Season 5 - February Roundup

Season 5 Game 12 – Bundesliga 2, Heidenheim (h)

Disappointing. We should have won this match and boy did I ever let them know it!

Season 5 Game 13 – Bundesliga 2, Dusseldorf (a)

Still not great, but better. We came away with a draw at a tough side’s home ground. I’m still pulling my hair out at some basic mistakes the guys are making though…

Season 5 Game 14 – Bundesliga 2, Essen (h)

Games like this are becoming must wins for us but when Kauter scored with a howitzer from 30 yards after only 4 minutes I was expecting the worst. Thankfully the guys stood up today and goals from Bader, Hunt and Iheanacho put us 3-1 up at the break. Hunt made it 4 just after the restart and we were coasting. We ended up winning by the 4-1 scoreline and the win took us to 14th. There really isn’t all that much space between us and our goal, we just need to get on a run.

Season 5 - March Roundup

Season 5 Game 15 – Bundesliga 2, Osnabruck (h)

We took the lead here on the half hour mark when we were awarded our first penalty in god knows how long. In an end to end period we then immediately conceded but also replied with another of our own almost directly from the restart. Going into the break with a 2-1 lead felt good. Unfortunately we conceded again on the hour mark. After making some changes we then scored what appeared to be the winner four minutes from time however it was ruled out for offside – heartbreaker.

Season 5 Game 16 – German Cup Third Round, Ingolstadt (a)

To be honest I wasn’t too disappointed in this result. I played the reserves and they didn’t disgrace themselves. Now we can concentrate on the league.

Season 5 Game 17 – Bundesliga 2, Chemnitz (H)

This game is my 200th in management. I really want a win here.

Now that’s more like it!! Great team performance. Solid at the back and incisive going forward. Doubles to Hunt and Iheanacho with a goal to Lucas Garcia, who we amazingly picked up on a free transfer just before the window closed, sealed the game. Fantastic stuff and validation that I can sit the guys sulking and get good results.

Season 5 Game 18 – Budesliga 2, Koln (a)

Koln were top with a gap to second so we knew this would be a tough fixture. Good result though, whilst we really didn’t create many chance of note neither did they so I’m pleased with the draw.

Season 5 Game 19 –Budesliga 2, Frankfurt Erienbruch (h)

Derby Day. We were dominant in the first half holding our opponents to the solitary shot and we got our reward in the 38 minute when Bader made a mazey run into the box from wide before firing a shot that appeared to be cleared off the line but the referee’s wristwatch, a new inclusion in the Bundesliga 2 this season, indicated it had crossed the goal line before being cleared. When we were awarded a penalty in the 54th minute that Hunt dispatched the home fans were raucous. Iheahancho let fly with a piledriver in the 88th minute that sreamed into the top corner to send the fans into delirium! Great day to be an Eintracht fan!!

We have now moved up to 10th spot and the added bonus is that some of my bad eggs seem to be coming around. Stendera will be given the opportunity to prove his dedication to the cause from the bench over the coming games.

Season 5 Game 20 – Bundesliga 2, Paderborn (a)

This one came rather quickly after the Derby so I was debating whether to rotate but decided to stick with the side that has been playing so well. My decision was vindicated when Iheanacho put us ahead inside 2 minutes - fantastic start. We played well the remainder of the half, not even allowing the home side a single shot. We started off a little sluggish after the restart and I subbed a couple off as they were starting to tire, particularly Hunt. The changes had the desired effect as we attacked with renewed vigur, with only the post stopping Iheanacho extending the lead. As the game wore on we became happy to sit off and defend and we ran it out untroubled – good win.

This win has moved us up to 9th. When I took over the team had played 9 games and were in last spot. Since then we have begun a slow process of sorting out the culture in the club and that has resulted in a climb up the table that has gained momentum as things are turning around. Lets hope we can continue to build on this.

Thanks mate - promotion is out of reach this season but it will definitely be the goal next year!!

Season 5 - April Roundup

Season 5 Game 21 – Budesliga 2, Hamburg St Pauli (h)

We were without Iheanacho and Kinsombi as they were travelling to their international matches for this one but it didn’t seem to affect us as we were ahead within seconds thanks to Bader. Nagasawa would equalise shortly after for St Pauli – our first goal conceded for ages but we were back in front not long after when a low Bader cross was turned into his own goal by a St Pauli defender. When Hunt popped up in the box before finishing with a sharp turn and shot we were looking good and took a 3-1 lead into the break. Stendera was brought on after the break for the first time since rejoining the first team squad and although neither team threatened much from there it was good to see him back enjoying his football. Up to 8th now.

Season 5 Game 22 – Budesliga 2, Berlin-Köpenick Dammfeld (a)

We welcomed our African internationals back for this one and Iheanacho picked up where he left off scoring after 10 minutes to give us the lead. We were quite dominant for the remainder of the half but couldn’t extend our lead. Just after the break Stendera was brought on for Hasebe who was struggling with a knock. I’m not sure if that was the catalyst but after that Berlin-Köpenick Dammfeld came back into the game and equalised in the 84th minute after a defensive lapse – disappointed to have dropped points here.

Season 5 Game 23 – Bundesliga 2, Aue (h)

It was apparent from the first whistle that Aue was coming today to play for the draw and they did that very successfully. We had very few clear cut chances so fair play to them – I’ve asked my teams to do the same many time in my career so far so I can hardly be too despondent when someone else does it to me.

Season 5 Game 24 – Bundesliga 2, Mainz (a)

Mainz have taken up first spot on the table as Koln is in free fall but this week I had both Wolfgang Jung and Aaron Hunt approach me asking that if Koln make an offer for them that they be allowed to talk. Frankly, whilst I don’t wish to lose either, they are both replaceable so I will be letting them go if Koln come calling. The game itself was a close fought tussle with the scores locked at 1 all after at the break thanks to goals from Kadrii and Iheanacho. The second half was a pure stalemate. We were trying to attack and so were they we were just cancelling each other out and the game finished a draw, Good result though away at a good side. Unfortunately, due some sides below us winning we slipped to 9th at the end of April. Still with only 3 games to go we are almost assured of finishing in line with expectations.

Pendulum has really swung. Looking good, only a season or two until you hit one of the Big 5 or so European top tiers!

Full disclosure - I tried to watch GOT on catch up with FM up still in the background last night and my laptop decided that was a bit too much for it to handle and crashed. I got up this morning dreading having to replay a month or two's worth of games but luckily I had an autosave point just before the Aue game so only the 2 to replay.

Aue

Had another nil all draw. Very frustrating.

Mainz

Was headed for a nil all draw which would have replicated the games above as closely as just about possible but Iheanacho popped up with a goal in injury time. I aint giving it back though :)

I played with the same formation and tactics as I had first time round and used the same team talks (found myself in the exact same positions except for the post game of the Mainz one).

Multi-tasking never ends well, especially when its FM & GOT! :P

Season 5 - May Roundup

Season 5 Game 25 – Bundesliga 2, Dramstadt (h)

Before this game I decided to take stock of where we are and what I want to do next season. Now that we are in 6th it is likely we will finish exactly in line with expectations. I’ve had a few thoughts running through the back of my head that we haven’t been positive enough in the tactics I’ve used, particularly at home. As such, for this one, I’ve decided to run a 4-2-3-1 essentially sacrificing my defensive midfielder for a pure attacking midfielder. I’m also hoping this formation plays to Stendera’s strengths and I can get him positive about next season or else I will need to cash in on him.

The formation worked an absolute treat, despite losing a player early in the second half we dominated from start to finish. Great stuff! Stendera played in integral role in both goals also so I am very happy with his contributions today.

Season 5 Game 26 - Bundesliga 2, Sandhausen (a)

Not real sure how we didn’t come away with a win here but I think sometimes you just have to accept you were unlucky. On another day we might have 5 or 6 nil…

View attachment 259084

Season 5 Game 27 – Budesliga 2, RBL (h)

And now I’m wishing I had changed formations earlier! Stendera was electric today and has certainly played his way back into my plans for next season!! We finished the year in 6th spot which, given where we were when I took over, is an achievement in my books!

My main issue now is shaving some cost off the wage bill. A couple of my top 15 earners are retiring and another few I’ve already arranged transfers for but most will have their fate decided over the coming weeks.

View attachment 259082

What is your wage bill out of interest? Some big earners there!

It was approx 650k a week. Looking to work it back down to around 550k if I can.

That's not bad for a 2nd tier club! Bout the same as I had at QPR, heaps more then I have at Deportivo!

Its outrageous really! But I guess they have been a Bundesliga club up until the current season.

Season 6 - Preseason Roundup

Wow, and so ends probably the most hectic preseason I've had yet in my short career. I managed to move on a number of players, additionally most of my transfers in were in the way of free transfers as our financial situation isn't the best. I expect Rossiter to add a little more steel to my central midfield, Kakuta will be expected to provide wing depth and Naughton will step straight in as first choice right back.

View attachment 258953

There are still another couple of players who might make their way out yet before the close of the transfer window. As you can see above though there were significantly more players leaving than coming in and that is because I have a number of youth prospects who will be blooded into the first team squad over the coming year, the most promising of which is young Marvin Suater who, at only 16, will be backing up Stendera.

View attachment 258952

The main driver behind these moves has been to get the wage budget under control. I have successfully done that slashing the bill that stood at 650,000 pounds a week last season to now under 390,000 pounds a week.

View attachment 258951

In doing so though we don't appear to have sacrificed quality. In preaseason we first travelled to Africa for a quick 2 match tour and then we came back to play at 3 Bundesliga clubs in an attempt to help raise some money. All 3 Bundesliga clubs fielded full strength sides and we performed very well.

View attachment 258949

The trick now will be to carry that form over into the season where the bookmakers have placed us favorites to gain promotion. Can't say I disagree with them after the off season we had.

Sauter looks like a serious talent!!

Not wrong. He was here when I arrived so it wasn't in the intake whilst I was here but still, he looks the goods. Frankfurt's facilities are pretty good too.

Season 6 - July Roundup

Season 6 Game 1 – Bundesliga 2, Aue (h)

Just the two games this month - We went down early in this one, conceding a sloppy 18th minute goal after failing to clear properly from a corner. I wasn’t really happy at halftime and the boys could tell and they turned it around admirably in the 2nd half. Kakuta had started this one with Malthaup injured and pressed claims for a regular starting berth with 2 goals.

Season 6 Game 2 – Bundesliga 2, Darmstadt (a)

Iheanacho got us off to just about the perfect start here with 2 goals inside 6 minutes. When Stendera slammed home a poor clearance from a Hunt cross we were coasting. Schorr was sent off for the visitors on 51 minutes and at that point it looked like the floodgates might open but we were also soon down to 10 men when Kinsombi received his marching orders. From there we saw the game out and finished easy 3 nil victors. Yes it is only early days but it is still a lot nicer to be at the top, rather then the bottom, of the table.
