January Roundup

Season 3 Game 26 – Jupiler League, De Graafshap (a)

A really tight game with neither side willing to give much quarter. De Graafschap probably aren’t happy with their current league position but they have quality throughout their side so we consider this a good result away. This game was our 6th clean sheet in a row which is another club record.

Season 3 Game 27 – Jupiler League, Volendam (h)

It was revenge time here and we got off to a flyer as an own goal gave us a 4th minute lead. We dominated the remainder of the game and should have won by more but in the end we got the 3 points. Hey Volendam, you’re down in 10th on half as many points as we have – how you like me now???

Season 3 Game 28 – Dutch Cup Qtr Final, GA Eagles (a)

GA Eagles were 5th in the Eredivisie coming into this one so we knew it would be hard at their home ground. They dominated possession but we weren’t without our chances. In the end their extra quality showed as they ran out 2 nil winners.

Season 3 Game 29 – Jupiler League, RKC (a)

Another game where we had to tough out a result. RKC really gave it to us and I can only put it down to the spirit in the squad as to why we came away with 3 points here. To be honest I am starting to get the feeling that I will test the waters again this offseason and see if there are any other jobs out there as I don’t know if at my young age I could be bothered seeing out the 3-4 years it could take to make Oss a challenger in the Eredivisie if we get promoted based on games like this.

View attachment 265212

We now have a 6 point gap at the top of the table with 13 games remaining. Would dearly love to secure the title with Oss this season and look to use that to assist with finding another job at the end of the season.

Love the story! what tactics do you use lad?

Thanks mate! The tactic I use is largely based on the 4-3-3 (or 4-1-2-2-1 if you want to be fancy) Furacao tactic available here as it aligns almost perfectly with my philosophy (particularly the tweaked DM role Justified has created, so good) - http://www.fm-base.co.uk/forum/foot...7-[tactical-discussion]-plug-manage-play.html (great read from a tactics philosophy standpoint by the way!)

I tweak it bit though as I look for a different role from my striker who becomes a false 9/target man hybrid by incorporating some things from the withdrawn targetman role featured on strikerless - A More In-Depth Analysis Of The Withdrawn Targetman | Strikerless

Some very good reads there mate, you are quite the scholar! :P

February Roundup

Season 3 Game 30 – Jupiler League, MVV (h)

We welcomed MVV for this one and they belied the lowly position to give us one heck of a fright. This one was close the entire game and when they took the lead just after the hour mark I was fearing that we would be on the end of yet another sucker punch at home but Falkenstien popped up late in injury time to head home from a deep cross. In the end I wasn’t too cranky about the draw after the way this one had gone.

Season 3 Game 31 - Jupiler League, VVV (a)

We traveled to 4th placed VVV for this one and although I felt we just shaded the game we ended up losing it thanks to a Klicic goal with about 20 minutes to go. A draw probably would have been a fair result here.

Also prior to this one I finished off my National A coaching licence. I will be looking to get start acquiring my Continental licences starting next season.

Season 3 Game 32 – Jupiler League, FC Den Bosch (h)

We got off to a great start here as Emilsson raced onto a through ball and finished calmly when one on one. Once Idrissi added a 2nd in the 7th minute we looked like we were on easy street and when his second and our third went in I was able ready to mark this down as a ‘W’. Appiah had other ideas getting himself stupidly sent off and making the game so much harder than it needed to be. Thankfully the boys pulled together and defended resolutely, allowing just the one goal to run out 3 – 1 winners.

Season 3 Game 33 – Jupiler League, Sparta (a)

We came into this one surprisingly as underdogs but we quickly got on the front foot and began to assert our dominance. Once Falkenstein put us ahead after 27 minutes we were never truly troubled and ran out he game with ease. VVV beat Helmond today to re-establish our 6 point lead at the top of the table. Very happy with how things are going.

*** International Update***

After the Sparta game I got an email that I was never expecting. South Africa had approached my with a view to taking over as national team head.

View attachment 264912

When I saw their terms there was no way I could say no – 9k a week to sit halfway round the world and coach every now and then – no way I am passing that up!!

View attachment 264911

My current contract for Oss is ‘only’ 1k a week which isn’t bad money for a 25 year old but 9k – wow!

View attachment 264910

I was flown down briefly for my first press conference and all the questioning mainly centred on if I could handle the toll of two jobs. I’m a 24 year old with no girlfriend/wife/significant other I figure this is the perfect time for me to doing this. Also – anything that helps with boosting the profile is good with me.

March Roundup

Season 3 Game 34 – Jupiler League, Roda JC (h)

Despite having the majority of possession and chances we found ourselves 2 nil down at the break thanks to goals from ten Voorde and Janssen for Roda. We tried to shake things up just after the break making a triple substitution but that backfired spectacularly when Keskin was forced from the field with about 20 to go and when Appiah was sent off 10 minutes later whatever dreams we had of a comeback that remained were dashed.

Season 3 Game 35 – Jupiler League, FC Eindhoven (a)

We got ourselves back on track here against FC Eindhoven. Despite, yet again, going behind to an early goal, this time a Bandjar own goal we fought back to secure the three points thanks to goals from Emilsson and Falkenstein. A good win against a team we consider our rival.

Season 3 Game 36 – Jupiler League, Excelsior (h)

Much better from the boys as we dominated here against Excelsior. Despite always being in control we could never fully relax thanks to some average defending that allowed Excelsior to twice come back into it. Keskin was amazing today and in on practically all our good moves. He was a player I had extremely high hopes for when the season began but unfortunately he has struggled to stay in the side due to a run of minor injuries. Finger’s crossed this is start of a good finish for him.

Season 3 Game 37 – Jupiler League, Almere City (a)

And as soon as it looks like we are on a good run we have another WTF game… Really disappointing result as time and time again they created good openings after getting in behind my fullbacks – something that hasn’t been happening much at all this season. Although we looked like we had similar possession and shots to Almere the quality of their chances was way better than ours.

Season 3 Game 38 – Jupiler League, Jong Ajax (a)

Domination. I felt sorry for the Jong Ajax team here in front of their own fans. They were actually quite lucky it wasn’t approaching double digits as we had a number of efforts strike the woodwork. In fairness they do deserve some credit for holding off the onslaught for as long as they did but really had a couple of the ones we had that hit the post gone in this would have been well and truly over by half time.

Season 3 Game 39 – Jupiler League, Telstar (h)

Garbage performance from this guys here. This game and a couple other are starting to worry me that the guys are maybe not quite ready to win the title this season. It’s really disappointing as we’ve been the best side in the comp all season we just need a couple of guys to stand up and take charge and drag us across the line in games like this.

View attachment 264237

The equation is quite simple though. We are ahead by 2 points with 3 games remaining. Every game is now effectively a must win and our next game is away at 2nd placed Helmond. It is pretty much for all the bikkies.

**International Roundup**

Season 3 International Game 1 – World Cup African qualifying stage 1, Congo (h)

For my first ever international game in charge we welcomed fellow unbeaten side Congo. It will essentially be between us and them to see who goes through to the final round for African qualifying. Thankfully we started off well and took the lead when Nel slid his shot under the Congolese keeper after 19 minutes. Xulu put us 2 up just after the half hour mark and we were coasting.

We closed up shop in the second half and that allowed Congo so more possession but they were primarily restricted to long range efforts that didn’t bother us too much. When Manyame scored one on the counter attack in the 70th minute the game was over. Great result in my first game with a team that is still working out how to play my system.

Season 3 International Game 2 - World Cup African qualifying stage 1, Botswana (a)

We dominated here. Mokotjo gave us the lead really early on and from there we were able to sit and pick our spots. It took until the 87th minute for us to extend our lead but in reality they never threatened us either and we should have won by a lot, lot more. Anyway, in International level I see it as being all about results and we remained undefeated in qualifying and look set to book our place in the final stage of African World Cup qualifying soon.

April Roundup

Season 3 Game 40 – Jupiler League, Helmond Sport (a)

We started this one off really well. Keskin got us on the board in just the first minute. We had set out to play defensively and to attack on the counter and it was working to perfection when Falkenstein sent us two up in the 55th minute. As the game wore on we dropped deeper and deeper looking to protect our lead. Helmond dragged one back in the 82nd minute after a defensive mistake and then disaster struck when they equalised in the 2nd minute of injury time. We had let the opportunity to wrap up the title slip through our fingers. Devastated.

Season 3 Game 41 – Jupiler League, Jong PSV (h)

Jong PSV came into this one sitting dead last. We were expecting to win with ease here. And we absolutely should have. The amount of not good, but great, chances we had was staggering. Somehow though we contrived to only draw. Helmond had come into today 2 points back and as they won their game we would go into the final game of the season equal on points but we have a far superior goal difference.

View attachment 264222

Season 3 Game 42 – Jupiler League, FC Emmen (a)

We visited Emmen for the final game of the season. They were playing for their spot in the playoff so we knew it would be tough. Again we got a good start when Falkenstien smashed home a volley to give us the lead after 12 minutes. Pedro equalised for Emmen with a free kick that should not have even troubled Appels but somehow found its way through his hands…

When Wildschut pounced on a rebound first in the 74th minute we looked like we were sure to run out champions but a blatantly offside goal to Weghorst was somehow allowed and Emmen were level. We charged forward for the remainder of the game but couldn’t find the breakthrough. At the final whistle we were devastated, thinking we thrown away our chance to win the Jupiler League. Slowly though a rumble started to come from our away fans, new was beginning to filter though that Helmond had lost to Almere City! We were champions!!! Thank you Almere City!!!!

The fans and the Board were very happy with our achievements! So they **** well should be, the preseason media prediction was for us to finish 3rd last in 18th and I had guided them to victory!

The Board has been badgering me to sit down and discuss a new contract since the new year but I wont be signing anything until the absolute last minute as I want to see if any job offers come my way.

Oh my! You almost did what Dundalk did to me back Ireland, almost gifting Helmond Sport the title (but I actually managed to win the title unluke Helmond)! So lucky they decided to slip up. Managing in the Eredivisie would be a great chance for you and could open up possibilities at the likes of Ajax, PSV.. and then even smaller, but decent clubs from Ligue 1 and across Europe!

I'm still a bit undecided what to do next season.
With Oss it will be a crazy challenge just to avoid relegation. I'm currently playing through the offseason and, because I didn't get the job, it wont be in my update but I applied for and got the interview stage for the Anderlecht job that opened up. Tielemans, Defour and Mitrovic all still there too so it would have been great fun but alas, it wasn't to be.

Should another opportunity like that come up though I might try for it otherwise I will probably play the next season at Oss.

Great job mate, going to be a big job keeping them up! Assuming you don't move on of course.
