Tonbridge Angels

2008/2009 Season

June 1st 2008 - (The Courier) Warrilow leaves Angels in the dumps.

Tommy Warrilow has today announced that he has left the helm at Tonbridge to manage established Blue Square South side Braintree. This comes just months after the former boss steared his team to the Blue Square South Divison after winning the 2007/2008 Ryman Isthmian playoffs in a 3-2 thriller against rivals Maidstone. Warrilow stated that whilst his heart will always belong to the people of Tonbridge his mind was somewhere else. Angels fans are lining a possible return for Neil Emblen who used to play for the club as a youngster. Neil Emblen is well known for his 115 appearances in a Wolverhampton shirt. Neils brother Paul Emblen who of course is a coach at Tonbridge said that he would welcome his brother with open arms, should he decide to join as the gaffer.

June 14th 2008 - (Kent and Sussex Weekly) Forget Emblen WE WANT HODGSON

Angels fans today are excited at the prospect of ex player and now Premiership manager Roy Hodgson taking the helm after he was quoted in an interview saying "It would certainly be a great challenge to go back to my former club and try to stear them up". This of course comes just after 1 week since Neil Emblen turned down the oppotunity to work alongside his brother at the Betterview stadium. Fulham fans will certainly be hoping that there wonder manager doesn't leave them in the dirt for a team 6 divisions below them.

June 26th 2008 - (The Courier) Out Of Ideas

Unfortunatly for the barmy army Hodgson has put things into perspective for the club by stating that "whilst managing Angels would be a great challenge it is not something that i personal am looking to take on" This has left Angel fans demanding that chairman Nick Sullivan makes a decision soon in regards to who will be taking the helm at the Betterview for the 2008/2009 campaign. With Angels gearing up for their toughest season in the clubs history one things for sure, they need a miracle worker.

July 1st 2008 - (The Courier) Hodgson > Emblen > O'Connor

Leeum O'Connor was today un-veiled as the new gaffer in charge at the Betterview stadium. Whilst Angels are keeping it close to home with O'Connor having played for Tonbridge Angels as a youth, the barmy army were expecting a manager with a higher reputation after being linked with two bigger names before O'Connor. The fans have agreed to give O'Connor until christmas to sway their opinions. O'Connor today gave a brief press conference where he kept it short and sweet, his closing message of "I am here to win games, not respect" has kept everyone in somewhat of a buzz for the 2008/2009 season.

July 8th 2008 - (KMFM)

Tonbridge Angels today have announced a link with Queens Park Rangers of the Championship. This partner ship will ensure that the Queens Park youth are given first team expierence, Queens Park will hold an annual friendly with Tonbridge in July of each season and will pay them a fee of 13k per year. Angels manager O'Connor has said that the link is a great chance to showcase some of Englands best young talent in the lower divisons. The question on everyones lips is who will O'Connor bring in. With all money from the club being transfered to the depleted wage which is is the minus one thing is for certain, there will be no money for the new manager to spend.

July 12th - (Kent and Sussex weekly) Angels secure one year loan deal for Joseph Oastler

Qpr youngster Joseph Oastler was the first to arrive from the Championship side, the 18 year old full back was snapped up at the age of 16 by Portsmouth and has since joined Queens Park this season. Oastler has instantly been sent out on a year long loan spell to the Blue Square South side to gain more first team experience.

(Sorry for the long break)

Febuary 18th - (The Courier) It's All Gone Bannanas!

Tonbridge Angels manager Leeum O'Connor today recieved malicious abuse from his fans as they moved into the bottom 3 of the table after a 1-1 draw with bottom of the league Welling. The barmy army struck O'Connor repeatedly with bannanas as he walked out of the ground after todays Blue Square South fixture. Angels went behind after just 7 minutes when defender Gavin Dayes was gifted a free header to stear his side into the lead. Jamie Cade went close just 2 minutes later but could only watch his shot rebound off of both posts before it was cleared. Whilst Angels were much on top of the game in the first half they couldn't turn that dominance into goals. After coming out of the tunnel for the second half Tonbridge seemed to have taken their foot of of the pedal and were nearly punished for it when Parkinsons header clipped the top of the cross bar. Jamie Cade rounded 2 Welling players to move one on one with the keeper only to be brought down. Anthony Storey stepped up to take the spot kick and slotted it into the bottom corner. Angels will now travel to the Crabble Athletic ground to face 2nd placed high flying rivals Dover.

Febuary 20th - (KMFM)

Adam Birchall scored a stunning effort from outside the box to take the score to 2-0. Collin then doubled his tally 5 minutes later when a mistimed clearance from Lewis Hamilton left Angels red faced. This loss puts Angels into 21st position with the fans calling for the managers head. O'Connor spoke out today against the fans saying "Angels have just been promoted to the divison, i had no money to spend, hardly any attraction to the big players, for the first time since August we have moved into the bottom 3 and i get abused for it? Utterly Ridiculous."

Febuary 23rd - (West Kent and Sussex Weekly) Mtandari Joins Angels.

Tottenham youth Takura Mtandari has joined Tonbridge on loan for the remainder of the campaign. Mtandari has been brought it to replace Oastler at full back for the club. We understand the un-capped 19 year old is looking forward to playing competative football and to try to save Angels from relegation. With only 5 months left on his contract manager Leeum O'Connor has began to open up discussion over a possible permanent move come July.

As Angels fell behind through Jack Wilsons first half injury time goal, they came out for the second half all guns blazing. Angels looked certain to score a goal but were hit on the counter, during which the play slowed down as the blues defender Scott recovered the ball only to be hacked down, the referee saw nothing wrong with the challenge and allowed play to continue. As keeper Lee Worgan tryed to pass the ball out of play so that medical attention could be allowed, the Basingstoke team continued to attack and evenutually score, all the while Scott was on the floor holding his hip. Scott was stretchered off of the pitch, and O'Connor's furious rant at the fourth official he was sent to the stands. Michael Scott's hip injury will keep him sidelined for 8-9 months. Hayes and Yeading striker was the victim of several puns this weekend after scoring a wondeful volley from 35 yards to seperate the sides. The play on of having a go fitted well with Marco Adaggio. This specualtive effort was the only thing to seperate the two teams over the 90 minutes of play.

Mr.O'Connors latest rant is about the closeness of league fixtures for his side. O'Connor claims the fixture list is too packed for players at his side. "The lads are tired and we are constantly playing 4 games a week, Premiership play 2 in a week and moan so why should we have the play 4" This comes just after O'Connor watched his side crash and burn against Weymouth 4-2.

December 19th - (The Courier) There's your break Mr.O'Connor.

Leeum O'Connors rant about closeness of fixtures seems to have little evidence to suggest the reason for poor form. Today after a 2 week break he watched his side romped 4-0 by Farnbourough. Mr.O'Connor claims that his players were left too long without a match and were not properly match fit for the game. The FA have politley reminded him about his comments last week and this week and jokingly have asked "just where do you want it?"
