The Manchester United Thread

Rebuilding United is more appealing to a foreign manager than Tottenham. Unless he is seriously devoted to his job (which would be commendable) I just couldn't see him sticking at Tottenham if United came calling.

Depends on the Manager and his age, Pocettino could have easily grown up watching Ozzie and Villa at Spurs when he was dreaming of making it in the game?

Times change, new giants can rise. Maybe he is trying to do this. Spurs is having new stadium built also? The thing is, in United he needs to start rebuilding, but in Spurs he has done that. Now Spurs is starting to show more what they are. The team is young and they only can go higher.

I remember when he just started, there where lot of problems, that Pocchetino trains very hard and players are not used to it. But after that period the players have used to this. It might be hard to bring it over to United.

But true. He would be the best fit for United. No argument there.

It's not really a 'rebuild' job at United to be honest like it was after Fergie and Moyes I'd argue. It would be more like a revitalise job as the core is there to do well and we only need a few top players to compete on all fronts again in my opinion. If Pochettino manages to get the best out of the players like he has at Spurs he already has a better squad in my opinion here without even considering the resources at his disposal he would have more of as well.

I'd say now would be a very good time to take over United, you've seen the young talent that can become great doing it in the first team and at the same time you have players who are not performing at their top level as expected for most this season. People would have low expectations (relative to a club this size) as well because United haven't had any success so there is no better time than to take over us now.

It would be a hard job but at a good time to take over, much better time than from Moyes or Fergie where it was a total rebuild.

Aside from what he's building at Tottenham, I think you're really underselling both London and just how far your status has fallen.

Let's say things finish as we stand and you miss the Champions League for a second season out of 3. (With the third season being as good as a miss being as you crashed out of a group you never should of.). And dip out the Cup so it's three straight years without a trophy. Whilst all the while Tottenham are in there. Maybe as Champions. Giving him more scope to build on what he's already building at Tottenham. I'd disagree and say I'd be very surprised if he walked away from Tottenham.

The name of Utd and an open cheque book (which lessons with no Champions League football again) only goes so far. The longer you miss out on Europes elite, and stay away from silverware, the less attractive you become all ways round. Trust me.

Whilst your busy dismissing Pellegrini above (and I doubt for one minute he's even been considered at Utd); he's one of your best options left after Mourinho (who I agree is completely wrong for Utd) in terms of any sort of name who's got the track record.

He is building a good team and they are no doubt improving but I still think United squad is stronger pretty much in every area, difference being a manager has got the best out of his over a season and the other hasn't. But this stadium coming will put a halt on progress, just like it did for Arsenal, so he'll have to work with more of a limitation for a period of time, the achievement of this season will be looked as a failure next season if he doesn't match it.

Tottenham have only out performed United worth noting this season and they will get in CL (ok Moyes season as well they came higher in the league but didn't get CL so nothing special), maybe they end up being champions in a freak season. But say if he does make them champions this season and with the limitation that a new stadium is going to impose on the way he can build this team, where else does he go with this club to make bigger achievements? The only thing that is going to happen next season for Tottenham is a fall from grace because everything I've mentioned and the fact that all the big teams will come back stronger.

If we miss out on CL this season it's a valid point it will be harder to bring players in. But at the end of the day we signed two world-class players when we last were out of the CL in Di Maria and Falcao (yes they were flops we know).

Of course I'm dismissing Pellegrini, it is absurd to think that a manager coming from a direct rival is a good move and his job at City with that squad has been nothing special. Also he's old and there is no longevity whatsoever, he looks like a retired pensioner.

It's like me saying that when you had that dreadful season under Hodgson would you of wanted Moyes from Everton? Because he would of been one of your better options at that point.

Why would he leave what he's building at Tottenham to start over at Utd?

If Spurs win the league and United finish 5th then yeah, why on earth would he leave. However, if Spurs finish 3rd and United 4th, he'd be crazy not to at least think about it.

He's working on very tight budgets at Spurs compared with United, for anyone to suggest Spurs are a better project is very silly.

I ******* hope he doesn't go to United, though! 1 more year of van Gaal, please. (A)

At the end of the day it's trying to compare a Ferrari or a Fiesta. Even if the Ferrari is damaged you know it has the potential to be repaired and overtake the Fiesta.

That was a weird analogy I know but you get the point.

I drive a Ford Fiesta and I'm offended by this post.

I think LVG will blag his way into another season, you just know our board are incompetent and dumb enough to fall into the injury plague so he 'can't rotate this season'. Even though he himself wanted a small squad and is then shocked when he has to use youth even though he reckons that is why he has a small squad in the first place. So he shouldn't complain if he has to rotate youth into the team if that was part of his plan.

Why? You lost every game pretty hard since United is with VG.

Lloris is as good as De Gea, Eriksen is as good as Mata, Kane is better than Rooney/Rashford/whoever else plays up to, Lallana is miles better than Lingard....so yeah.

Um???

Lol. Lamela presumably?

Have to disagree on Lloris. There's only Neuer I'd put up there with De Gea and I have a hard time separating the two. He's the best 'keeper in England for me.

So what would your two combined XI for Spurs/United & Pool/United be?

The really obvious answer is that United both have funds and status Spurs can only dream of. And a stadium Spurs are only just about getting hold of. Spurs have a clear and obvious glass ceiling. Whether they can break through remains to be seen.

Poch is no fool, he'll see where Spurs end up, and what he has to work with next season. Levy is going to have to get his wallet out for Spurs to take it to the next level. Something he's not great at.

If we're considering the Rooney for majority of this season Kane is better, but if we're considering the Rooney that turned up in January which is more like the real Rooney we expect then he is better than Kane.

Still the point stands, United team is better. If you had a gun to your head and wanted one of De Gea or Lloris you'd have the former. Same goes with Mata or Eriksen, the former is more proven in the league and when he has a player with the movement to bring him in the game (hello Rashford) we actually see the real Mata. Problem for Mata is so often a striker like Rooney negates him.

If we compare Lamela we have to use our best wide player which is Young or the Depay of last few games which we expected him to be, not Lingard.

Any particular formation?

Intersting conversation with some of your lads Sunday where they were saying (on similar lines to this), player for player you'd probably take more of City's in a combined XI but Klopp has L'pool more organised and fighting more as a team already than City's collection of individuals most weeks.

I'd still take Lamela.
