The Manchester United Thread

Yeah sorry Alcaraz, you're getting this one wrong. On this thread alone Sunil is in the minority who thinks Rooney should play over Mata. I certainly for one do not think that.

Tbh I said if it's a straight choice between 2 I would say Rooney. I also said that I want Mata and Rooney in the team in place of RVP.

I really don't care playing with the words like ability, natural talent. Sorry if that came out bit arrogantly.

All I care is Rooney as a player was better than Mata IMO and Rooney as a player is better fit for how ManUtd play. Saying that I want Mata and Rooney in the team together along with Falcao. RVP should be on the bench.

Hmm fair enough. I didn't intend to play around with words either mate. For example, I wholeheartedly agree that Oscar should be in the team ahead of Mata when both were at Chelsea. That didn't change the fact that Mata was far superior attacking wise to Oscar but Oscar simply was a better fit in the way Mourinho wanted to play

Robin van Persie's decline could be a good thing for Manchester United - http://t.co/XnhAh7KJIR

I do believe LVG is showing favoritism towards RVP. He looked just as off the pace, limited and offering nothing at the World Cup and continued to play the whole game. Against Mexico subbing him off made the difference as there was more urgency but that was the only time.

He's not match fit, and he is trying to get him fit.

RVP needs match fitness as does Falcao. The only difference is is that RVP has played more football as of late which makes sense to start him more often atm, as of instead just throwing Falcao with next to no training and very few matches in oh and the small case of him recovering from a major injury. Favouritism has nothing to do with it.

Rumours that smalling is also injured again, pmsl if true.

All three of them are made of glass, farce.

If he is injured again then hopefully Van Gaal makes the tough decision to let 2 of them go. Would love to retain Jones and offload Evans and Smalling. We have lost Vidic and Rio who were very good, so Smalling and Evans getting injured was not a big issue, now we don't have enough numbers and still we are losing CBs regularly. Hopefully we sign a CB who can stay fit for a season like Shawcross or Vlaar (i'm just assuming).

So for game against West ham it maybe

Rojo - Blind

Rojo - Thorpe

Rojo - Fletcher.

More likely be Carrick - Rojo, if Carrick has returned to full training. He's been used at CB before too, so would be a better option. Or Blind and Rojo, with Carrick at the deep end of diamond I guess.

But let's face it, this was expected to happen from a long time ago/ Part of the reason why there was clamouring for a new CB. Jones and Evans are both pretty good, but injured way too often. Smalling, when again not injured, is okayish at best. Which is why sending of Micheal Keane on loan didn't make much sense during the window.

Hummels was a pipe dream. Don't get me wrong, he's still my dream CB signing, but pulling off the coup always would be tremendously difficult. I guess the one weird decision was letting Stefan de Vrij slip from our hands. Could have easily gotten him, he's definitely less injury prone compared to our present crop, and can develop into an excellent, silky defender.

Yeah when you consider all 3 are considered as senior CBs it makes sense to offload injury prone players and sign a reliable CBs. Makeshift defense means we will always concede goals.

Interestingly de vrij isn't playing well at Lazio, neither is Indi at Porto (who I wanted). Find good defenders is tough these days

Yeah De Vrij is struggling, maybe he was suited more for a 3 CB system. We need a physical monster player though like Kompany or Mangala. Not saying them but like them.

Also rumors about Pique, even though I feel he is overrated I would take him. At least he can stay fit and pass the ball which is a big plus.

I'd still keep Evans though. Academy product, and when he's not injured, is actually good. Jones staying back is without a question at all. Smalling could probably be offloaded, as long as it is not to rivals (especially Arsenal).

I didn't want Indi, he seemed a bit too rash on the ball, and seemed more of a ball-playing defender. De Vrij seemed more composed;; Shame he's not doing well though(Don't follow Serie A much, so no clue). I'm guessing it's only adaptability issues though, and will probably turn out better once he settles in.. The same can easily be said for Rojo, but opinions about him are always contrary (ranging from 'superb talent-absolute steal' to 'squad player at best')

Btw, How is Garay coping, any idea?

Should be an alternative plan, not the main one. Pique will want crazy wages, and after witnessing our spending in the summer, Barca will want crazy money considering he signed a long term deal till 2019..

But Evans is injured all the time and we can't rely on him even though he is the most senior CB we have. Jones is a no brainer, he should be retained. I'm having doubts on Smalling and Evans. Not about their quality but how risky it is to rely on them considering their fitness issues.

I don't know whether this story has any legs but alternative plan for what? Hummels is not happening for sure.

Alternative plan for Hummels. Reus apparently is refusing to sign a new deal. If he departs next summer, go strongly for Hummels. If Hummels feels frustrated about all the top talent leaving, with the club being unable to retain them, he may feel differently, who knows// Also, depends on their club situation this season.

An alternative was Varane, atleast until he signed his contract..

Should of gone for Vlaar in the summer that's our biggest mistake, now we are feeling the inevitable when players like Smalling/Jones/Evans get injured.

It's no good in this league to make excuses and say "it's hard to find a defender", the reality is our CB position isn't acceptable for a club like us who are aiming to get back into the Champions League, if we miss out there is already a reason why. We should of been in the strongest position possible to return in the CL with a balanced squad, not just addressing all the attacking/midfield options whilst completely forgetting about the heart of our team.

We lost Rio and Vidic and have loaned out M.Keane, brought in 1 half-recognised.... CB.... Rojo. So we're down to utter bare bones in that position.

David De Gea, got nothing against him, but he's not a commanding goalkeeper who fills defences with confidence like Van Der Sar did, so we really needed that kind of figure brought in at the back line, in front of him.

That's because he isnt 30+ years old. He regularly orders the defence around though.
