Great job mate, going to be a big job keeping them up! Assuming you don't move on of course.

Thanks mate - with every job I've had so far I've been sure I was moving on at the end of the season whereas with Oss I'll only be leaving if it is a decent job.

Season 4 - Preseason Roundup

Prior to the season getting underway I was presented with the Manager of the Year award for the Jupiler League. This is my second such award in 2 years and I thought I might cheekily throw my hat in the ring of the vacant Anderlecht job and, although I got an interview, I was overlooked for the role. I kept an eye out for any other openings that could have interested me but to be honest there was none that stood out that I would be considered for so I decided to go back to Oss but to stay on a month by month contract to keep my options open.

We played through preseason pretty well and I gained some confidence that we might be able to keep our heads above water this season. Time will tell though.

View attachment 263598

Given limited reputation and resources available it was a struggle to bring anyone in to help strengthen in our fight against relegation. A few free transfers and loan signing were all we could manage so we will be taking pretty much the same squad as last season minus a few players who left on free transfers.

We are under no illusions though as to the magnitude of the task ahead of us. Our preseason media prediction is to finish dead last. Let's see if we can't prove a few people wrong!!

Season 4 - August Roundup

Season 4 Game 1 – Eredivisie, FC Twente (h)

So this was it, my first match in charge in the Eredivise. Things didn’t start so well when Keskin was forced from the field through injury in only the 3rd minute. He had an injury plagued campaign last year and this year wasn’t looking any different… Things took a turn for the better in te 32nd minute. A Dammers through ball found its way to Wildschut and he was felled in the area. Koubemba stood up to take the resultant spot kick and he made no mistake.

We started the second and were playing nicely. We made some changes in the 75th minute and I asked the guys to drop off defensively. This didn’t work as well as I’d hoped as Castaignos got on the end of a driven cross and headed home an equaliser. We weren’t behind long though as a ball was played into Wildschut’s feet and he was felled for a 2nd time. Penalty and red card to Tapia. Koubemba slotted home his and our 2nd. With Twente down to ten I thought we had it in the bag but up popped Castaignos again to score after a collecting a rebound to break the home fan’s hearts. A draw isn’t a bad result but the 3 points would have been nice.

Season 4 Game 2 – Eredivisie, Zwolle (a)

Once we went behind just before the half hour here we struggled. Zwolle were two ahead thanks to a Cazzola goal that came from a Appels mistake. When Ondann put them 3 up with a move the carved us up through the middle the game was over. This one showed us that we have a long way to go…

Season 4 Game 3 – Eredivisie, NAC Breda (h)

This one started fairly slowly with both teams just feeling each other out. We had a great chance on 40 minutes but Dammers could only strike the bar with his close range volley. We were made to ay when Muhren scored from a corner shortly after the break. From there we pressed for an equaliser. A Kok mistake lead to a second for Breda and although we did what we could to get back in the game in truth Breda always looked more likely to extend their lead.

Season 4 Game 4 – Eredivisie, VVV (h)

We took the lead early here through a Basham free kick the he placed over the wall from just outside the 18. Simone was then hammered on the edge of the area and although it looked to me like it was outside the referee awarded the penalty. Simone then stepped up to take it but saw it saved. Thankfully Falkenstein had the presence of mind to follow the shot in and slotted home the rebound.

Falkenstien extended our lead five minutes after the break with a nice turn and shot from just inside the area and we were coasting. We contrived to allow VVV back into the game on 60 minutes needlessly giving away a penalty that was converted. Both teams had goals disallowed for offside as time ran down but it was Wildschut who sealed it in the 89th minute. Our first Eredivisie win and it couldn’t have come at a better time. Now we have something to build on.

Not too bad a start, you should survive this season with similar results :)

Thanks mate - lets hope so. Still keeping a lazy eye on the available jobs page. If anything really interesting comes up I might throw my hat in the ring.

Definitely have a fight on your hands mate. Really want to see you continue with Oss but also interested to see what else might pop up!

Thanks mate. I'm really just trying to address each scenario how 24yr old me would have. At Oss Rhys is only on 1k a week so if another job comes up that pays more and is at a club with a higher reputation than I know I would have jumped ship without a second thought when I was that age!

Season 4 September Roundup

Season 4 Game 5 – Eredivisie, Den Bosch

When van Diermen put Den Bosch I feared the worst after our last away performance. This time, rather than closing up at the back and trying to limit the damage I asked the guys to push on and attack. Come the 75th minute we still hadn’t got the breakthough. I asked the guys for one last effort and sent them all forward. Wildschut was the one who, after expertly controlling with his chest, lashed home a volley from a full 20 yards out – screamer. From there we went back to our orginal game plan expecting a draw but got lucky when in injury time an innocuous enough looking Sarpong cross was inexplicably turned into his own goal by van Diermen! I could scarcely believe our luck!

Season 4 Game6 – Eredivisie, SC Camburr (a)

What a fightback! Despite us going one up almost directly from the kickoff through a Koubemba goal we found ourselves one down actually after only 12 minutes. We then began to work our way back into the game and when Dammers turned home a rebound from a Wildschut long range effort I was very happy to sit back and take the draw. Amazingly our guys had other plans and managed to win all 3 points as Wildschut this time turned scored slotting in from a very acute angle. I was delighted!

Season 4 Game 7 – Eredivise, AZ (h)

We started really well here and should have gone ahead early here but Koubemba could only hit the outside of the post when played through one on one by Wildschut in the 4th minute. We had to settle for going into break all square after having a Dammers shot cleared off the line in the 25th minute. We then had the ball in the goal but it was disallowed for offside 2 minutes after the restart. Our profligacy in front of goal would cost us as Simoes was sent of for a second bookable offence in the 49th minute making our job very difficult. From there we were content to sit and try to draw the match. We did amazingly well until the referee spotted an infringement in the box from a corner. What a joke – those sort of battles go unpunished week in week out and now he decides to blow one. Ridiculous, we should have drawn here.

Season 4 Game 8 – Dutch Cup 2nd rd, Hollandia (h)

I picked a heavily rotated squad for this one as frankly I didn’t care if we lost. Agbolosoo gave us the lead though in the 41st minute but Hollandia to their credit didn’t give up and equalised in the 59th minute. Hollandia hearts were broken in the 89th minute when an own goal gave us the win.

Season 4 Game 9 – Eredivise, Heerenveen (a)

Heerenveen taught us a lesson here. The stats and scoreline seem to suggest that we played ok but really we were never in the game. 2 nil up at halftime Heerenveen backed off in the second and the moment we threatened they stepped up a gear to snuff it out. All in all though not too disappointed with our start. 10 points from 8 games is nothing to be sneezed at.

Season 4 International Game 1 – World Cup Qualifying, Congo (a)

We went behind early to a dubious goal in the 5th minute – I am positive that was offside. We didn’t have to wait long for our reply though, Mthembu racing onto a through ball and beating the Congolese keeper one on one. It looked as though the first half would end that we but we were guilty of giving away a poor penality in the 32nd minute and although Khune guessed the right way he couldn’t keep the spot kick out.

We equalised for a 2nd time in the 69th minute. Doutie slamming home from close range at the 2nd attempt. Despite asking the guys to defend deeper we conceded a 3rd goal in stoppage time to Maboulou. Thanks to our far superior goal difference though we qualify for the next round of World Cup qualifiers.

Season 4 International Game 2 – Friendly, Morocco (a)

We experimented a lot here as I had received requests for a number of my players to only play 45 minutes – none of which bothered me as I wanted to give some fringe guys a run. The game was away so I was pleased that we had the majority of the possession and shots. We got the win courtesy of a Mokotjo right foot thunderbolt. The keeper looked to get almost his entire body behind the shot but it still deflected in off him. Good win.

Season 4 – October Roundup

Season 4 Game 10 – Eredivisie, Vitesse (a)

Amazing game. Dammers got us off to a great start with a shot that squirmed under the Vitesse keeper and then Celik finished into an open goal after some incredible work from Koubemba to chase down a lost cause and swing a cross in that evaded everyone. When Simone had a shot go in off the post just before the break we really felt like it was going to be our day. Vitesse came at us hard in the 2nd and got a goal back late on but we ran out solid 3-1 winners. Fantastic away result.

Season 4 Game 11 – Eredivisie, FC Groningen (h)

We probably gave Groningen too much respect coming into this one and went down early as we were sitting off too much. When I asked the guys to push on they responded immediately. Equalising through Loof who turned in a rebound. We looked the better side for the remainder of the half but couldn’t find the goal. The second half was much the same. We were by far the better side and had some glorious chances but didn’t make them count. Still, I’m ok with draws.

Season 4 Game 12 – Eredivisie, GA Eagles (a)

Before this one I signed on for the rest of the year at Oss. Till now I had been on a month by month contract but I figure I am now definitely looking to stay (unless something amazing comes up) so I may as well make it formal. Contract is still just for the rest of this season though. At the end of the day I know the deal at Oss, they are never going to be world beaters, at least not any time soon. With a stadium that can only seat 5,000ish we are even going to struggle to match the big guns of the Eredivisie. But if I can establish them this season in the top flight I’ll feel like my job here is done.

View attachment 263057

The guys obviously enjoyed me signing on as Keskin put us ahead after only 24 seconds!!! Simoes had us 2 up and coasting after 7 minutes with a delightful sliced finish after letting the ball roll across him and we were having a laugh after 19 minutes when a deflected Wildchut shot put us three to the good. We got a bit complacent though and let GA Eagles immediately peg one back – not good enough. Things got a bit tense when Turk scored to make our lead only one but we effectively killed the game off from there and ran out deserved winners.

Season 4 Game 13 – Dutch Cup 3rd Rd, Groningen Reserves (h)

The reserves got played in this one as again, I didn’t care in the slightest if we lost. Another good start though it must be said. Sarpong picked out a fantastic cross and Celik couldn’t miss. On the quarter hour we had a penalty after Opdam was felled. Celik stepping up and smashing into the top corner for his and our second. On 68 minutes we were awarded another penalty and Celik stepped up and smashed in the opposite top corner to last time to complete his hat-trick. I didn’t expect such a good performance from the backups and this has given me some headaches, good headaches though, concerning my team selection for the next game.

Season 4 Int Game 3 – WC Qualifying, Zambia (h)

In the African World Cup qualifying final stage there is 5 two-legged playoffs and the winner of each matchup goes straight through to the World Cup finals. We drew Zambia and it must be said this was one of the easier matchups that could have befallen us.

View attachment 263053

The first game was at home. We took the lead just before the 20 minute mark thanks to a Mthembu strike that owed a lot to poor goalkeeping from the Zambia shot stopper. Mokeke doubled our advantage shortly before the break heading in from point blank range. Zambia pulled a goal back on the hour mark thanks to a dubious penalty decision but we struck our third minutes later – Mthembu getting his second. As the game wore down I took the opportunity to cap Nkoana and Mazibuko, both of whom represent the future of South African football. Good first leg result, just a pity we conceded the away goal…

Season 4 Int Game 4 – Friendly, Australia (a)

A few days after the Zambia game we traveled to Australia to get a friendly in. We dominated this one for the most part. Australia’s equaliser only came after we had made 6 substitutions. Even with the upheaval we managed to came back and win away. A good response and experience going into our away leg against Zambia in November.

Doing very nicely at Oss, looks like a comfortable mid table finish at least! :)

Oss is going well, South Africa's looking good for the WC too!

Thanks guys - as I said, without playing 5+ seasons with them, I can't see a time where they will be truly competitive.

Whereas with someone like Anderlecht I would have immediately been competing for the league and in Europe.

Season 4 Game 14 – Eredivise, PSV (a)

Yeah we didn’t stand much chance at the Phillips Stadoin. In truth we are luck it was only 2 nil. I could have been much, much worse. Thankfully, rather than rubbing my nose in it (like I probably would do if the roles were reversed) Koeman was very complementary of me in his post match comments.

Season 4 Game 15 – Eredivisie, Willem II (h)

I think this was the first game thus far this season where we started as favourites. Despite dominating we couldn’t get the breakthrough in the first half. The second continued in the same vein until substitute Celik was talked from behind in the box. Sarpong stepped up to score from the spot. Disaster struck though minutes later when Willen equalised. Try as we might there then wasn’t enough time to grab the goal back. Terrible draw – 35 shots to 4, there is no way that shouldn’t be a win.

Season 4 Game 16 – Eredivisie, Feyenoord (h)

This one started off very even. Slowly though we amazingly began to be the better side and when Wildschut stole in and nipped an underhit backpass before rounding Vermeer in goal for Feyenoord we were dreaming of an upset. The dream was becoming more like reality shortly after when a blocked Wildshut shot fell to Sarpong who couldn’t miss from 8 years. Boetus grabbed one back for Feyenoord not long after the break which made things tense but we regrouped and when Rienstra was sent off following his second yellow we felt comfortable. A late penalty made things look a bit more comfortable than they were but I still felt we were good value for the three points.

View attachment 262191

A great result against the best team in the comp and we are now sitting 7th above teams like AZ and Ajax although Ajax could go back above us if they win their game in hand. Very proud of how we are going.

Season 4 Int Game 5 – WC Qualifying, Zambia (a)

What an absolute heartstopper! I was furious with how we played the first half and let them know at the break, We came out a changed side but Zambia fought like lions! I would have liked to qualify a lot more easily than on away goals but in the end all that matters is that we have now qualified for the World Cup Finals! What a great day!

Story of my season so far, although we have been winning them, just narrowly when it should be a thrashing!

You're doing great though!! :D

Thanks mate - to be honest Oss is surprising me. I was thinking this was going to be a battle to the end against relegation. 31 points would have been good enough for safety last season in the eredivisie so we aren't all that far from there.

Season 4 – December Roundup

Season 4 Game 17 – Eredivisie, Den Haag (a)

Poor game. We should have had a penalty and from the ensuing counter attack the referee found a red card in a perfectly legitimate all ball challenge from Loof. He had it in for us all game so it was not surprise when Den Haag’s winner came from a clearly offside goal. Some needs to see if there was any irregular betting patterns on this game because the refereeing in this one was a joke and I told the media so at the after match press conference. Could be a fine coming my way...

Season 4 Game 18 – Eredivisie, Utrecht (h)

We dominated this one from start to finish. Falkenstein was the hero today with 2 very well taken goals. The 2 goals conceded were slightly concerning but really I asked the guys to attack all game so its no surprise we were found out at the back a couple of times.

Season 4 Game 20 – Dutch Cup 4th rd, Den Haag (h)

The winter break was after this game so I gave the first team a run out to get them some fitness prior to going off. It worked a treat as man of the match Falkenstein chimed in with 2 goals but was at the heart of everything we did well. Den Haag wasn’t without their chances but we created far better ones as we marched on in the cup.

No games this month but the World Cup groups were drawn. To be honest I am chuffed with our group. Spain will of course be difficult and favourites to win the group but I don’t see any reason why we can’t turnover Norway and Japan to hopefully qualify for the knockouts in 2nd.

Some nice league results, a little more consistency and you could get Oss playing in the Europa League! As for South Africa, what a way to qualify! A good showing there could easily open the door to top tier clubs across Europe.
