The Manchester United Thread

Martial's position seems to be questionable still, according to Sky Sports asked Mourinho to leave (even though I'm sure that was early in summer). But still.. what has happened... we just said no I assume.

Its questionable in the sense that it's on Martial. The club want him to stay and can extend his contract unilaterally. I think within the week we will know if he truly wants to stay or not.

Be happy with Maguire. But really need to shop a CB or 2 out.

I'd keep Smalling and get rid of Injury/Mistake prone Jones and Rojo. Smalling may not be the best with the ball at his feet but he's been our most consistent defender now for years now, sadly.

But yes, Maguire - Bailly sounds really ******* good in my head!

Yeah Jones at least. Rojo just signed a new contract so he will be staying plus he the only left footed CB at the club. Comes handy in some situations.

On Martial not transfer related. But his play especially touch with his back to goal is terrible. Noticed a lot last season and this tour. When he receives the ball with his back towards goal and has a defender tight, his foot turns into a trampoline!

I think he will stay as I assume utd will want to recoup a majority of the fee they paid for him. Plus no ones going to pay that much for him.

According to Mourinho after last nights game Valencia injury is a recurring one and will happen more often now due to his age. Well that doesn't sound very good considering our fullback positions are already looking weak. We badly need a few signings before the transfer window shuts or we're in trouble.

Yeah been like that last season had to manage it. That’s why we moved for Dalot. Will defo make a couple of signings!

We badly need them, for first game ideally.. but that is expecting too much probably. What is even our first choice defence right now if Valencia is injured going into first game against Leicester?| Dalot is injured also so we have a real problem with fullbacks.

Shaw Bailly Lindelof Young

Need to ship out one of Smalling/Jones for Maguire. I wouldn't be against Bonucci tbh. We really needs to get Sandro, because talented as Shaw is, it would insane to believe he can play a whole season of 50 games having not done so for United, if ever.

Martial needs to make his mind up this week. I want to keep him, but he needs to be fully in or he can gtfo, and be happy elsewhere. We haven't got time for half measures and we need to know if we will need to replace him.

Valencia said in an interview after the game he will be fit for the Milan game I’ve just read in various outlets. Dalot will be fit first week in September. TFM and Bailly can play there. CB will have everyone fit for first game. LB Shaw, Mitchell, Rojo. Think we can put out a strong defence that’s without any signings. As is can pretty much name our Leicester team now except for any new incomings.

Don’t know how long Young, Lingard, Rashford, Fellaini, Lukaku, Pogba will miss maybe the first game?

Javier Ribalta has left his role as United's chief scout to become Zenit's new sporting director after just a year at club. Understand 'no bad reason' behind move and Spaniard sees it as a 'great challenge' and chance to step up into a greater position. #mufc

Have to have any new signings before the first game, shorter transfer window this year that ends when league fixtures start.

Dont know if I watch a different Maguire to the rest of you, but to me he's stiff, has an error in him, and every little thing he does is massively exaggerated up by commentators, Joe Hart-syndrome.

Wouldn't be happy at all if he was our main CB signing. Solid player, but he's not a 50-60M signing - that's marquee figures in terms of defenders. Why not just sign Toby for that sort of money, or near half of that for Bonucci and spend the remainder elsewhere. Both of those players are on a different level to Maguire.

I would go for Bonucci over Maguire for now as well. A couple of good seasons out of Bonucci, and see how Maguire develops and maybe look at him again then.

Spurs want VVD money for Toby which is ridiculous considering his age and contract situation. And listening to Amoyals podcast Bonucci would rather go to France or stay in Italy. Plus he’s defo not the CB he was last on last seasons showing. Not many clubs fighting over him considering the supposed quality and seemingly good price he’s available for. Maybe for the reason Amoyal suggests.

Dont Agree about this myth about him being stiff or slow has the most completed dribbles of any defenders over the last 2 seasons.

Most dribbles completed of defenders in the last two Premier League campaigns:

1f947.png
Harry Maguire -- 80
1f948.png
Hector Bellerin -- 70
1f949.png
Antonio Valencia -- 66

And he’s not even in the top 10 slowest defenders in the league. Both stats coming from Sqwauka btw. And his passing and defending scores are as good as any also. Definitely agree he will be overpriced, but hey that’s the market. Watched last season review on demand last night and his composure is also very good. Could develop into a top top CB. There really isn’t any what I would say top draw CBs out there tbh. Another thing I like about Maguire is his Vidic like ability to get his head on attacking corners and get you about 5 goals a season.

Stats hey?

Speaking from an up-close and personal POV, the amount of times he brought the ball out, got dispossessed, then Leicester were hit the break as his lard **** couldn’t get back last year was criminal the games against L’pool.

But I have to disagree with Rh on one thing. I REALLY hope Utd drop silly money on him. ;)

Because Spurs have asked for 75m for a player with one year left on his contract...

One thing that I loved to see at WC about Maguire and Pickford, is their aggressiveness. Not that easy to push around and can become more in coming years. Defenders need to be commanding in their area and not pushed easily.

Tbh I do remember that as I watched him a fair bit to my fantasy team. Was bad in both games against you if I remember rightly. But don’t remember it happening to often. Remember him playing well against us, Chelsea and City.

Two bad games doesn't make you a terrible player. Otherwise Liverpool wouldn't have signed Alisson

Maguire covers two things were a really bad at, especially when Bailly isn't playing: winning the first ball, and carrying out the back

He's better than Smalling Jones and Rojo.

+ very good in attacking set pieces.
