Patrick, I agree. This just ties in to my general frustrations about football as whole. It's not about not criticising his match, which was frankly appalling, it's how people fall back to the tired clichés on marketing and other bollocks rather than assessing what's on the pitch, and it's not just him either.

Speaking of him, he's always had an edge, and I definitely don't want to see it dimmed. Rather he keeps it and gets a few cards on the way. Like the players he's adored,jes better when he plays on the edge
 
The Griezmann deal, if it somehow came off, would be incredible. It would also be so frustrating. He's been amazing since societies where he could have been picked up for a quarter of the price. Not Jose's fault, but scouts could have done a better job because back then we were crying out for a left winger

Yeah was saying the same to a mate at work today. Could of had him between 25-30m. Not sure what our scouts were up to? Maybe the reason why we've higherd 50+ new scouts this season over the world. Can't help but feel excited about Griezmann already lol! Mourinho really building something special here. And looks like he's here for the long haul. How would you line up with Griezou? :)
 
If, and still a huge if, he signs, he goes to centre forward primarily, you've then got several very dangerous finishes who can play up front and wide. Rooney is probably done at this point.

Makes sense thought it would be Rooneys replacement. Do you think Mourinho will go back to a 4231?
 
The thing about Griezmann is he's ridiculously versatile, he can play as the main man up top, in the #10, out wide either side, and as we seen in the Euro's, he can even drop very deep during games to have an effect on the game if needing to... so if he signs, there's no definitive place for him, nor no definitive end of the road for any of the players currently operating in any of those positions. It would just add a massive injection of class and options. But I agree completely with Mike on him being looking us in the face for years; it's not as if he's burst onto the scene over the past year or two like some may think, he was fantastic at Sociedad too. One thing about Atletico, they're one of if not the best at picking up potential world beaters before there's any notable hype built.

The problem is that your club both encourages that blurring of lines and profits from it. There's a clear reason why United's PR on Pogba and in general is the way it is, and that's for the brand and ultimately for the money that it pulls in. I don't want to write some rambling long piece on it but the club are essentially applying something of a quanitive branding model onto one of the few areas where there is an almost inescapable qualitive level too. You can hype the **** out of someone in another industry, get them into all the right places and seen with the right people and then you're sorted, so long as they don't go out of their way to **** it up. With footballers though, what they do on the pitch is at least as important as what they display off it in terms of their branding. This is a somewhat unique circumstance, and IMO United have not really adapted to it especially well but have instead applied the same sort of branding you would use for an IG personality. His own branding is equally inflated, but it's sort of expected to be. Look at the contrast in tone that you'll see when a new act signs for a big label, between artist and company. Artist will put out **** about how they made it and are set and are the GOAT, whilst the label plays it cool and carefully manages hype unless the act is ready to be the next big thing, here and now.

You guys had a pretty good chance to put out humble branding and basically say "the prodigal son is ready to take the final step on his journey, training under the master". ****, you even had Jose ready to tie that particular idea together but instead you went with POGBACK and a campaign that looks like it was made by JJ Abrams.

Yeah, one might see the whole "Pogback" and "ZlatanTime" campaigns as over the top, another person might see it as shrewd business from Manchester United. I think we can all agree that United have nothing to learn when it comes to bringing in ridiculous sums of money from the whole merchandise side of the game. I for one have very little interest in it, but it's a big factor in what allows us to go out and sign players for a world record fee, and if we play a similar sum for Griezmann, then don't be fooled in thinking the whole Pogback & ZlatanTime marketing campaigns didn't play a big part in say decreasing the 2016 expenditures and generating more money to go out and spend again.

It's 21st century football, Manchester United are a mega franchise as much as they are one of the greatest football clubs. And as said on this thread, sometimes it's tricky to distinguish the money side of it with the actual football.

The prestige of the no. 7 has been smeared beyond belief. I'd actually want griezmann to earn it (that is, if he actually signs for united).
