The Manchester United Thread

So why are people disappointed with Fellaini? I understand the whole £22 million instead of £27 million, but he's still a great player who is still to hit his prime. So why are people saying he isn't Man Utd quality?

Well, he's a good player, but I assume it's:

1, untested in CL
2, he was available for 4m less earlier in the window
3, UTD were 4m short for their "first choice" in herrera.
4, is seen as thuggish
5, Moyes was his former manager for 4 yrs and it took till 5mins to deadline to sign him. People are concerned as this should have been a dead cert and tidy.

agree with 5 perfectly.

this window was way messy for us

Its pretty bizzare when the guy who was most obvious target since day one, takes 2 months to sign and barely makes the deadline day.

And paying way over the release clause Moyes himself put up in his contract...seriously that is just embarrasing.

He's a good player but the way deal was done was really amateurish.

This is the issue.

Long story short : Felllaini is an excellent signing but the way the deal was struck was unusual, to say the least, at least one month of delay I'd say.... Seems as if they were pushing for another target right until the end.

Unusual? you are being incredibly generous mate.

Farcical is more accurate.

Disappointing to see United failed to cough up £4M to get Herrera, if I was a United fan I would be fuming.

I think in that sort of situation as a manager you've really got to say to the board 'we need this player cough up!'. Unlucky to not get Coentrao but again that was rumoured all summer and they left it till the last hour lol, ridiculous.

As much as you have screwed up in this transfer window please spare a thought for Newcastle :( Kinnear brought in as dof 'to help bring players to the club' and spent the summer bragging that he had great contacts and would bring in amazing players. Newcastle have signed Remy on loan and that's it. Now that is a shambles!

1. On Coentrao its not dead apparently. We are waiting on confirmation they are saying which hopefully its true. All summer Ive been saying I prefer him to Baines (who I like a lot but thought was very overpriced) so Id be quite happy with him in.
2. Fellaini we ended up paying 4m more than his expired 23.5m release clause. I also rate him and people on this forum know how frustrated I was for not going for him much earlier as he obviously represented our most realistic target and instead wasted a lot of time chasing players who would never realistically join us - thereby leaving him late and having to pay 4m more AS WELL AS MISSING OUT ON OTHERS apparently.
3. Herrera I was not entirely convinced about due to him only really having one great season but push came to shove and we needed a player of his type and, due to our cack handed transfer "planning" / negotiating "skills" we ended up needing to take a risk on him. But we failed to pay 4m more on him (the 4m extra we "wasted" on FELLAINI). IMHO WILLIAN and ERIKSEN were much better options than HERRERA.
4. So we have strengthened but we are still short at least a player (and more if COENTRAO doesnt join).
5. Btw the older amongst us (such as myself) will know that our inability to properly negotiate transfers / go for people on time is not a new thing (there are a lot of examples on this such as our missing out on RONALDINHO due to Kenyon trying to act clever and suddenly offer less etc).

Also, wtf was happening with HERRERA? Spanish reports are saying that a group of people went to Spanish FA headquarters purportedly to finalise his signing but they were imposters!!!

If the paperwork wasn't sent on time I highly doubt it will go through, although the FA have been lenient in previous times.

Fellaini was a good signing like I was debating earlier in this thread, after one of your fans labelled him as an 'average player', which was ridiculous. Good signing and adds what you needed to the midfield.

Herrera would have been a good signing he's still got improving to do aswell. I think United have missed out on a gem of a player to be honest but we'll see. Willian and Eriksen would have been very good signings but once again United were far too slow and just didn't even express an interest which was silly really because now they've gone to United's rivals and strengthened them which is just going backwards for you lot.

Yeah you have strengthened but I don't think you have matched the expectations fans like yourself and others may have expected at the start of the window. When talk of players like Thiago, Fabregas and many more were being mentioned, to only pick up Fellaini, and may I add just about pick him up, is a little disappointing I think but Fellaini is a good buy.

To your last part about the inability in the market - which in link to my last part of my post about expectations may have lowered a majority of the older fans - however I still think there were a lot of fans hoping for much more, I agree that United have missed out on some really good players this year, and in the past, and that needs to change. However there is no denying that the success that United has had in the past shows they are certainly doing something right.

So, Carrick - Fellaini will be hard to get past imo.
Then we have Kagawa and Rooney making the plays up the field for RVP to latch onto and score goals. Is anyone else quietly confident?

Not really, Rooney is someone who doesn't really want to be at the club, which is the hardest thing to take because so many other players would. Ander Herrera for example. :(

On Coentrao..... Madrid are *****.... how can it be confirmed by the league and then suddenly retracted??

Why haven't United released any statements about these supposed imposters? Or explaining why they waited so long to get Fellaini and why he only requested a transfer on the final day? I tell you if we had any other manager (and by this I mean not Moyes) and we went for Fellaini like we did in this window we wouldn't have got him. I think the only reason we managed to get him was because of his previous relationship with Moyes and if any other manager tried to sign him the way we did he would have laughed in their faces. We were **** lucky to get Fellaini.

He's professional and he looked better in his 2 games this year than he has for a long, long time. The fans and Moyes seem to have convinced him it's a fresh start.

True, haven't seen Mike for a while, is he under his bed sheets sulking? (With a Herrera poster).
