Sega has announced that The Creative Assembly's next Total War game will be Rome 2, a sequel to its critically acclaimed 2004 strategy classic, Rome: Total War.

The game's due for release in 2013; at a recent preview event, The Creative Assembly told Eurogamer to expect it in the "second half" of next year.

After the narrow geographical focus of Shogun 2, the Total War series is returning to empire-building on a grand scale with Rome 2, which will feature the series' "most expansive turn-based campaign and the largest, most cinematic real-time battles". According to the developer, it's working with its biggest budget yet.

But there'll also be a new focus on the personal storylines and decisions of the player and key historical figures in the game, with family dilemmas and political plots playing an important part.

The first demonstration of the game featured the destruction of Carthage from the third Punic War. Multiplayer wasn't discussed, but lead designer James Russell said the studio was "planning something big".

Holy shitbiscuit, Rome was the bollocks. Hopefully this just builds on that game.

I wonder if they manage to make the AI more retarded. It'll be challenging, but I have no doubts the finished game will be missing a chromosome or two! If I got a denarius for every time the AI charged their general straight at a phalanx I'd have at least 539 denarii!

CA are pretty much guaranteed my money for any new TW game, but Rome was always the best of the series by far. It looks staggeringly good.

Gimme my elephants! ROAR!

Just hope I don't run into flaming pigs as I bulldoze my way to Roma.

Medieval 2 is my favourite entry in the franchise so far. First Rome was balls, although i agree it is most fun era to place the game in.

The more modern games like Empire were terrible for me, just play with artillery and explode everything. Take out entire army with one cannon? No problem.

They said they would actually make the AI think this time. Before the AI either viewed you as an enemy it wanted to destroy or a trade ally it could rely on. Let's see how it goes. I have my doubts about the game. The bad AI was the main reason I went over to Paradox titles, like Europa Universalis, Victoria 2 and Crusader Kings II. It's going to be interesting and I guess I'll be buying it after checking out peoples reviews on the Total War forums.

eeeeeekkk

i been playing rome: total war last few days, gonna start saving for a new computer so i will actually be able to play this one!

gonna be realistic numbers wise as well which will awesome thousands of troops rather than hundreds.

Really? It's generally accepted Rome was the best of the series by some margin. It didn't have many (if any at all) crippling bugs - unlike say the 2H unit bug for Med II - and the campaign was challenging for all factions, and it was pretty well-balanced.

Well... yeah. That's realistic. Cannon were lords of the battlefield.

I tend to agree with the school of thought that muskets and cannons are just not as fun as clashing swords.

Sure, using darthmod and setting up your troops to take full advantage of field of fire and terrain can be rewarding...but once they two sides start shooting at each other, it's sort of a wait and see who dies game. I couldn't count how many hours I sat watching units dwindle each other down.

Whatever floats your boat, I guess. I have to say I prefer the Roman and Medieval era for this style of game, but I reckon CA actually did a pretty good job of it in both realism and gameplay terms.

Rome Total War just pwned Medieval hands down. It's a game that'll stand the test of time, regardless of the graphics. It's the gameplay that makes it so incredibly enjoyable. Perfect game for me too as I love anything to do with the Roman Empire and it's politics and everything, and the military side was just fascinating with their tactics and everything.

Just a shame I was so **** at it lol

Rome was hardly balanced either before patches first expansion. Some units were ridicolously overpowered. Medieval 2 really offered a lot of balance and diversity when playing various factions, think i played through with like 20 of them hehe.

Well , of course it is. You know it. I know it. Sadly the AI in Empire:TW did not :D

Yeah, but the thing is with Rome is that they eventually got fixed. With Med II, the 2H unit bug NEVER got fixed, rendering some elite units pretty pointless. With Rome, generally the overpowered units had a price tag to match. Sure, it wasn't perfect, but at least everything did what it was meant to. I'd rather a few imbalances here and there over not actually being able to use certain types of unit effectively at all.

Heh. Shame, really.

Yeah, I play Paradox as well. Crusader Kings II is ******* awesome! I also play a lot of Civ - I just started a nuclear war with the Celts. TW is about satisfying the ADHD kid who likes shiny graphics and easy games. I don't like the premise they build the difficulty on either; instead of giving the AI better strategies, they just make their units better, which means nothing in Rome once you get elephants or Spartans. That you can't take out their economy either is annoying, as they don't actually use money, meaning blockading ports is completely useless. The bugs usually make the release version nigh unplayable. I remember watching my brother play the same TW: Empire battle for 4 hours because it would glitch and crash constantly. He eventually dropped Empire: TW and went back to Civ.

My friend seems obsessed with Crusader Kings II right now and the diplomacy of that game seems brilliant. Diplomacy has always been something that has let the TW games down a bit so if they could get it anywhere near CKII standards then it would be great. I just hope they build on all the great things about the previous titles and combine it together to make Rome 2 unbelievable. Expectations are high so I hope they deliver

ETW really sucked. I remember being able to crush huge armies with a small amount of troops, as long as you deployed your troops correctly.

What about a game of CK2 one day? Multiplayer could be awesome. I like smashing Turks and Muslims with the Byzantines, it's quite charming. :) The only thing I really complain about is that I think the Muslims are way too strong, which means that Iberia and Southern Italy almost always gets conquered by Muslims.

Go buy CK2! It's awesome and you'll have hours of fun, when you're on a break from FM12 and your real life :p
