The Manchester United Thread

What's the big deal with Jardim? Sure I recall he had that great season where they went pretty far like QF's in CL and almost won Ligue 1? But they had **** of a team at that point with M'Bappe, Fabinho etc etc.

Now I fully appreciate that team was totally dismantled but seemingly things have gone totally off the rails and that's why he has been sacked. I know they don't have that great team anymore but they surely shouldn't be as bad as relegation?

Anyway maybe I'm wrong but just wondering why people think Jardim would be any good for us over the obvious candidates like Zidane.

Edit: Just looked at how many players they've lost, pretty ridiculous really, can't put much blame on him for their downfall. But also they won Ligue 1 in that good season I mentioned at the start, I thought they got pipped to the post and got to Semi's in CL.

"Sure I recall he had that great season where they went pretty far like QF's in CL and almost won Ligue 1?" - Try semi finals of CL, and WON the league title against P$G.

"But they had **** of a team at that point with M'Bappe, Fabinho etc etc." - Putting it like that sorta undersells it. - He coached (being the keyword) most players in that squad to that level. Switched Fabinho into midfield, developed & nurtured the likes Mbappe, Mendy, etc. even rejuvenated Falcao to Atleti levels again, and so on. Just got picked apart & dissembled with each passing transfer window as a result.

"Now I fully appreciate that team was totally dismantled but seemingly things have gone totally off the rails and that's why he has been sacked. I know they don't have that great team anymore but they surely shouldn't be as bad as relegation?" - Agree their start shouldn't have been THIS bad, but there's only so many miracles you can perform for a seller club. Here's a stat for you that puts it into perspective, 24 players of Monaco's "senior" squad were born in 1995 or after that. TWENTY FOUR. He's basically working with babies these days.

Anyway maybe I'm wrong but just wondering why people think Jardim would be any good for us over the obvious candidates like Zidane. - I'd personally prefer someone out of the Poch/Jardim sort of ilk because I think in this moment of time, our current state is beyond a Zidane mould of "suit manager". Can't fault his managerial career to date, but we're not Real Madrid. We don't have arguably the best individual in world football in every position. I think we're beyond a case of "we just need Zidane to come in and add some feel-good factor, we're a ready set weapon" - this isn't the case. We need someone to come in, get their hands dirty and do some serious, serious coaching. The fact that Jardim is a specialist in working with/developing youth is a big factor too, has also worked with Martial.

Let's also note Zidane was never anything special in La Liga either. I think Jose's points total last season in the PL was more than most of Zidane's seasons in La Liga (a league which is widely regarded as less challenging for a giant team).

And maybe Jardim (or someone of his mould; Poch etc.) isn't the man. Heck, maybe Zidane is. But that's just my two cents.

Thanks for the reply mate, good post and I did actually edit my post at the bottom correcting my mistake with their Ligue 1 title and CL Semi's.

But anyway I don't know too much about Monaco or Jardim however after reading your post and doing some of my own research... it's pretty ridiculous the amount of good players they have lost. So I understand your point about how he improved and trained a lot of them to get close to the level they are today.

I personally agree with you regarding needing a hands on manager who is really going to embrace the players and do some serious coaching to build an identity going forward. The other positive which is that you also highlighted how he has worked with young players like Martial and that would be great for him to do similar here.

All in all, I'm not even that keen on Zidane myself, I'd definitely prefer a Pochettino and quite honestly after finding out more Jardim seems to fit the bill well. Think anyone would be a risk at this point so I guess we shall wait and see what happens. Unfortunately given hoe Woodward tends to operate, I can't help but feel he'll go for the obvious star name in Zidane.

Yeah, and there's no doubt Jardim's a bit of a gamble too, but he certainly ticks a lot of boxes on paper. Tactically outwitting Pep a couple of years back with inferior tools sorta playing bias with me too :P

That's the thing with us, as Tyton said, biggest name available + war chest seems to be our answer to everything.

Tbh there doesn’t seem many clear candidates. Jardim seems a good coach but if reports are true players stopped listening to him are true. That doesn’t bode well. Yes his team has been picked apart, but that surely can’t explain what’s happened!

Subasic
Benaglio
Jemerson
Glik
Raggi
Sidibe
Henrichs
Traore
Gaspar
Tielmans
Golovin
Chadli
Guebells
Lopes
Jovitic
Falcao
Pellegrini. That’s still a very good squad even though it’s new as a team and fairly young. And a few of them have been part there successfull period. Paulo Fenseca is the man ;)

Fantastic read and has all the things we are looking for!

Come on!

Great goal by Katie Zelem. Nice one touch passing. Zelem receives the ball edge of the box and rifles it top left corner with her weaker left foot. 16 mins gone. 2-0 Sigsworth with a rebound from her own header that hit the bar.

Via colleague @bbcsport_david, Luke Shaw very close to agreeing new long-term contract with Man Utd. Precise details still to be finalised. Lots of those to be done over next few months.

Ah would you stop?
You can't say **** like that down a camera lens and expect to get away with it.
Can you enlighten me on what the lip-readers have said that he said?
here in NZ we don't always get the full story.

The FA had to get a Portuguese interpreter in because they had no clue lol what he said. Was anyone really affended! You can hardly even tell what he’s saying.

There is a large Portuguese community in this country and the game was broadcast in several Portuguese speaking countries so to be fair it is probably the right thing for the FA to do. It is no different to an English speaker swearing and making gestures to the camera. The fact they had to get an interpreter in is irrelevant the comments made by Jose have no place in any level of football let alone at a live game in front of a worldwide audience. Oh and the word is OFFENDED not affended. ;)

Nothing will surprise me anymore after people got offended when fans were signing about Lukaku's *****.
