesn't it?

On the other hand, I've seen every Liverpool game so far this season, and I missed maybe 1 or 2 last season. It's been dreadful this season, with just one exception (Spurs). Last game against Newcastle was one of the worst performances I've seen under Rodgers, maybe the worst. With that in mind, why not give other players a chance?

Borini did well against Swansea, and Balotelli has been horrible. I have no qualms with letting Borini start.
Even Sterling was poor against Newcastle, but then again, why play him on the right? He needs to play on the left or in the middle, end of discussion.

And let's face it, we're gonna be doing a lot of defending today no matter who plays. And there's no doubt Lucas is better at defending than Gerrard is.

I'm not sure about this, I'm a bit ambivalent. I just have a really bad feeling about the scoreline, and I'm picturing 5+ goals to Real and 0 to Liverpool. That could remove whatever shred of confidence is still left in the squad.

Rodgers should have to give an explanation for that team he has put out! there is Wed,Thu,Fri before his team play again! to leave out Sterling,Gerrard,Johnson,Henderson against Real Madrid - Whats the point in qualifying for the champions league if you are not going to try and win games in it regardless of opposition

I think if I were one of the benched players I'd be disappointed as a player especially after being humbled at anfield you'd want the chance to set the record straight but not only that you don't get many chances to play at the Bernabeu.

Mignolet with two good saves so far though and have started fairly decent

LFC's aims at the start of the season were top 4 and to qualify from CL group. Tonight's game will not, if realistic, affect either. Chelsea may do

Adding to the fact we have been terrible, played our 'strongest' side and got turned over 3-0 with relative ease against Madrid last side... I'm not too fussed with Rodgers' selection

Tbf pool still right in this only one nil and can make some good subs

I think Madrid have been fairly poor tbh. Slow poor passing in final 3rd and a lot of sideways passing, also giving ball away cheaply.

I think the side picked are definitely more mobile and are pressing very well, making it hard for Madrid

Yeah, but we have had 2 shots in 57 mins, only 1 on target. Ah well, could be exactly like FM, eh?

Has to be expected at the Bernabeu.. most teams that get something have done so through a smash and grab
