LFC's aims at the start of the season were top 4 and to qualify from CL group. Tonight's game will not, if realistic, affect either. Chelsea may do

You just don't play second squad vs. Real Madrid man. You just don't. Its a disrespect to the fans more then anything else. What's the point of going into CL if not for the fans to see their team try their best in games like this?

I do love all the stick Rodgers is getting. You get a squad of 25 men in the CL and he can pick who he wants. I think it was well justified because (defensively at least) that's one of the best we have been in a long time. Moreno had a good game, mignolet was fantastic, and I never thought I would say this but Kolo Toure was immense.

Yes Real weren't at their best, but against arguably the best team in the world with a "reserve" squad I think it is a good result

Opinions, ey? This second squad did considerably better than the first

Don't forget Lucas! He was covering a lot of ground and positioned himself very well. I was a bit disappointed that Rodgers chose to sub Lucas instead of Allen, whom I feel was the weakest out there today.

I think it was due to a Gerrard-Lucas partnership which has proven to not work.. It was no way down to performance as Lucas was very good tonight

It can work if Gerrard is moved higher up, but only then. And coming on so late in the game, I don't see why he shouldn't have been pushed higher up.

Nah, gotta play the first team in crucial losses vs Newcastle. It's ok though, Sterling's fresh legs will totally carry them vs Chelsea at the weekend and Rodgers' will be vindicated.

One thing that has come from tonight is some good performances from those who were on the fringes recently.

Looking forward to Saturday I would start both Manquillo and Kolo with perhaps a place for either Can/Lucas as well

Notice how only non LFC fans are actually fuming about this.

I'm not going to lie. I swallowed a massive gulp in my throat when I saw the starting line up but the reasons BR done this are obvious. He's not "concentrating on the league this season" as we'll still play our strongest side in the next two games and go through to the knock out phase(hopefully).

The worst thing about it is that we did better with our B team away from home then our strongest team did at Anfield...

It's like Mick Mccarthy playing second team at old trafford as he had more chances of victory in the next game. For a big team like Liverpool it's embarrassing to field second team to save the players for weekend and accepting defeat before the kick off.

Few can dress it up however they want like the performance and scoreline was much better than first leg but the intention was so obvious.

Because they don't wear rose tinted red specs.

IIRC Sterling was playing in a league cup against some bottom league team.

Did you see the 'European royalty' banner that LFC fans had hung in the stadium of the most successfull European team ever? Genuinely lol worthy ... Even more so when Brendan fields a B team

Liverpool fan showing his hand to mock "5 times" in the first leg was more funny. He did to the team that won 10..

I really don't understand the problem with Rodgers team selection. Whether it was because he was resting players or simply picking the team that he thought could do best. Gerrard, Balotelli, Johnson and Lovren have all been below par so far this season.

Gerrard is especially poor when he's required to be defensive and apply pressure, so bringing in Lucas/Can/Allen instead of him was a good move in my opinion. Lovren has been pretty shocking all season so it was nice to see him dropped for once, just a shame it had to be someone of Kolo's ability who replaced him. I actually though Balotelli did ok against Real in the previous game but he just doesn't bring the running or pressure that was needed last night. Henderson had a stinker against Newcastle so maybe he was dropped for that, but out of all of the players who were benched he was the only one who I kinda wish had started.

I thought Rodgers got it pretty much spot on last night with his team selection. Which is a rare occurrence for him these days.

Rodgers under a lot of pressure to get a result against Chelsea now

You were all pumped up for the Madrid games just few weeks ago, and now you're completely fine with playing second squad? Seems legit.

Something is seriously wrong with Rodger's attitude. Yes, he needs to be practical with his selection. But you don't just give up before the kick off when playing vs. best team in the world. Does he not have ambition to test himself vs. someone of Anelotti's stature?

Benitez had even bigger problems with squad depth but he always went for the jugular in those big european games anyways. And I bet that's what everybody expected when Liverpool qualified to CL. And now you're satisfied when Rodgers puts up a white flag?

I bet players were kind of dissapointed with that as well.

That was actually hilarious.. what a fool

I'm not so sure - He has done everything to ensure our 'strongest' side is fit for the game, but in terms of spending, individual quality, wage bill, form etc etc Chelsea still have the upper hand in every area

Unless Liverpool improve dramatically on performances this season anything other than a defeat would be a good result

Oh well, it's gone now and and this supposed weaker side played better than the 'stronger' first - we move on
