Do they deserve the money they get? **** no.

At least I know there's 4 delusional people on this forum.

How in the world are footballers wages fair?!

if you think there so overpaid, don't go to watch them, or even watch football on the telly. the money clubs earn pays for the wages, so for a football fan to call wages unfair is a little dilusional if im honest.

The free market dictates everything in football. It's a business, like it or not fans are just a case of extreme brand loyalty. A wage cap won't work in the slightest, other countries will just allow the money to flow to them, and our league quality will become vastly inferior. Elite clubs can turn over tens of millions in a year, and like any business, a large share of that goes to employee wages. Hypothetically, if you were the sole employee of an employer who made £1m profit in a year. Would you be happy if he paid you £20k a year? No. You'd demand more or leave the company. Footballers will do the same, except unlike my hypothetical situation, the elite players are irreplaceable.

The basic demand/supply curves for footballers:

As you can see, as soon as demand rises slightly the price (wage) for those players rises exponentially.

It's easy for us to criticise, but if you were a top player that is contributing a large part to making football a multi-billion business, then you would be demanding a large chunk of that, and you certainly wouldn't be refusing any pay rises.

I love people who say "they'd just play for love of the game" most footballers love the game, it's the reason they discovered their talent and harnessed it. When you get to play the sport you love, and get paid millions for it? That's just very lucky.

football is not a sport it is a religon, would you moan about priests or vicars being over paid, no so if you really care about the beutiful game then you should care more about on the pitch than off the pitch. Anyway eitheway it wont affect any of you in anyway.

No, I do not think footballers are overpaid... They are very talented and skilful and their bodies take repeated physical damage and long-term injuries are very common. Also it is worth noting their careers only last between the ages of 18-40 max! I think £200k p/w is a lot of money, but if the clubs are getting the money in, it should be paid out to the people bringing in the money which ultimately is the players. I like to see footballers doing community/charity work too, especially when they earn such good money, it's good to see them repaying those who pay their salaries.

they do a lot of charity, but its not "news" so it goes unreported

There's only one pope, look how much he's worth. See, demand and supply even owns religion.

The world of sport is just completly messed up at the moment. Just look at the NFL, Kickers earning in excess of 5 million a year for kicking a ball maybe 3-4 times a game. It's disgraceful

Okay, forgive me for multiquoting.

look at it this way, if you was a football player on 150k a week and they said they are cutting your wages down to 100k. would you be happy? no

If you were a kid in Togo starving to death and realised that your "hero" Adebayor earns enough in a year to feed your entire family and close friends for the rest of their lives, would you be happy?

Why ? Cuz diamonds are rare.

Diamonds are Forever!

That is shallow. Anyone that chooses to defend their country is a hero. If you think that they volunteer to be classed as heroes, you are stupider than your comment suggests.

Armed Forces>Any other 'heroes'

Do not generalise. I live in Argentina, and most of us Argies don't really like the military. We've a history of coups, country wrecking, torture, kidnapping and murder tied to the concept of 'soldier'. Of course, a - very - small amount of those who sign up for the armed forces here have a true sense of duty, but most of them are ***** hoping to live off the state and carry a gun around.

1) 180k

2) 90k of that pays for schools, road, healthcare. he will contribute more in a week than your family would in a year

He'll also earn more in a year than a factory worker will earn in his life, and he's just kicking a ball around. No matter how many overhead kicks he scores against man city, he's still overpaid, as is almost every footballer.

yeah they get paid god knows how much lol. But most of it goes towards the cost of health care. Unlike here, it aint free

And, no disrespect. how easy is it to become a factory worker? And then how many people are there in the world with Rooney's talent? Refer to the diagram I posted in the last page.

Yes, but what can you do about it? The game is becoming more and more of a business, and players are becoming more commercialised. Examples? Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi. Clinical ones. Used to be David Beckham, but probably is in the United States.

I would love for them to cut the wages down, and give some to the people serving on the frontlines of Iraq and Afghanistan, but alas ..

Are you serious?
Would you rather pay people money to kill other people than to play a sport?

fact is we're always going to have wars, simple as. through fear, or just wanting to scare someone into submission-human nature unfortunately. Best not go back to the war thing though and just to keep OT before arguments break out

Bit harsh man I don't agree with the war but I know they're not there to kill but to defend and fight for freedom you make it sound like they want to kill people

I'm talking about Premier League footballers and I don't pay to watch them, I pay to watch County and they're not over paid.

And what do you mean I'm delusional if I think that? Do you think they're fair?

Plus if you do think that, then you must think 75% of people who commented on here are delusional.

you seem to have ignored a) what a lot of people have said and b) how the world works in terms of market forces

50% tax - earners over 150k

40% tax earners 35k- 150k

They produce money for public services, money which would not even exist or would remain in business/peoples pockets.
