The Manchester United Thread

Be very disappointed if we don't add anything else to the attack in this window, a winger was important this summer.

If any of Martial, Rashford or Mkhitaryan get injured, who are we turning to? Lingard? Pereira? Not great depth for the wings especially.

Juan Mata is incredibly disappointed in you considering he's actually one of our best wide players.

Ahh that old cherry tree, I personally have never liked Mata outwide, I prefer it when he can do his magic in the no.10 position. I just feel he's a bit of a one trick pony on the flanks, cut inside, leaves us a bit one-dimensional from that side. No proper width.

Except he was the most effective wide player last season, and not just cutting inside either

Winger isnt a must for me, especially when playing 4-3-3. More interested in the fullbacks getting up the pitch

Wouldn't argue with you at all on your lack of attacking depth but I can't concur with your views on Mata.

I don't know where this common assertion comes from that he isn't effective wide. He's not rapid. But he's not slow. And he's one of the few you have who can actually, or want to, beat a man instead of looking to give it to someone else.

I think you're doing him a big disservice there personally but then I don't watch Utd half as much as you do. Shrugs.

Matas off the ball movement is great and last 2 seasons he's become a lot better defensively and also his runs in behind happens more often, I really enjoy watching the Mata, Herrera and Valencia triangle!

Well despite what anyones thoughts on Mata are, it's quite clear Mourinho wants that extra attacking player. Especially for the wings as the chase of Perisic has gone on for so long this summer. I'm not sure if we have an alternative but I really hope we do.

The inevitable injuries of last season and we're back to bare bones again/similar problems.

Mata is not bad outwide, but I think we've come to expect wide player to have a bit more spectacle in him. You want wide player to do breathtaking runs and hit wild crosses or cut inside for 30 yard powershot. And here' this unassuming guy, he doesn't dribble, he couldn't outrun your grandma, he does a lot of intricate tippy-tappy passing, **** all comes out of it for 90 minutes, then out of nowhere he's suddenly in the box and scores.

LMAO. He's a guy that scores when you need him to. I kinda prefer him playing through the middle tho. He dictates the play a lot better

He isn't pacy but he's got quick feet. I understand what you're saying. If he beats his man, he does it with skill or technique, not by outpacing someone.

Sorry, but is Premier League International Cup something new? Sounds like a Champions League thingie, but there is already a CL for youth?

It's a PL thing they brought in 2 or 3 years ago when they reformed the youth structure. To give more competitive games and against a different style of footie from the Continent. It's split half PL U-23's, half European U-21/U-23's with all the English clubs playing in England.

*Edit* I actually quite like it FWIW. The standards not that great a rise in level with some of the European sides they invite but it's always competitive and adds a bit of excitement to have 'European' youth games. Can't harm players development to come up against foreign ideas early. I know L'pool coaches always relish it and speak highly of it so it's working for those involved.

He deserves a good crack this season in the first team, he's got a lot of talent and I'm hoping we can utilise it.
