The Manchester United Thread

Problem is, when you have a 35 year old, if he doesn't deliver straight away the signing is kind of under scrutiny because he has like one more season max to turn it around. I'm sure he'll start bagging goals again but to my mind those chances that have already gone begging in previous games have already proved costly in us dropping vital points that may mean we miss out on top 4 let alone challenge for title this season. Early days but 5 off 4th and 9 off top is a lot to turn around, even at this stage. Given how this league is it is possible because anyone can take points off anyone but I can't see us not dropping more points, that's the problem. We need to go on a real run to have a chance.

I sort of agree what your saying. Bit like I said the problem is everyone is missing guilt edge chances. In years gone by the 1 of the STR might of had a dry spell, but the others and the wingers were still scoring. Atm no one is Zlatan record for goals this season is decent atm. But he and others have missed some right sitters. More than confident we will get top 4.

You situation is similar to ours when Mou came back. Good team, fairly attractive play style, no strikers. As soon as you get your Costa, it's game on.

God how much more? £250K a week on Ibrahimovic. The same Rooney. What could amount to £58 million on Martial. A terrific young prospect in Rashford who's become a regular starter. Even Depay can adequately play up there and he was another £25 million.

How much more do you suggest they need to spend before they find their man?

Who do you think will miss out then? It's a six way battle for top 4, and all of the other five teams have a lead over you, and more importantly, have been playing better. Not saying there isn't plenty of time for that to change, but curious as to who you see missing out

Arsenal and Spurs imo.

It's not a question of how much, but rather who do you spend it on.

Zlatan: slowly but surely fading. He's been immense for his entire career, but this is his swan song.
Rooney: he hasn't been doing anything but check in that cash for the last 2 years or more.
Martial: he's 20. A very expensive 20 years old, but still 20. He's there for the future, no matter how talented he is.
Rashford: same as Martial, too young and inconsistent to put your hopes on him when you aim for a top 4 in a league as the EPL.

The problem with the strikers from my point of view, is that there is no apparent balance. Some are too old and jaded, some are too young and inexperienced.

It's a question of 'how much?' when you're repeatedly spending good money after bad.

Three terrific young talents there in Martial, Rashford and Depay. Coach and improve them if you believe you're the best Coach on the planet that plays youth as he repeatedly says rather than going out and spending a **** load more on wages and fees! (As he invariably does.).

*I know you're a Chelsea fan mate. Not narking at you. Just Mourinho the archetypal cheque-book manager.

When you're "the best manager" (not saying he's not), you will always be under pressure. He probably signed up for a top 4 finish, so he has no time to nurture the kids. If that is so, than it's his fault for assuming it. And to be realistic, he should be achieving it, with the squad he has at hand.

I think top 4 is set and it will be like this until the end. But what kind of order is another question. Maybe Spurs can push it more that Kane is now back.
Afraid that Chelsea might run away if they continue like this.

They might do but Chelsea weren't that impressive yesterday against a pretty poor Boro side.

For those who were in a split verdict of whether or not it was a penalty, input given by 2010 World Cup final referee Howard Webb;

"I saw it in slow-motion and the contact was less significant than I first thought. But do I think Monreal in his attempt to get the ball impeded him? Yes I do. I think it's a penalty and I'm surprised Andre didn't give it.

"I don't think there would have been much reaction if he had and I'm sure Wenger would have been screaming for it down the other end."

And Webb was being very kind in describing Monreal's impediment as an "attempt to get the ball".

Regardless of anyones views, putting up Howard Webb in defence of Utd isn't really the best person to use mate for any credence.

I quite like that idea. With L'pool having Sunderland and Bournemouth their next two, Chelsea beat 'Spurs a 7 point gap opens up for Tottenham. They beat City a 4 point gap opens. (Maybe more with City having a tough fixture away at Burnley first on a flat Sat'day dinner off the back of Germany.).

That would see a 2 (maybe 3 depending on Arsenal) horse race starting to take shape.

Good thinking that man!

Ibrahimovic is short term and martial is a left winner.

I think who we need is our matic...that is, the matic from 2014.

The DM position is the most underrated position in world football. Every top team has that stalwart DM in the ranks. We lack a pure defensive mid atm. Get a pure DM and the rest will solve itself.

Martial is being used as an LW/ inside forward currently. But there's a standout centre forward right there on your books going forward.

How many more DM's do you want? How about utilising what you have and paid a hefty sum for already?

If Mou doesn't see Blind as the replacement for Carrick then we defo need a top Replacement for him if we continue with a 3 with Herrera and Pogba. Not sure need a pure DM but someone who can control and dictate a game. Scholes, Pirlo, Verratti, Weigl, Alonso type player.

Were you guys in for Kante this summer? I haven't followed the transfer talk at all this year. Can't Schneiderlin cover that post?

Janet said Jose spoke with him, but he already agreed to join Chelsea. Mou for some reason doesn't seem to rate Schniederlin for some reason, neither did LVG in the end getting less game time each season.

But we currently lack a pure DM. Blind will get rolled over in midfield by any top 6 team.

Schneiderlin is more of a b2b player. His positioning isn't good enough to play at defensive mid. Same exact case with herrera. Idk why TFM hasn't been tested in that role yet. Carrick is 35 and hasn't got his legs anymore to play every week. So we do need personnel in that area of the pitch. I'd suggest weigl or maybe naiggolan.
