What threw me more was that they picked Seedorf who had flamed out at Groningen and been fired literally days beforehand. Maybe I need to get myself fired before I apply for jobs in future...

The problem I'm facing now is that I stayed out of the race for a heap of jobs that looked interesting in May/June and since the world up the only jobs that have come up have been Holland, England, Barcelona, Arsenal and Juventus so I haven't had anything that I'd be considered for. Its looking like I will be starting this season jobless and having to wait for some firings...

Season 5 – The Search…

After declining the Turkey offer I was sure that there would be many more coming my way. Turns out I was wrong. The only jobs that became available after the World Cup were the English and Dutch national team manager roles, neither of whom considered my application. Shortly after the Barcelona, Arsenal and Juventus manager positions all became available in quick succession, again no one was interested.

The season began and I was sitting at home in Oss. I had retained my base there as I saw it as the perfect central location to search for my next job. As the weeks ran into months though I began to go stir-crazy. They say idle hands are the tools of the devil and I was running over and over in my head the Ajax interview trying to figure out where I had gone wrong. As it was I couldn’t be too angry about Ajax’s decision – Seedorf actually had them playing nice football and they were topping the Eredivisie a few months in. It pained me to see Oss had fallen off the map since I left but they had to stand on their own feet sometime. I had left the club in a good spot with a good squad so I don’t feel responsible. PSV though were floundering. I can’t imagine they were going to be happy with Ronald Koeman’s performance for long sitting one point off relegation.

As October rolled around though some jobs began to pop up. First Frankfurt, who had been relegated to Bundesliga B and were languishing in 18th despite having aims of winning promotion and the famous Bordeaux, who were sitting down in the table in 16th in Ligue 1 but desiring Champions League football. Obviously Bordeaux represented the higher profile of the two jobs but Frankfurt were offering a higher transfer budget and with a 52,000 seat stadium they have the financial muscle to compete in Germany so either job I considered attractive. I applied for and was granted an interview for both roles.

Season 5 - Back In the Game

In the end the decision was made for me. Bordeaux would hire Zidane as manager and Frankfurt would offer me the job. I really like the idea of Frankfurt. They have given me effectively a 2 and a half year contract. I would hope by the end of that we are at least established back in the Bundesliga.

Frankfurt are a club who, although they have fallen on somewhat hard times at the moment, used to be a European force. In the 60's they made a Champions League final and in the 80's they won the UEFA Cup. It is up to me now to get them aiming for those lofty heights again.

Although the Board indicated to me in the interview that they wanted promotion, due to the mess the club finds itself in, they have adjusted their objectives and now are only demanding a mid table finish. Frankly, if I can't get this club back into the top half this season I should be fired.

I took the first afternoon to go over some recent games and it immediately apparent who are going to be my key players in our push back up the table. Goalkeeper Trapp will need to play well as I feel that the defensive unit is the weakest part of the team. Up front I will be looking to former German International Aaron Hunt for goals. But I expect our shining star to be our own answer to Eden Hazard, Marc Stendera. The diminutive German has the potential to be world class and shouldn't be wasting his time in Bundesliga B and I doubt he will be keen to stay down here for long so it is up to me to ensure the team improves and matches his ambition.

Season 5 – October Roundup

Season 5 Game 1 – Bundesliga B, Paderborn (h)

When I got down to preparing for this one a large contributor to the clubs current issues was immediately apparent. Injuries – and lots of them. I’m going to have to keep a close eye on my physio crew here to make sure this isn’t systemic.

View attachment 260258

Taking a look at the table the magnitude of the task I face is obvious. I am confident though that we can rise from last place to be at least mid table by the end of the season. We are a long way from fellow former Bundesliga giants Koln so I think the league title, no matter how well we play, is out of reach.

View attachment 260256

Looking at my squad there are some player’s tailor made for the 4-3-3 I used with success at Oss so I will be employing that here to begin with. We started well in the new shape dominating the early stages of our match with Paderborn. We got our reward in the 28th minute when Multhaup was dragged down in the box and Stendara stepped up to score his first of hopefully many goals under my reign.

Although I didn’t ask the guys to drop off we effectively controlled the remainder of the match and ran out nice 1 nil winners. Good performance considering that we are still unfamiliar with the system I want to use here and with that we have left the relegation zone and find ourselves in 15th!!

Season 5 Game 2 – Bundesliga 2, Hamburg St. Pauli (a)

Well that was disappointing. The papers the next day said that St Pauli were a bit lucky and although the stats would suggest it was a pretty even affair I felt it was anything but. We were out enthused and out hustled. There’s some poor confidence here and some poor attitudes. Things need too change and change fast. Once the first goal went in you could see 11 heads drop. Even though I implored them to chase the game it obviously just isn’t in their DNA yet. I will change that though.

Season 5 Game 3 – Bundesliga 2, Berlin-Kopenick Dammfeld (h)

A chance to bounce back here for the guys and I took the opportunity to rotate out a few of my bad eggs to see if it made a difference. It seemingly did as we took the lead through a well placed Stendera shot just after the quarter hour. Unfortunately our good start was undone by some poor marking allowing Gulde to lash home on the volley from a corner and then Matuszczyk doubled their advantage in right on the stroke of half time. The second half was much of the same. We dominated but couldn’t find the goal. I have a lot of work to do to overcome the poisonous culture that exists here…

Season 5 Game 4 – German Cup 2nd rd, RBL (a)

What a fantastic performance against a team sitting 6th in our league currently. We got off to a fantastic start before that came back at us but we dominated the second half and ran out easy winners. Lets hope we can carry this performance over into the league...

We have dropped back into the relegation zone after our decent start this month. We need to start moving up the table and quick.

If you have a moment spare, I'd appreciate it if you'd check out my story too ! Thanks :)

Season 5 – November Roundup

Season 5 Game 5 – Bundesliga B, Aue (a)

Not the worst result – I’ll take away draws any day, particularly when we find ourselves in our predicament. I thought Stendera was a standout today, he was unlucky not to have multiple goals.

View attachment 260219

Season 3 Game 6 – Bundesliga B, Mainz (h)

Big derby here evidenced by the 50,000+ crowd for a Bundesliga 2 match!! And we were phenomenal. Really we were unlucky not to win by more. The only downer was the 3 forced substitutions all from injury. Stendera is now out for 10 or so days with a thigh injury, Pourle only picked up a cut so he is out a similar timeframe and Oczipka was just being soft and wont miss any time.

Season 3 Game 7 – Bundesliga B, Darmstadt (a)

My FC Oss teams became renowned for their fast starts and it seems that my Frankfurt side is slowly beginning to take on my identity as Russ put us ahead from a corner in the 21st minute. Darmstadt could only muster a solitary shot to our 11 in the first half, a great away performance. We weren’t finished there and carried it into the second half as Hunt put us two up 4 minutes in. We held the lead easily from there – this was our best defensive performance since I took over as we limited a side above us on the table to only 3 shots, 0 on target, at their home ground.

View attachment 260216

Season 3 Game 8 – Bundesliga B, Sandhausen (h)

Again with the fast starts, we were ahead just after the quarter hour from Budamir and then looked to be coasting before a horrendous refereeing decision gave Sandhausen a way back into the game – 1 all at the break. Disaster struck just on the hour mark when Russ scored an own goal to give Sandhausen the lead which they miraculously held to the final whistle. Sandhousen did something amazing today, scoring 2 goals despite only having 1 shot on target for the entire match. What a joke…

Up till this performance I was gaining confidence that we had turned the corner but this was poor. On the plus side we have moved up the 14th and are within striking distance of our mid table goal.

Just caught up with this story mate and it’s a really good read! I like the fact you’re moving around, but not managing the biggest and best teams. Frankfurt are a pretty big club in Germany so if you can get them back to the Bundesliga you’ll be in business. Be interesting to see how you do over the coming months!

Big club and second tier of German football ain't too shabby! Stendera is a boss, had him on FM14 with Crawley in the Prem and he was unbelievable.

Yeah my problem here is that he is so tempermental in this game because his morale was completely shot thanks to the former manager!! Apparently there are more than a few guys ****** at me for not allowing them to move on following relegation despite them never asking me to leave and me joining only after the transfer window shut...

Season 5 – December Roundup

Season 5 Game 9 – Bundesliga 2, RBL (a)

It has been a real juggling act with some of the guys so far this season. One week they are sulking about not being able to leave and then next they are ready to run through brick walls for you. This was one of those weeks and the guys played tremendously. We took the lead from a fantastic Aaron Hunt strike early in the first half and from there we were content to sit and defend. Whilst RBL had slightly more shots we always seemed in control and could have even extended our lead late. Good game.

View attachment 259708

Season 5 Game 10 – Budesliga 2, Inglostadt (h)

And this is where the bad side of some of my guys comes out. Simply encouraging them at home is apparently grounds to sulk. In the end we played Inglostadt to a stalemate although we perhaps shaded the contest overall. If we can bring in some reinforcements in the January window who are committed to the cause we will have no issues getting back above mid table.

Season 5 Game 11 – Bundesliga 2, Braunschweig (a)

2 days before Christmas we faced Braunschweig at their place, they were sitting in 6th spot so we knew it would be a tough last match before the winter break. Stendera was stood down for this one, his attitude is cancerous at the moment and, although I wont be actively shopping him in the upcoming transfer window, if a decent bid comes in I will be cashing in on him. The change worked amazingly as 2 goals from Pourle and another from Eisfield gave us a 3 goal lead only 26 minutes in. Although Braunschweig would score a late goal to make 3-1 at the break I was chuffed with the lads and let them know.

Obviously I should have kept my big mouth shut because 15 minutes after the restart and 2 Braunschweig shots later it was 3 all! The game would end that way and, to be honest whilst it feels right now like 3 points thrown away, it isn’t the worst result.

I feel as though I am definitely having a positive impact on the side irrespective of how it feels sometimes and I went back to the form guide to prove it. Here is Frankfurt’s form pre my arrival with only one league win.

And here it is since my arrival.

Nice upturn in results there, hopefully it can continue and you can steer them well away from the relegation positions and to the top half.

It's a shame Stendera is being a ****, I see you have Thomas Eisfeld in your team though, the former Arsenal man. Could you show us his stats?

Season 5 – January Roundup

Prior to any game this month we welcomed some reinforcements from the transfer market. Nuri Sahin came in to help with the lack of creativity I am seeing from our midfield and Kelechi Iheanacho came in to strengthen us up front.

January ends up being a bit of a dead month in Germany. I left my assistant Wolgang Rolff in charge as we played a number of friendlies throughout January but no real games of note.
