The Manchester United Thread

Yeah, he's done enough to deserve an extension, but 3 years would've been enough. Given his long and well documented history of meltdowns, 5 year contract is a wee bit optimistic.

Still think Jose's always wanted to be the Sir Alex successor. I feel like this is the peak for him. He's done it all, now he's in the perfect position, with a chance to create a historic "I steered the sinking ship back to glory years" storyline. He has built a young quality spine with De Gea-Bailly-Pogba-Lukaku (average age of 24) to be big players for years to come at this club. Unlike at Chelsea, the overwhelming financial backing is there for him to add signings (marquee as he wishes) every summer, there'd be no post league title (if we're so lucky to lift it some time in the near future) stinginess. Not a dig at Chelsea, they run their club differently these days, not the power spenders of a decade ago and that's fine, but I think Jose's the type that never wants to sit still. Could even feel Conte's frustrations this summer too.

This monster contract with mega bonuses for trophies as an extra incentive, with a gesture of trust shown in the length of the contract, might just be the cherry on top for Mourinho.

Time will tell though

Mourinho gives an injury update
“Michael Carrick I know he cannot play, I know that. Lukaku and Jones looks fine and that’s it.”

Mourinho on the challenge of playing Liverpool
“It’s just one more match, could be the first, could be the eighth or ninth or the last one. Probably if it was the last maybe it would decide something important but October for me is just another match.

“I understand the tradition, the emotions around the supporters but I look at it in a professional way, what I try to tell my players from the beginning of the season is every match is important, there are no easy matches, there are no matches you prepare more carefully than others so if I try this mentality I am not going to say this match is more important than others.

Mourinho on "easy games"
“We have more points. Last season we lost a few points before we played against Liverpool, we lost a point in matches that you considered easy, we lost points at home against Everton, West Ham, we lost points at Southampton, last season we didn’t win them before we play (Liverpool), so we have more points than last season at this stage.

“We are in a better position, we are playing better, we are more confident and have confidence to play but it’s a match I can take from this context, I don’t put Liverpool as a team that is in this moment in the middle of the table because they are not going to be there at the end of the season, I look at the quality of their team, it’s a very different match for us and them.”

Mourinho on the difference from last season vs Liverpool
“Last season we didn’t win three points, we got one but we got one comfortably, without any problems.

“Let’s see what happens this season, we want to win, last season we wanted to win, we couldn’t. This season we want to win.”

Mourinho on Anfield atmosphere
“This is quite funny for me when people speak about big atmospheres it looks like we don’t like, and it’s a problem for us to go to a certain place and to face a big atmosphere.

“This is what we want. I am surprised you speak about that in a negative way, I am surprised when I hear former big players speak about atmospheres like something sinister, it motivates us, if we could have every match we would have every match.

“When Barcelona played against Las Palmas in an empty stadium, do you think the players were happy with that? We are speaking about Old Trafford, Anfield in this case, like it’s a big problem, it’s a satisfaction, it’s what we want, I never see a player complain this atmosphere is very strong, when we don’t play at home and don’t see big enthusiasm with the people, we complain.

Mourinho on his set up
“I play with one defender and nine strikers, don’t worry about it, we play with one guy behind and then we go with a new system and we play with nine strikers, don’t worry about it.”

Brilliant response to suggestions of a “defensive” approach!

I just hope we test that Liverpool defence today (not to mention goalie). In any way Jose sees fit, whether that be long balls or crosses into the box, it doesn't really matter, we just have to test them more than last season.

Not so much pace to worry about without them having Mane, don't need to sit as deep as we did last season, especially the wingers covering the fullbacks.

Play Young to nullify Salah pace. And Herrera to do a Hazard on Coutinho. That should just about stop anything of theres attacking wise. ESPN and MEN saying Martial is starting for what it’s worth lol. Will be tough game no matter what! Would most probably start Lingard over Mata on the right to follow there FB who plays more of a second winger. But also has the pace to get forward and support in attack.

We will test Liverpool more than last season, as we're better equipped to do what we want.

I seem to recall Martial starting this game last season and he done a really good job at covering his fullback. Sadly that's all he pretty much done all game, I'm just hoping Jose isn't employing him for literally just that again this time.

Lets hope so. They deserve respect, but not too much.

^ Conversely, I remember Martial getting doubled/tripled up vs Liverpool with no support from his FB in an attacking sense.

4-2-3-1??

Looks a 3-4-3, Darmian left centre half? MUTV been saying earlier they wouldn't be surprised to see Darmian thrown in to man-mark/watch Salah and his runs.
