THE VILLA BLOG
2020/2021 - Season Preview
Last season saw huge amounts of success at Villa Park, and the next season could be a real turning point for the club. What do we know heading into the new season? And what issues might the club face?
What we know...
Well, the board have decided to expand the stadium by another 12,000 seats. Expanding Villa Park to near 55,000 seats would give us the 6th biggest stadium in the league, which shows just how much progress this club is making. However, it does mean a move to Coventry and sharing the Ricoh Arena for the upcoming season. In the long run this should pay off.
We know Clark will be absent for the first few games of the season. This is both a positive and a negative. The reason we should look positively on this decision is that the Brazilian FA have headhunted our manager to lead their Olympic side this summer. How many clubs can say that their foreign manager has been recruited by one of the biggest footballing nations to lead them into a major international tournament? Not many. Yes, it will mean that Rudy Heylen will lead the team for the opening games of the season, but we find it hard to believe he won't have notes from Clark, and he would struggle with the squad at his disposal.
Confirmed Deals
So far the club have confirmed four major deals, and all of them outgoing. Sergi Samper, Willian, Sam Byram and Michy Batshuayi have all left the club. The future of Timo Horn remains in the balance, and Moussa Dembélé, Calum Chambers, Emanuel Mammana, Henri Lansbury and Abdelhak Nouri are all being heavily linked with moves away.
The reality is whilst the confirmed deals do leave the squad a little bare, they are great deals for the club. Sam Byram spent two years with us, and failed to nail down a first team spot. He cost the club £6.25m, and left for £10m. A profit of just under £4m, and £10m for your second choice right back? That's good business. Samper was arguably the fourth choice midfielder at the club, and made 23 appearances in all competitions last season. His chances were limited thanks to the emergence of Franjo Cirjak and Eivind Ruud. He joined for £10m, and left for just under £17m. His departure has seen a massive profit for a bit part player, and more opportunities for younger players is a great deal for everybody. Batshuayi joined Villa from Napoli for £9m, made 63 appearances for the club, scoring 26 goals before the signing of Mauro Icardi limited his game time. He joins Newcastle for £10m, which combined with the £2.5m loan fee received, means the club have made a reasonable profit off a player with limited game time is another great deal for the club. This means we have made nearly £37m from three squad players, which is great business in anyone's books. Throw in the £20.5m deal for Willian, who will be 32 on his next birthday, and who joined the club on a free transfer, means Clark has worked incredibly well in the market so far.
Horn appears desperate to move, but sources at the club insist he won't move unless a team meets his valuation, and the same can be said for Mammana. Clark has informed the media that, whilst every player does have a sale value, he will not be bullied into selling any player he does not want to, or a player whose value is not matched.
Incoming Deals
Clark has announced that fans should not expect many players to be bought in this window. He has maintained his vision for Aston Villa is to produce and promote talented young players from within the club, and after the recent success of the Young Villains, we could see the first batch of young guns to be promoted. Easah Suliman has proven his Premier League ability after two successive loans with Wolves earned him a place in Ronald Koeman's England squad for the recent European Championships, and looks likely to be promoted. Jasper van de Kamp also looks set to replace Sam Byram as the second choice fullback. Conrad Gempf had a successful loan with Crystal Palace, where he was named Fan's Player of the Year, and could be moved into the first team squad, alongside Sergio Rodríguez. The club will be eager to sort out loans for a number of young players, and give them the opportunities to prove themselves on a larger platform, and we could see the promotion of Jorge Ortega or Goran Cvetkovic should a move for Dembélé materialise.
The future does look bright at Villa, despite the clouds currently hovering over the club. We have faith in the vision of the manager, the board, and the coaching team.
How do you manage at the olympics? Never knew you could

Afaik you can get offered to manage a national team while at a club and you just manage both at the same time.
The Olympics happen every 4 years (2016, 2020, 2024 etc). You have to keep an eye open (subscribe to the Olympics themselves), wait for the draw at the end of the season, and then go to the job centre and nations needing an Under-23 manager will/should be there. Apply and see what happens!
