The Manchester United Thread

I don't get why people fail to understand there are many reasons we are not playing well. Call them excuses if you like. But this season was always going to be a transitional season after last, and despite how ever much we spent I always expected it to be a tough season.

The poor football should not play into this unless that is how LVG wants us to play, you can still play decent stuff while under transition.

We have just not consistently. its been like 1 game here 60 mins there 45 mins and so on.

Last time i remember us playing decent football was newcastle, i can't remember a 45mins since unless 60%+ possesion and sideways passing is decent to you?

The southampton transition under potch and koeman happened fairly quickly tbf, brendan had liverpool playing better stuff quite sharpish.

Ive seen lot of people Souness,Neville,Carragher,LVG journos say we played decent in matches just not for 90mins or game after game.

Please point me to these games? three defenders with that opinion they probably aren't fussed with sideways passing and zero tempo if the defence isn't leaky.

My biggest gripe is not results, it's his mentality and how he gets away with it because he packs it up in the word philosophy to come across better than if he were like Moyes who was too honest for his own good and admit things are in a bad state.

The football is so defensive. Moyes was clueless in trying to execute attacking football. He wanted to preserve the United tradition of wing play but his own style was based on being compact and tenacious through the middle. The mix of the two was horribly disjointed.

Van Gaal has openly criticised the balance yet his signings made it more top heavy. The keeper has saved us many points this season but he is only human. Eventually our luck went. His idea to rectify the defence was to stick another player at the back, which nullified our attacking threat because we've turned into a risk-averse, safety first side. And he is so stubborn in game to change. I think he has been caught out on how up and down the English game is. It's not like in the continent when both teams may be following a game plan, and it becomes a patient, tactical game. He spoke about 4-4-2 diamond making his "*** twitch!!". You can change systems in game. You can get a message across to individuals but he lets it happen in front of him.

3? Souness was a midfielder. But hey if that's what you think that's your opinion mate.

Glad someone else has brought up his balance quote and the fact our signings didn't improve this. Also pretty much agree with the rest.

Fair post that mate.

Aye, thought he was quite defensive tbf. Still doesn't change my point and opinion that these so called games i can't recall because we probably never played any good stuff for even 10minute periods apart from the 3 i've named (hull, newcastle and qpr) But please again point me to these games when we looked good?

Van Gaal seems scared to play an attacking style, either he doesn't want to get it completely wrong and is playing it safe or he doesn't trust any of the players including his signings if they all were his.

First half against Leicester. Played some good stuff against win over pool. 1st 30 mins vs Everton.

I sort of agree that he is a bit safe as just wants to get top 4 minimum and don't want to be attacking. And im sure he don't trust as many players as he kept. Many flattered in pre season.

Leicester yeah give you that one, meh against liverpool imo just incredibly lucky and clinical but i can see why people would rate that performace and the everton is one i can't recall apart from the saves but i'll take your word on that one but then again in hindsight we got away with it a little against them (de gea saves and pena miss) who have been shocking this season.

Probably just me and even if he says otherwise but i think rojo and blind are his only real signings in terms of what he wanted. Next summers signings will probably be mostly his a swe prepare for the europa league.

Playing safe has cost us points and allowed other teams back into the mix for top 4. It's allowed Southampton to get to 3rd. If you don't trust your defence, utilise your attack. Our attack is full of quality players yet we're sacrificing to put an extra man at the back. Goals win games, defences win titles. But we're not going for the title. Van Gaal in his stubborn ways have nullified our attacking threat, and that has spread a lack of confidence. Falcao, Wilson, Di Maria all looked confused and frankly clueless. For a lot of them it's been a recurring theme.
