Gee, we Aussies are a hard working bunch ;)

You can say that again

Only just caught up with this story, absolutely loving it. I tried a bremen once and absolutely botched it, so good idea staying with mainz.

Can I get a screenshot of David Selke? He turned into an absolute beast in one of my saves

Season 8 – Preseason/July Roundup

Transfers Roundup

First up this preseason we lined up former Manchester United Central defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah on a free contract as his Man U one expired. At only 23 he represents someone we hope will be a rock in the centre of our defence for years to come. I’m still not 100% satisfied with the quality of our defensive line but given the resources made available to us this season I am happy with this pickup.

Next came the news I’d been dreading for 6 months. When we signed Jeremie Boga his camp was insistent on a 21.5 million pound release clause. At the time I figured that would be good money for him if he played ok. Well he played amazingly and after December we found that he was no longer willing to renegotiate his contract as I wanted a new one without the release clause. Well I lie, he was, he just wanted minimum 185k a week wages whilst my board would only let me offer a maximum of 65k a week. I understand their reasons but it meant no deal would be done and the vultures began to circle as early as January. No offers were made though and I began to build hope that as we got into the Champions League things might change financially for us. In early July Lazio came though and triggered the clause and the rest was history.

In an effort to drown my sorrow I began trawling the transfer list when one name in particular jumped out at me. Marc Stendera had been made available. Could he want to come back? Even with the Boga transfer the Board had made limited funds available to me – a point I was not happy about and Real Madrid were asking more than I had remaining in budget. I managed to talk them down and the Frankfurt legend has returned. Now I don’t expect him to fill Boga’s spot out wide on the left – I had already purchased Jaoquin Correa from Roma for that role but I feel he gives us a little more than Sauter has to offer at this point in time.

I also picked up Nordin Jackers to be my backup keeper as I had been exposed when Felipe went down with an injury last season and also brought in Gael Reyes from Real, effectively to replace Kyle Naughton who had had signed with Hertha when he contract was up.

Friendlies Roundup

Bit of meh. I don’t really care much for friendlies other than trialing combinations and building fitness.

Season 8 Game 1 – Red Bull Leipzig (a)

We had this game on the horizon so I’d played the reserves against Hachioji Tigre and they hadn’t played well so in came the first team. Stendera got the start as Barkley is still laid up and Rossiter tweaked his hammy is is out a few weeks whilst Correa got the start out wide lift in place of the departed Boga. The first half was quite forgettable as we dominated proceedings but struggled to create any real chances of note.

The second half was exactly the same. Even the insertion of Kakuta and Garcia for Correa and Gedoz failed to spark the side but on the other hand RBL failed to register a shot for the entire 90 minutes. Extra time – same story. RBL somehow made it to the lottery of penalties without registering a shot for 120 minutes of football. Sauter was the one we sent up fifth to take our penalty. We have practised them in training in the past and he is usually one of our best but on this day, with every other shooter having converted prior to his, he failed to keep his nerve and skied his shot to give RBL the victory. Oh well, not the best but we were better defensively and that is something I am keen to work on this season.

**** losing Boga must hurt :( single-handedly won you so many points last season. What's Correa like?

Bogaaaaaaaaaaa! Gutting, couldn't hurt with a meet the squad or quick rundown of regens if time was available of course. Loving this still, keep it up!

First Team Roundup

As we enter the new season its time to take stock of the squad and make sure we have enough quality and depth to meet our expectations. The following is the report created for me by my assistant manager Jan Malby.

View attachment 253728

Goalkeeper

Felipe is still number one. The former Brazilian u/20 international has made some big mistakes but at only 25 has a big career ahead of him.

View attachment 253741

Defenders

From left to right we have Jung, Fosu Mensah, Puncec and Kinsombi. Jung is almost a one club man, this is now his 9th season with Franfurt after starting here before spending 3 seasons at RBL before returning. He counts as club trained for European purposes. Fosu Mensah has just joined but already looks to be our best defender. He's not the tallest lad but he is as solid as they come. Puncec should still be first choice but really he and Brendel are interchangeable at this point. Kinsombi is first choice as he is captain but really Reyes is a better player and will supplant him before too long.

Midfielders

Lucas Silva is our best DM and, given, Barkley's injury, Rossiter and Stendera are the other two CM's. Silva has been very dependable since his arrival on a free transfer from Real Madrid at the beginning of last season and Rossiter has been a bit of a jack-of-all-trades, being asked to fill in wherever necessary but he has done so with poise and will be asked to do a job until Barkley is back. Stendera's return means Sauter slips back to 2nd choice but there is no doubt Stendera is the better player. We will need to tap into his talent if we are to make waves this season.

Attackers

Correa is out left and Gediz is wide right with Iheanacho up front. Correa has been brought over from Roma will the unenviable task of filling Boga's shoes. Gedoz was really good for us last season, making the Bundesliga team of the year and we will want a little bit more from Iheanacho this season but he is young and still improving.

Second Team Roundup

View attachment 253725

Goalkeeper

Jackers was brought in on a free transfer this past offseason after we were caught out without a decent backup when Felipe went down through injury. He has the quality to not only stand in should Felipe be hurt but push him for the number 1 spot.

View attachment 253724

Defenders

Brian Vega is a young Argentinian left Back who joined on a free transfer before being loaned to River Plate last season. He has the potential to be first choice and showed glimpses whilst out on loan but will need to step up this season when given his chance. As mentioned above Brendel is an academy product pushing Puncec right now for a first team spot. Another season filling in and playing cup games and he should be ready. Insuarralde is a dependable backup, he'll likely never be any more than that at this level but that is ok. Reyes is the young right back on loan from Real. He is quality and once he is on the same page with the lads he will be first choice.

Midfielders

Luiz Henrique joined on a free transfer at the recommendation of Robinho 2 season ago. He has been out on loan at Darmstadt twice now and proven himself ready of the next step and will backup Silva this term. We are counting down the days now till Barkley is back. Probably or best player overall and will slot straight back into the first team once fit. Sauter unfortunately seems to have peaked already even though he is only 18. He will serve though as quality backup to Stendera.

Attackers

Kakuta is listed as left winger here but really he backs up both Gedoz and Correa, great club guy. Hammann is another academy product who might never be an awesome Bundesliga player but will serve as good depth. Lucas Garcia is my 2nd striker. He is dependable and has always done a job when asked to fill in for Iheanacho.

Some really quality in there!

Cheers mate - I think I've got a very solid squad. Even if I left they should be in no danger of relegation. The issue is that I'm probably 2 or 3 'World Class' players short of really challenging Bayern. With only Barkley, Stendera, Corrrea and Iheanacho (I think) on over 40k a week it is a challenge to match a team with 13 players on over 100k a week with 7 of them being on over 220k a week!!

Season 8 - August Roundup

View attachment 253641

Game 2 - Schalke (h)

What an opener. Schalke, who finished 4th last season, came to town to kick off season 21/22 and boy did we put on a show. Most of the fans had barely taken their seats when Draxler put Schalke up after only 2 minutes. He's been a thorn in our side every time we've played and today would prove no exception. The rest of the first half consisted of us chasing a goal and Schalke threatening on the counter. Shortly after the restart we took the lead when Puncec headed home from a corner. He doesn't get many goals so I was pleased to see him nod one in.

We weren't ahead long though as Draxler put Schalke back in front with a ferocious shot. When Fred curled one in to make it 3-1 I had very little hope of picking up any points today. I should trust my team though as they fought back magnificently as first Stendera scored from a penalty kick and then Garcia prodded home to bring us level. For the last 15 minutes we were probably the side most likely to score but Schalke shut up shop well an saw out the draw. Of course I would have preferred 3 points but this was a good comeback.

Game 3 - Freiburg (a)

We dominated here and should have won by a lot more than the one nil scoreline. Gedoz got on the end of a Correa cross to give us the win here. Happy with the 3 points but a little disappointed we didn't win by more.

View attachment 253641

Game 4 - Stuttgart (h)

Now that is more like it! Gedoz had us ahead within seconds but Jese hit back immediately for Stuttgart. It was end to end stuff though as Iheanacho then put us up after only 8 minutes when he slotted him from inside the box. From then on there was only ever one winner although it took us until almost the end of the match to seal the match. Much better performance from the lads and I was happy to see Iheanacho back on the scoresheet.

After this one we found out our Champions League group - talk about rough!! But it the opportunity to play teams like Manchester United at Old Trafford that is the allure of the Champions League - looking forward to it!

Game 5 - Wolfsburg (a)

And then the come down... I must admit I walked out of the Volkswagen Arena and couldn't figure out exactly what had happened. We'd been more than a match for them all game yet they had belted us! Former Chelsea man Andre Schurrle was just too good tonight.

Table Roundup

Well although it was an indifferent month we aren't doing too bad. Bayern look unbeatable again so it's likely just a race for second...

Should get your Newcastle squad and Yeti's Frankfurt squad and play each other! My Malmo team could probably give either of you a good match too!

Can i get in on this? :P

Thats a tough CL group mate, welcome to the big show!
