Right, and players coming out and whining publicly about how unhappy they are, how they're so tortured and down from living on 80k per week does absolute ******* wonders for the chances of their club receiving a good offer for them. See, I don't care if the player whines publicly and the club gets a good deal. That's fine, whatever. But that happens so rarely.
'Why wouldn't I let you go' is a simple one. Because the player in question is an asset to the club, who signed himself onto a contract. The club plans around him being there. Him getting out of that contract creates big current and long-term issues.
Did it really effect them badly? They kept hold of him until it washed over, and then he returned to play a big part of City's snatching of the title from United. A little later, they sell him on for good money, in a transfer window where there's plenty of time for them to get a replacement, no pressure to sell, and no reduction in the value of the player they're trying to sell due to him ******** about everything. I'd say that's a pretty ****** good decision.
