Civilization 6 just got announced. Not much information yet, but apparently Ed Beach got promoted to Lead Designer. Which is great news, he's the guy who worked on Civ V expansions and manage to somehow salvage the game after disaster that was vanilla release.

Can't wait to see what he can do, now that he got to design the whole thing from the ground up. They need to up their game anyhow. It's not 2010 anymore, there's serious competition on strategy market. Civilization is not an auto-success anymore, it needs to be great to try and compete with Paradox or Amplitude Studios.

Oh god my poor wallet and social life, year of the strategy game this year be it turn based/grand strategy whatever. Stellaris, Hearts of iron, Total Warhammer, endless Space 2 and now this fucksake didn't want to go out anyway

I'm tempted to get Sterallis I admit. I'm torn between one of the following-Overwatch, Sterallis, World of Warcraft Legion pre-order. Hardest choice I've had to make in such a long time

God now thats a hard choice to make!!!

Putting aside my Paradox Fanboism for a second on stellaris

Early game is one of the best I have ever played if not the best when the stars align (badum tiss). But the game has issues, AI can be passive sometimes, mid game can potentially be a grind if you get boxed in, you can focus internally to make yourself stronger but needs more internal mechanics to make peace time more interesting, combat is satisfying but can essentially turn into doomstack vs doomstack. Its 2-3 DLCs away from being stupendous alot of potential now just needs the paradox treatment and it will be an absolute monster of a game. If you can fight temptation wait till at least 1 dlc hits. Its very good but needs love, although once modding scene gets cranking this game.will be unreal. Paradox have released a 3d maya exporter for people to add their own sprites **** just got real !!!

So it's a bit of a Crusader Kings situation. Started off very good but got even better with DLC. Paradox do make great strategy games that's for sure. If I need to wait a couple of months I don't mind doing that. I don't mind waiting for perfection. And I just know it's a game I'm going to 100% nerd out on lol

Haha I have been doing just that think I have 30 hours already which to say i am supposed to be revising is impressive haha. Honestly its all there just needs some love but I know Mike and Subtle have it to so maybe worth asking them, especially Subtle as I know he has been smashing Overwatch like yourself.

Its the mods that are going to make this game though I have seen on the workshop that there is some kind of warhammer graphics mod already and the actual 40k mod has started and the star wars and star trek are gathering pace too. Hate I am at work tonight just taken a ring world wanted to see what happened next haha.

Star Wars mod? Ok sold :D

I don't know if I can even get back into Civ tbh. I've been playing these games for 25 years now, but Civ V and Civ:BE was a total disappointment, there's just no depth there for people who want a challenge on high difficulty levels. Civ 4 from Emperor difficulty and higher is ******* brutal, Civ 5 was smooth sailing.

I don't expect the same complexity as in Paradox games, because Civ always tried to keep itself easy to learn. But the whole formula became far too familiar and stale, they need to shake things up a bit to make it interesting again.

Funnily enough I was having this same conversation with Subtle the other day, I mean I do like Civ and I was a big fan of 5 once it had, had its expansions. But the clustefuck that was BE means it won't be a day one purchase.

With Civ 6 really depends what they do like you say it has become stale and BE has hurt them so bad with the community. If they do what paradox do and include all the stuff from 5 in 6 with religion and tourism etc then add new stuff I'll watch with interest if they take the Sims approach and strip the game back and then try to resell us previous expansions then I'll be giving it a miss.

But what I was saying to Subtle was that now I mainly play EU4 and more recently Stellaris turn based just does not have the same appeal anymore because I am to used to playing in real time. Also when you consider the diplomacy in EU4 makes civ look like it has the depth of a puddle they really need to tackle this issue for players out like me and yourself. I'll be watching it with great interest but I will be taking in a tonne of lets plays before purchasing and scrutinising them.

Right just logged into steam and new Civ is priced at £49.99 and digital deluxe is priced at £69.99 (I know they will be cheaper on cd key sites but that's not the point), are Firaxis and 2K having a ******* laugh here or what? This is basically asking the community to lower their trousers and bend over whilst we ******* dry *** you. I am out this is me done with Civ that pricing is absolutely ridiculous.

Yeah that price for Civ is an absolute joke. And tbh the last Civ wasn't a patch on previous versions. It was good-but not that good, and if the new Civ is the same it makes it even more ridiculous. Prices for pre-purchases are getting out of hand. What happened to demos ffs. Safe to say I will not be going anywhere near Civ

Yeah, the price is nuts. But anyhow, there's more information out now, and it actually looks quite good.

First of all, there will be limited unit stacking. Details are unknown yet, but it's likely going to be technology based. With some technology you can stack 2 units, with further one you can stack 3, and so on. There is also a new class of "support" combat units that you can attattch to other units, to make some sort of combined force. I'm assuming this means joining infantry and artillery or something like that. This seems like a good balance between Civ 4's doom stacks, and Civ 5's one unit per hex, which made combat more tactical, but also had it's problems, especially in the late game when you were dealing with massive armies.

The most interesting thing however, is they seem to be putting huge emphasis on developing your empire based on what's available in your geographical location. This is done through something called research boosts. They give an example like this:

The masonry boost requires stone blocks and quarries. You can research that tech by hand without access to stone, but if you can find a quarry site and get one up and going, you unlock the tech boost and that gives you half of the research points needed for masonry.Think about naval research – [in previous Civ games] you could research sailing and navigation, even if you’re landlocked in the middle of a continent. Now you can still try to do that but it’s going to take you forever. You can’t just burn through the tech tree the same way in every game because the map is going to force you to think through things

This sounds like a fantastic idea. With a system like this you can't just rush the same things, every game, over and over again. You'll have to adapt to what's available, every game will be different. That should definitely shake up the formula quite a bit.

Another huge change, is that cities now expand to other hexes on the map, rather than inwards. Every city improvement will be placed on a global map. Again, there's some sort of bonuses here to gain based on location. Developing your city will require a strategic approach now. This also should be a great change. Endless Legend has a similar system, and it works quite well.

Than there's usual promises of better AI, improved dimplomacy, and so on, but we've heard it all before so I'll reserve judgement on that until the game comes out. But the new systems are looking very good indeed.

Also, supposedly all the features of Civ 5 expansions will make it to the Civ 6 release. Religion, tourism etc. should all be there.

So after initial doubts I am now cautiously optimistic.

**** Hearthstone. Seriously-**** the game to **** and back. Ranking tanked from 14 to 19 because of **** RNG. Sick of losing to terribad players who get the perfect RNG and the perfect answers via perfect top decking skills. Obviously their skills are far superior to mine or they wouldn't be able to top deck so goddam well. Now I know exactly how Kripp feels

Stop slacking, I wanna hear your opinion on Stellaris. I don't trust the general internets because Paradox psychofans can be unbearable.

Tbf mate I am officially a paradox fanboi after purchasing field marshall edition of HOI 4 ( although in my defence I would have bought the expansions anyway and had money on my steam wallet.) Although aside from when Vicky 3 releases HOI will be the only game that has a chance of ever matching my 1k in hours in EU4 over my 2 steam accounts.

Anyway Stellaris, I really like it you can see the potential, you can see how mods are going to put this on a whole other level. But it has issues which Paradox to their credit have been pretty open about and the dev diary this week put a road map down on when they hope to sort these things anyway to the game.

The early game is absolutely amazing, they nailed it imo it is the best early game in any 4x. Everything is paced so well, there so much to do and see and explore. Race creation is pretty neat too and you can get pretty immersed in it. Combat is oddly satisfying even though it turns into doomstack vs doomstack but I think that comes from years of watching two little men shoot each other or two nato counters with an arrow and numbers more than anything. But I like it. Ship design is pretty cool although needs some balancing and you need more information on why things do what they do but this is something coming in next patch. The amount of anamolies and early game event chains is pretty high and the early game doesnt feel to repetitive which is good.

Mid game as in a fair few 4x games is when things start to slow down. Sectors are not working as intended, slavery is kinda broken as in pops can end up happy being slaves which should be an option but hard to attain but right now from what I have seen on the forums is the norm. Exploration can be restrictive as diplomacy surprisingly is not that great, AI can be passive but then I think it is based on ethics because if you have opposing ethics war is inevitable. Theres no trade which is dissapointing given the trade systems in other games I mean Vicky has the best economy in any game even Distant Worlds. All these issues paradox have said will get fixed and are on them, they said they had a lot of mid game content already done but due to balancing witheld whilst they made the early game and late game crisis'.

Late game things improve though with the crisis mechanic I just mentioned is totally random could be your robot workers rising up, a fallen empire deciding they want to take over or beings from another dimension turning (ala reapers mass effect).

The game has massive massive potential couple of patches and a DLC or 2 and this game will be an absolute monster. Also mods are going to be mental, 3 big mods already in the works 40K, Star wars and star trek all look well on the way and paradox has released a 3d maya exporter so modders can now put all the ships etc in.

The best way to describe it is vanilla EU4, when it released was great but lacked content mid and late game and trade etc was pretty one dimensional. When you look at EU4 now its a totally different beast and for grand strat/4x vets like myself its one of the best out there. Right now Stellaris is on par with whats already out there given its faults, but it'll get sorted so just depends if you want to be there for the beginning or not.

I'll tell you what the most annoying thing is though mate, was doing the new Byzantium achievement in EU4 Mare Nostrum, basically restor the old roman empire borders. Was chomping my way through France and Iberia and put it on hold a few nights to dump time into stellaris ****** 1.17 patch dropped second night bastards!

Actually playing through Halo 5, never finished 4 as nothing much had changed. Ordering a team around, though basic, makes the game feel much fresher.

Really enjoying it! £11 well spent
