2015 Toronto FC Review

View attachment 198213

Now that the MLS Season is over, we will review the season that Toronto FC had. Predicted to finished 3rd in the Eastern Conference and 5th in the Support Shield, Toronto FC surpass everything that we said this year. From the announcement of the new manager to the revamp of the roster, Toronto FC managed to go where they never been to.

Dwayne De Rosario, the Iconic figure for Toronto and the current manager, put the club to a surprising 2nd in the Eastern Conference by passing the New York Red Bulls at the last game of the season and finishing 3rd in the Supporter Shield, just 4 points behind their rivals Columbus Crew and MLS Cup winner Houston Dynamos.

Toronto FC 2015 Season Result

View attachment 198207View attachment 198206

On October 10, Toronto FC tied against the New York Red Bulls 1-1 at BMO Field but it was the game that made history as Toronto FC made to the playoffs for the 1st time in the club 9 year history. The club went on to 2nd in the Eastern Conference thus skipping the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals and being placed in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Toronto FC faced DC United in the Semifinals were they defeated them 2-1 on aggregate. They went on to the Eastern Conference Finals where they met the Chicago Fire and won 4-1 on aggregate. They headed to the MLS Cup where they face the Houston Dynamos but Houston was the better team as TFC lost 4-1.

Canadian Championship

Toronto FC won their 5th Canadian Championship title after an entertaining journey where they had to complete the biggest comeback in club history. After the 2-2 draw at home to the Vancouver Whitecaps, Toronto FC saw them behind 3-0 in the 1st half. But the miracle happened where Toronto FC scored 3 2nd half goals including a last minute goal by Jackson, to eliminate Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place.

In the Finals, Toronto FC met the NASL side FC Edmonton in a trilling encounter where they won the first game 1-0 at home but lost 3-2 in Edmonton but due to away goals, Toronto FC was the champions.

Toronto FC will head to the offseason with much anticipation of the 2016 season. The next thing will be the December Wavier draft and MLS Re-Entry Draft.

December Waiver Draft and MLS Re-Entry Draft

Now that the offseason has started, the first business for the MLS clubs is the December Waiver Draft.

December Waiver Draft

The December Waiver Draft consist of players that their options to automatically extension was declined before the December 8th deadline. This is an opportunity for clubs to select the players as they rights to negotiated with that selected player first. If terms are not negotiated between the two parties, that selected player will go to the Re Entry Draft.

As always the club with the worst record, will be the first to select. The draft consist of 2 rounds. If a team passes during the 1st round, they cannot select during the 2nd round.

As Toronto FC finished as the MLS Cup runner-up, they have the 19th pick and 39th pick.

In the December Wavier Draft, Toronto FC selected Canadian defender Wandrille Lefevre from the Montreal Impacts with the 1st right to negotiated a contract with Toronto. In the 2nd round, Toronto FC did not pick anyone and passed.

After negotiation with Lefevre, both parties agreed to terms that will end in December of 2017.

View attachment 198182
View attachment 198181

Wandrille Lefevre is a defender that is good in the air and can play multiple positions if needed. Coming out from the Montreal Impact Academy, Lefevre never had the opportunity to play as he only appeared in only 29 games since 2011. With Toronto FC, he will have to compete with Heath Pearce, Glauber, and Damien Perquis but hopefully with the motivation to start fresh, he will try and break to the defensive core.

MLS Re-Entry Draft

THe MLS Re-Entry Draft is the draft for teams to pick players that did not agree to terms during the December Wavier Draft and to select player that are out of contract with their MLS team. Players selected in the draft will automatically extend their contract for one year with the same contract they had with their previous club. If players are not selected during the Re-Entry Draft, those players will be a free agent and may sign with any clubs.

Same with the December Waived Draft, clubs with the worst record will be the first to select. The draft consist of 3 rounds. Clubs that pass during during draft, will not be able to select in the later rounds.

With the 19th, 39th, and 59th, Toronto only use the 19th pick to selected the Argentine attacking midfielder Mauro Rosales from the Vancouver Whitecaps. They pass during the second round.

View attachment 198174
View attachment 198175

The veteran MLS player is a versatile player that can play multiple position in the midfield area and is a very intelligent player on the field. With Toronto FC, he can mentor Jay Chapman and he can be helpful in the AMC position.

With the draft done, the next event will be the MLS Superdraft that will happen in 2016.

MLS Superdraft

View attachment 198103

The MLS Superdraft has come and passed. The Superdraft is an annual event in which the teams from the MLS select players who have graduated from college or otherwise been signed by the league. The draft is divided into 4 rounds in which each club has a selection, the order of which is determined by the combination of the club's playoff and season, with the last placed team gets the first pick.

The draft was designed to allow the weaker clubs to develop players, making it the flagship draft of the league. But recently, it became the secondary to the club academy.

Players from from American Colleges sports system such as the NCAA are only eligible by the draft.

Since Toronto FC was the runner-up of the MLS Cup, they had the 19th and 59th pick of the Superdraft. Toronto FC trade their 39th and 79th pick in previous transaction.

With the 19th pick, Toronto FC selected American winger Jerome Daniels from Lane United FC.

View attachment 198102View attachment 198101

The winger has the potential to be a quality player in the MLS. He is a versatile player that can player multiple position and has a fair amount of speed. The only issue that he is not great defensively and needs to work on his marking. For Toronto FC, it likely that he will not make the team this year but a year or two with Toronto FC II or loaned somewhere, Daniels can potentially make the squad.

With the 59th pick, Toronto FC picked American centre back Marlon Tufton from Kitsap Pumas.

View attachment 198098View attachment 198099

The centre back has the potential to be a useful player for the club. He can also play as a fullback and has the ability to jump very high in the air as jumping is the strongest aspect in the game. Has a very sporting attitude and can play with both feet. His tackling can be better and he known to be a fairly selfish player. A couple of season with Toronto FC II or loan can help improve his game and maybe in the future Toronto FC can use him.

The next order of business will be the Preseason.

Toronto FC Preseason Review

View attachment 197135

Toronto FC will start its 2016 season with 7 friendlies matches. They will host Colombia's Deportes Tolima, Swiss Giants FC Basel, and Argentine Giant's Boca Juniors. They will also go to Colombia to face America de Cali, New York to face the New York Cosmos before heading back to Toronto where they will face their B team and their affiliate Forest City London.

View attachment 197133

Toronto FC played a great game where they dominated the game, even though Tolima managed to get two goals. Glauber scored for Toronto before Diego Macedo scored an own goal. Tesho Akindele scored late to give Toronto FC the comeback win.

View attachment 197131

Toronto FC came to Colombia with high hopes after defeating Tolima but America de Cali had other plans. Ayron del Valle scored the only goal of the game. TFC used a mixed of first team and reserves but was not enough to beat America.

View attachment 197129

Toronto FC started the game with promise after new signing Olimes Garcia scored the first goal but 18-times Swiss champion was too strong for Toronto after they scored 3 goals.

View attachment 197128

New York Cosmos scored with 15 minutes left but Toronto FC was the better team in the match. Unfortunately Toronto FC could not find the back of the net.

View attachment 197125

TFC came back to Toronto to face their B team. Toronto FC cameback with a narrow win but team did not feature the starting 11. Dwayne De Rosario was impress with both Toronto FC reserves and the Toronto FC II squad.

The game against Boca Juniors was cancelled due to Boca's Copa Libertadores match.

View attachment 197120

With the season opener coming up soon, TFC decided to use the same squad as the last game to rest the first 11 for their MLS game. Manny Aparicio scored the only goal of the game.

With the friendlies over, Toronto FC will head to the 2016 MLS season with the season opener against Philadelphia Union at the PPL Park.

Player Transfers

Toronto FC made many acquisition and subtractions during the offseason.

In

View attachment 197111

The main additions of the team was Ned Grabavoy, Olmes Garcia, and promising youth player Daniel Sasso.

Ned Grabavoy

View attachment 197104View attachment 197102

Ned Grabavoy, who last played for New York City FC, is a MLS veteren that knows the league very well. The midfielder is good player for the MLS that can handle himself with a professional manner, is very skilled and can use both feet. With his role with the team, he will be a team leader along with Michael Bradley and can hopefully mentor the young midfielders such as Manny Aparicio and Marky Delgado.

Olmes Garcia

View attachment 197094View attachment 197092

Olmes Garcia, who played for Real Salt Lake, is a stirker that has high acceleration. The speedy striker has a balanced and normal personality and can play in multiple postions. Garcia was signed for Toronto after last season international call up where Tesho Akindele, Jozy Altidore and Jordan Hamilton were consistently getting called, so Garcia is the 4th option stirker that fill up the hole if any of the strikers are unavailable to play.

Daniel Sasso

View attachment 197081View attachment 197079

Daniel Sasso was signed from the Toronto FC Academy at the beginning of the year. The promising winger has the potential to become a key member for Toronto FC. He possess a great amount of speed and is dependable for set piece. He is a ambitious player that is always looking for the win. He will be behind Sebastian Giovinco and Jonny Steele but have a couple of appearances this season.

Other addition to the squad was Mauro Rosales and Wandrille Lefevre both from Wavier Draft, Marlon Tufton and Jerome Daniels from the SuperDrafts, Pablo from Free Transfer and Jon Goldhar and Mark Bilic from Toronto FC Academy.

Out

View attachment 197067

Three Key losses for he club was Collen Warner, Benoit Cheyrou and Chris Konopka.

Collen Warner

View attachment 197065

Collen Warner was an important part for Toronto midfield. Warner was acquired from Montreal in 2014, he was a fairly athletic player that was also very agile. After the rise of Marky Delgado, Warner was dropped to a subbed role just behind Benoit Cheyrou. So sell him to Angers SCO from the French league was the best choice for both parties.

Benoit Cheyrou

View attachment 197050

Benoit Cheyrou was signed to Toronto FC in the begin of 2015 as a veteran presence for the team. But as with Collen Warner, Cheyrou was beaten by the in form Marky Delgado. With rumors that he wanted to leave the team of 1st choice opportunities, he was sold to the Portuguese side Pacos de Ferreira. The Frenchman was a good team player that enjoyed big matches and was fairly consistent performer.

Chris Konopka

View attachment 197040

Chris Konopka was the unfortunate keeper that had not had a contract extended with Toronto FC and even with the Waiver Draft, he was not selected and now is a free agent. With the upcoming goalkeeper duo in Alex Bono and Quillan Roberts, Konopka had no place with Toronto FC in 2016. The keeper was a great one on one situation.

Other subtractions were Clement Simonin to Paris FC, Pablo, Jerome Daniels, Eriq Zavaleta, Chris Mannella, David Tapia, Marlon Tufton, Ismael Sanchez, Jon Goldhar, and Mark Bilic on loan and Nick Hagglund on free transfer.

MLS Resignation and MLS March Wavier Draft

View attachment 196828

The 2016 MLS Squad Registration has passed. Each club had to pick up to 28 players to register so those players can be allowed to play during the MLS season. This registration does not include the CONCACAF Champions League, Canadian Championship, and Lamar Hunt U.S Open Cup.

Players that were not registered for the MLS, will be placed in the March Wavier Draft. Clubs cannot pick the players that they waived. Players that were not selected in the Wavier Draft will be released on free transfer and can sign with any team.

The 28 player roster that Toronto FC register was:

Goalkeeper: Joseph Bendik, Quillan Roberts, and Alex Bono

Defenders: Mark Bloom, Justin Morrow, Josh Williams, Joseph White, Ashtone Morgan, Heath Pearce, Glauber, Damien Perquis, and Ahmed Kantari

Midfielders: Wandrille Lefevre, Jackson, Ned Grabavoy, Michael Bradley, Mauro Rosale, Marky Delgado, Manny Aparicio, Jonathan Osorio, Jay Chapman, Jonny Steele, Daniel Sasso, and Sebastian Giovinco

Strikers: Jordan Hamilton, Tesho Akindele, Jozy Altidore, and Olmes Garcia

During the March Wavier Draft, Toronto FC decided not to selected anyone in the draft as they though none of the player were going to improve the team.

View attachment 196813

Is this the year that Toronto FC will be crowned the MLS Cup Champion? With Toronto coming so close to the cup before losing to the Houston Dynamos. The Overview

The key thing that Toronto FC will need to during the season is to be consistent. Last Season, TFC were either in form for a good stretch or having trouble scoring for a couple of games. With the addition of Mauro Rosales and Ned Grabavoy, Toronto FC can finally have an MLS veteran presence that can help the club with the big games. Mauro Rosales will help Jay Chapman by mentoring him and Ned Grabavoy will help Michael Bradley with the midfield role.

Key Players

Michael Bradley

View attachment 196808

The USA Player of the Year was a key factor in Toronto FC run to the MLS Cup last season. As captain for the 1st time for the club, he ended the season with a 7.37 rating and with 3 goals and 4 assist. Now for this season, Michael Bradley will have some support help with Grabavoy and Rosales helping lead the team. Bradley will still have Giovinco and Osorio help in the attack, so Bradley can solely focus on the midfield.

Sebastian Giovinco

View attachment 196807

The Italian had an amazing season during his 1st season in the MLS with 8 appearance in the MLS Team of the Week and being runner up in both MLS MVP award and MLS Newcomer of the Year while winning Toronto FC Supporters' Player of the Year. He ended with 20 goals and 12 assist with a 7.46 rating. This season, all eyes will be at him as Toronto FC will depend on him to score goals. With help from Osorio and Bradley, Giovinco will have the support to achieve that goal.

Jonathan Osorio

View attachment 196806

Jonathan Osorio had a breakthrough season last year after appearing in 7 MLS Team of the Week, being MLS Player of the Week in July, named in MLS Best XI and finishing 3rd in the MLS MVP Award. He finished with 19 goals and 11 assist with 7.41 rating. This season, the manager will want more from Osorio especially with the signing of Rosales that can help him improve.

Board Expectation

View attachment 196805

The Board expects the team to win the MLS Cup after their run to the finals last season.

View attachment 196804

With the expectation to winning the MLS Cup, the Borad wants the club to finish 1st overall in the Supporter Shield (Overall Standing)

View attachment 196803

The Board will want the club to defend their title in the Canadian Championship.

View attachment 196802

The board feels that this isn't important but the club will want to get their revenge on Columbus Crew.

The CONCACAF Champions League will start somewhere in July or August and the board will add the objective later.

MLS Fixtures

View attachment 196801View attachment 196800

As with last year, Toronto FC will end their season with 5 straight home games and 7 homes games in 9 matches. Toronto FC will start their season in Philadelphia as they face the Philadelphia Unions before hosting their Season home opener against the New York Red Bulls.

MLS Prediction

Toronto FC will win the entire thing. That's it. The only thing now is Toronto FC needs to be healthy throughout the season if they want to win.

Glauber almost cost us the game today with a terrible tackle that led to the straight red card. Sebastian Giovinco missed a penalty today and Mauro Rosales scored his first goal of the club. I must said it was great to leave the game with a point.

Glauber got the straight red card after a two legged tackle on Sebastien Le Toux. Mauro Rosales scored his first goal of season new club with an incisive finish from 14 metres. Four minute later, Le Toux tied the game with a well timed finish from close range.

Toronto will go back to BMO Field as they host the New York Red Bulls

David Villa scored the first goal of the game after a close range effort that was timed well. Damien Perquis tied the game with a powerful close range header. Jackson gave Toronto FC the lead after a good header from just inside the six yard box. Sebastian Giovinco scored by a penalty after Andrea Pirlo gave it away. We were in a hole before the match even start with multiple players of ours were in international duty and we were undermanned. But it was no excuse how we played as even with a man advantage, we were poor from the beginning.

Kelyn Rowe scored the first goal of the game with a fierce shot. Lee Nguyen doubled the lead with a real poacher's effort from 11 metres. Jermaine Jones was ejected after receiving his 2nd yellow card of he game.

Toronto FC will come back home as they host the Columbus Crew.
