Also says we will pay 40m upfront with 20 in bonuses. They also say the deal will be done by tomorrow when the Benfica president flies home tomorrow.

Is this going to a time where teenagers are worth more than lets say players at the age of 24-25? Just because they might have the potential to be a superstar.
Everyone is very critical when you want to buy a player for 40m (and 20m bonus) except when they are young and don't know yet how good they will be...
Yeah it is a lot. Market is bonkers!!! Remember fans losing there **** about how much we paid for Martial now the same fans not on this Forum yet but others saying the complete opposite now. Dread to think where we would be without him this season!! At the end of the day if our scouts have watched every game of his this season and deem the fee right that's fine by me. We can't afford to let top young talent go to our rivals anymore like in the past over fees/ agents fees. I have watched him a fair bit this season and the lad could be something special if he carries on. Been key for Benfica this season, and that's impressive for a lad who just turned 18 and been dominating games and grown men.
Buying very young players for 60+ million is idiotic, regardless of whether Martial actually turned out ok. You've spend shitload on certain Memphis in the same ******* window to have an example of just how badly it can go. The thing with Martial is that he turned out to be amazingly professional and mature for his age. **** knows if it will be the same with Renato, or will it all go to his head and ends in gigantic flop.
So I'll restrain from internet flexing until he is actually success if I were you.
Exactly. Even on this forum few said he didn't pay lot of games at top level and it was a panic signing when it wasn't. As usual everything ManUtd did was painted with negative brush and nothing more. There were many stories about Martial and how Monaco wouldn't sell him until the CL playoffs.
I haven't watched Renato Sanches much except in CL games, looks like a tank and full of energy. I know a Porto fan (on other forum) who said it was an insane deal. I asked him about how good he is and posted the win % stats with and without Sanches, this is what he said.
Paraphrasing what he said - Benfica lost super cup to Sporting, lost first league game, then to Porto, lost to Sporting again at Home 3-0. Couple of weeks later they played against sporting again in the cup and they lost that game too. Big team losing 4 times vs other big teams is simply unheard of in the league.
Sanches was introduced and he was dynamic. Coincidence or not. He improved them defensively because of his high pressing off the ball and improved their attacking with his ability to dribble.
On the player, he is very strong and can play with high energy for 90 mins.
Also, he was unknown half the season before and he is in rich vein of form, so you can't judge a player so quickly. It might be just purple patch. Then examples of Maniche and Anderson. Also Portuguese league is not strong physically, so it's easy for him to bully the players. Not sure he can do the same in PL.
So they rate him highly but think the move is lot quicker and might have an impact on his development.
Carvalho was yes and with good reason, but serious and long term injuries have hampered him last 2 seasons. Most probably why know one has decided to go for him despite interest from many clubs.Didnt they just have all the exact same hype over Carvalho as well, 3 years ago.
That's for scouts and people at higher level to make decision.
Yes, exactly as with every transfer. What's your point exactly?
Mike tries to justify every signing (got to admire it) but signing James would be ridiculous and there is no justification as to what he would even bring to this side that we don't currently have.
There should be far bigger priorities than him but like I say, it honestly wouldn't surprise me if we signed him. Just like Stones, sadly.
It wasn't a justification FFS. He asked where he would fit.
And he's a fair bit quicker than Mata.
Also Stone is a ball playing CB. How does he not fit if you move Blind to replace Carrick?
You've been moaning all year for a CB. If we buy a CB, it needs to be ball playing one. Our best option Laporte, is injured.
From what i've seen of Stones coming forward with the ball, and getting caught out at the back. A quick positional change to a Carrick type DMC might be in his future long term. Wouldnt surprise me if someone tried it, **** they tried it with David Luis at one point.

David Luiz is a fantastic footballer and a average CB. Luiz actually played really well as DM.
Playing passes and showing composure as a CB and as a CM is completely different. For a start, they won't have time on the ball to pick the passes and they should be on the move constantly.
Stones might go on to become very good CB but from what I have seen he makes decision very slowly and most of his ball playing skills put Everton in danger defensively by playing passes that was not needed.
