The Manchester United Thread

Lewandowski just isn't a very intelligent buy, though. He's had a great season, he's on a longish contract, so he'll cost you shitloads. With Welbeck and Rooney set to be the striking partnership, I reckon it'd probably make more sense to have Hernandez, promote someone like Keane or Petrucci, and then buy someone who's good quality but nothing particularly expensive. There's value in the market, it just needs to be looked for.

I see your point but the good thing about someone like Lewandowski is that he would offer something different that the other strikers do not, apart from maybe Rooney who can be physical and can be an aerial prescence.

Having said that would Kagawa fit out natural 4-4-2 type formation? I honestly can't see how he would unless we are going to use more of a 4-2-3-1 next season then maybe but where would Rooney play because I think playing up front on his own is not his best position?

Like? Welbeck offers intelligent movement and good channel running, Hernandez offers raw pace and finishing ability, Rooney combines both with excellent creative vision. Lewandowski doesn't offer anything those trio don't.

You've been playing a 4-2-3-1 this season for all intents and purposes, it's just been 'smudged' slightly by Welbeck's propensity to come deep and link play. Kagawa can play anywhere in the supporting band of three.

With Kagawa, it then wouldnt be too different to the shape 2006-2009. Which makes me think its about Europe as opposed to the PL. Not understanding the Lewandowski link myself, but SAF has always liked 4 strikers.

SAF also knows when to promote youth, and I'd imagine it'll be a breakthrough year for the likes of Petrucci. With Kagawa you'd have an interesting spin on the fluid 06-09 shape, a 4-2-3-1 version rather than a 4-3-3. Allows for more interchange and potentially more lethality in attack but you would need a mobile destroyer to protect from deep.

Most definitely, I would argue, give the manner of the games we lost this season, we need one anyway, certainly in Europe.

If we buy Kagawa then Lewandowski's deal makes no sense and that too when he have bigger problems else where.

If we sign Kagawa then he plays behind the lone striker (Rooney) and when Welbeck/Hernandez plays Rooney plays in the hole. So we dont need that 4th striker. For cup games we can use Keane, Fergie has said he will be involved next season.

Re your last line, couldn't agree more. There is value and we need to do bit of scouting.

I will be really worried if we try to play Kagawa on wings. He is very very good behind striker. But overall I agree with what you meant. He can swap with Nani/Young during the game which was how we played in 2006-08.

Before all this attacking lark how about getting that holding midfielder (Fergie does not call it that) first though :P

Lewandowski is quite versatile, he can just as well play as lone striker, play as deep lying forward, sort of in a Rooney role i guess, and would propably even manage as creative midifielder if the need arised.

He doesnt offer anything that isn't at United already in one shape or another, and certainly wouldnt manage as a creative midfielder.

Much rather have Kagawa, a versatile destroyer and some youth promotion instead.

Just wondering who you would think for a versatile destroyer? Do you think it is likely Fergie will even sign someone like that anyway? I did read on the official Manchester United site that he does not plan on signing a holding midfielder (I know different type of player).

We have always had someone who has had that ability to harry and break up play, even though they could do more. I think he will have to regardless of what he said, barring a complete recovery from Fletcher to his best, which seems highly unlikely. The fact that he was using Park in centre of the midfield, is blatant give-away to that fact.

My thoughts? The Bender brothers, Udinese's Isla (courtesy of Godcubed), then of course the likes of M'vila, Martinez.

Could SAF not have gone to the DFB-Pokal final to watch Hummels? I think he could do well as a DLP.

There are plenty of players at Dortmund we could do with. Kagawa, Hummels, Bender, Pizcsek (sp).

He would. He plays quite inteligently, sees a lot and has plenty of assist in addition to goals. Its not uncommon thing for him to go far back and help pass the ball around. There just wasnt much of a need for that sort of thing this season with Dortumnd trashing the league beating all-time point record. Still, i agree, for the amount money it would take to buy him , there are more pressing needs right now.

DLP? He's a centre-back.. TBF, he'd be a great signing for United.

Yeah, he is but he plays as a BPD and steps into the midfield often, playing some wonderful through-balls and is very adept at retaining possession.

Just a thought :)
