No one expects the Spanish inquisition.
This is not strictly speaking about the EPL but LOL!
They Come Over Here...
In the Daily Mail, Charlie Sale is bemoaning an invasion of foreigners into the Championship, and he's an angry man. 'Spanish invading the Championship,' is the suitably grumpy headline.
'Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore's provocative advice to England manager Roy Hodgson is to start looking in the Championship for players because not enough of them are playing in a top flight full of worldwide recruits. Yet the trend this summer is pointing towards the best young players in the Championship not featuring in starting line-ups.
'The clubs are looking instead to buy experienced La Liga players attracted by the £15,000 to £20,000-a-week wages available in England's second tier compared to a £10,000-a-week average in Spain.'
Mediawatch knows that the Daily Mail might like to get its knickers in a twist over our brave lads not being given enough minutes, but this is a laughable overreaction.
Number of permanent Championship transfers this summer: 124
Number of those transfers involving imports from Spain: 6 (and one of them is Scottish)
Number of those over the age of 26 (and therefore nominally describable as 'experienced La Liga players'): 2
The only thing these arriving Spaniards could 'invade' is a phone box.
