The Manchester United Thread

Is anyone excited for QPR match? It'll be nice to see many of our first teamers returning to action (Rafael, Shaw, Rojo, Blind, Falcao). I dunno if all of em will play or not, but I'm most excited about Blind, to see what he can do in the middle of the park.

Oh, and it'll be nice to see what our formation plays like with actual wingbacks.

I'm not a betting man. But sometimes you have to bet. I would gladly put my house on the line on this 'will Mata leave' and I would put it on ******* no.

'Should Leave?' would be a definite no. 'Will leave?' is still a bit ambiguous, to an extent. If RvP was injured, it'd be more definite, since Rooney and Falcao upfront, with Mata behind them. However, now it all depends on who LvG decides to give the first team spot to. I'm hoping it'll be Mata.

I wouldn't be so confident, if LVG goes to 4-3-3 he's automatically under threat.

He's probably under threat now as well because we have such a plethora of attacking options in the no.10 positions with 3-5-2.

He's not under threat. In 4-3-3 he is still one of the best wide players in the side. In a 3-5-2 he is still one of the best 10s in the side. Rooney RVP and Falcao are fighting it out for the 1/2 open striker spots. This is being over egged.

Why does people rate him out-wide >.<

Maybe he's been good before in spells for Chelsea but now I don't see what he offers there... rather than having a Di Maria or Januzaj.

As a no.10 he's obviously meant to be the best we've got, but atm he's not performing, whatever the reason, he seems quite lethargic and slow on the ball, right now I think we need someone with a bit more urgency/dynamism in that position, like Januzaj. Especially when you consider our front-line is quite similar and slow.

Because he's played wide for Valencia and Chelsea and always performed. It's not like he's going to rigidly stick to the left and be told to get to the byline and cross, he'll be given license to roam all across as he was at Chelsea and Valencia, and then another winger gives the width and pace.

But I seriously doubt we signed Falcao to go 4-3-3 anyway.

Would that work with a 3-5-2 where the centre of the pitch is already rather congested? It's alright him being "allowed" to roam, but where is he going to go?

This is what annoys me of Rooney sometimes, when he's not involved in the game he starts to wander further back towards the ball, pulling himself out of position and therefore effecting the whole team IMO.

Probably not no and from what I've seen from Falcao (pre-injury admittedly), he's actually deceptively quicker than most think.

In spells?

His entire CAREER has been built on playing out wide, with the freedom to pop up anywhere he likes. He has never been super quick, but he is incredibly intelligent with a knack for finding space and moving the ball very quickly, and picking up extremely dangerous offensive position to score create.

We were talking about 4-3-3, no? He's obviously a 10 in 3-5-2.

Personally think we should go for a diamond anyway.

He made his name playing 'wide'. He played for Valencia there and in all Spain youth categories. You can even check FM to confirm that. He's been a 'winger' in almost every FM before he joined Chelsea.

Rooney is seriously puzzling though, I can't wait to see what LVG has planned.

Falcao and RVP are (on paper) our best strikers, Mata is our best CAM with Januzaj as backup. Assuming a diamond, Herrera, Di Maria, Strootman and Rooney are our options in CM. Blind and Carrick for CDM, although I can see Carrick leaving after this season. The only roles I can see for him are offering a rotation option for ST, CAM and CM. But he's our captain and highest earner, so is LVG worried about RVP? Doesn't fancy Mata as CAM?

Or simply sell Rooney. Would solve a lot of problems.

Should have been sold a while ago, can't see it now with the captaincy and new contract.

Would be bittersweet if he did go. In the pomp of his Untied career he was always one of my favourite players, but he's lost the pace, power and passion that made fans love him. I'd love him to get it back, but doubt it. He should have gone down as an all time United great in fans' eyes, but he sold the loyalty of the fans for a better contract.

This pretty much sums up my feelings on him:

Wayne Rooney has a new Manchester United deal but fans will never love him | Nooruddean Choudry | Football | theguardian.com

"The level of fan resentment is born of what could and should have been. The worst crime Rooney ever committed against any Manchester United supporter was robbing them of a hero. There is so much of the player that lends himself to adulation. What makes him so disliked by large pockets of Salford and Manchester is that he was the Liverpudlian they were willing to adopt."

I have no feelings towards Rooney. Just like RVP, I wont feel bad if he gets sold. Rooney in last 5 years has done everything he could to make United fan angry. If I could choose to sell him tomorrow, I would without thinking.

I was relating to 3-5-2 but in 4-3-3 I don't think he's a LVG type player to put out wide, maybe I'm wrong. We shall see.

Bit easy to say "he should of been sold a while ago"... fact remains he has been one of our better players, not that it says much for the others, like Vanjagl points out, Rooney often has bad games but still picks up an assist or goal.

I do think he compromises our team sometimes with his positioning and not really sure he's our best anything anymore, but to say we should of sold him a while ago is a bit unfair I think.

I say we should have sold him because Fergie obviously was setting up to do so, not because he's a bad player. The failure to do so is the reason for our squad imbalances now.

Tbf Fergie's intentions in latter seasons were unclear, to me anyway, selling Rooney and while the likes of Chicharito, Cleverley, Anderson etc. remain seems rather bonkers to me.

Fergie did break his philosophy as well to sign RVP in final season, for glory, pretty much.
