No one thought about the effect on the stock markets this is going to have? Could be a crash tomorrow..
Or let us do something proactive for a change, instead of praying.
The protective chambers still haven't officially been breached.
That's all I got on that one...
we can donate to charities etc that are helping the aid effort in Japan. Not really anything we can do to stop the reactor from leaking the radiation
The problem isn't the reactor leaking radiation, it's if the protective container ruptures and allows the radiation to escape.
And exactly, pro-actively donating to charity > prayer.
am gonna go try and find somewhere in my town that is taking donations for the Japan effort. Lets hope that the protective layer doesn't rupture? Is there anyting that can be done to try and make sure it doesn't?
Venting it to reduce pressure, but that has the further implication of releasing some of the radioactive material from the rods.
is there a way they could vent it but collect the radioactive material in some kind of container?
Not really, unless someone fancies the suicide mission of going to contain the material separately. But then I guess the fuel rods are already in semi-meltdown, so the isotopes won't be able to be contained anyway. So, no.

What a shame...
Japanese government to inject roughly $85 billion to stabalise the economy after the quake, and warning of yet another explosion. But say the reactor "could" withstand the blast
Their economy has been in the **** for a long time now too as well. Not good at all.
Aye, was reading before that the quake and tsunami wiped 1% of economic growth. Some people may think its not a lot, but if your country is struggling already, it's pretty much a lot.
