New Year - Three up for Villa.
Welcoming in 2020 the Villa way.
1st January 2020

After an impressive start the the season, which has seen the club finish top of their Champions League group and finish the calendar year in third place in the league, Villa fans across the glob will be looking at what 2020 has in store for us.

The first thing we need to do is welcome the newest additions to the Aston Villa family. The first confirmed deal for the window is the signing of Eivin Ruud for FC Barcelona. The Norwegian midfielder, who spent the first six months on loan with the club, joins for a fee of £2.1m.

The second signing we are delighted to announce is the acquisition of Mapoho Mosola from South African side Kaizer Chiefs. The 18 year old striker made 7 appearances for his boyhood club, and is capped at Under-23 level for the Bafana Bafana.

The third signing we are delighted to formally announce is the signing of highly rated Swedish midfielder Jonas Martinsson. The attacking midfielder, who joins the club for a fee in the region of £400k from IF Elfsborg, was courted by a number of big European clubs before agreeing to join the Villains on a long-term deal.

The club are also delighted to announce that Australian fullback Anthony Smith, who joined the club on a free transfer, has been granted a British work permit. The young left back has spent the first half of this campaign on loan at Jonkopings in Sweden, making 7 appearances in the Allsvenskan.

With massive fixtures against AS Monaco, Liverpool in the FA Cup, and a number of vital league matches on the horizon, 2020 is shaping up to be a big year for Aston Villa.

Youth Spotlight - January

Next up in our monthly review of the Young Villains features a defensive rock, and a midfield wizard. Currently, the Young Villains have won 18 of their 19 league games this season, scoring 85 goals along the way, and conceding just 13.

Who's up next?

It cannot be denied that goals win games. With that in mind, let's look at someone who takes great pride in winning games by preventing goals. Karel Svoboda is an 18 year-old Czech Republic defender, who is a second year scholar at Villa, having joined from Viktoria Plzeň in 2018. An accomplished central defender, who poses an incredible aerial threat, impressed whilst on loan with Baník Ostrava, having made his professional debut for Plzeň in the 2017/18 season, aged just 16 years-old. His performances drew interest from larger clubs, and Villa swooped in to add the talented young defender to their ranks. The Děčín-born defender has made 22 Under-21 appearances for his country, and early in the season, made his full debut for the Czech Republic, starting in defence in a 2-1 victory over Portugal in their European Championships qualifier.

The second in the Young Villain's Czech contingent is a talented left winger, who is in his third season with Villa. Daniel Janda, who joined Villa from Sparta Prague in 2017. He's in the middle of a breakout season for the Young Villains, and has featured in a huge number of games so far this season. He's appeared in 5 games for the Under-21 side, and 23 for the Under-18s. He's helped the teams cause with 19 goals and 12 assists across all competitions. The Prague native, who has made 3 cup appearances for the Villa first team, provides incredible pace down the left flank, and has a great left foot on him. He averages around 4 attempted dribbles per game, averaging near 9 miles per game.

[h=1]The Villa Blog[/h][h=2]@AVFCBlog[/h]Looks like the Sané loan will be cancelled. Club attempted to sign him, but apparently he wanted nearly £10m signing bonus, and £170k a week! Club refused to be held ransom. #NotPlayingAround

[h=1]The Villa Blog[/h][h=2]@AVFCBlog[/h]Mammana not featured recently. Fallen out with manager over move to @ManUtd. Bright future at the club, but not happy about blocked move. Bid for Willian from @FCBarcelona rejected. ITK says bid was "unacceptable". Club looking for more than £15m bid.

Enjoying this story mate building very good team my villa save is going well too just agreed to sign alonso for 1mill in 4th season

Creative players change games, and a solid and versatile spine is essential in the modern game. We take a look at two central players who offer those qualities in the middle of the park.

Who's up next?

A first year scholar with the club, Dawid Mrozik is a Polish midfielder who has plenty of potential. Capped at Under-19 level for his national side, the 17 year-old joined Villa from his hometown side Olimpia Grudziądz after being spotted by the Villa scouting team. Since joining the squad, Mrozik has shown glimpses of the potential that lead to the signing of the young Pole. He has chipped in with 13 assists for the Young Villains, making 24 appearances in all competitions. The young midfielder has promise, but has plenty of work to do before he is ready for the first team, and will have to show dedication and a solid work ethic if he is to live up to his potential.

Another first year scholar has made his mark within the youth team, and will look to continue improving and impressing. Barry Martin, who was spotted in a pre-season friendly playing for Glentoran, has made 17 appearances for the Young Villains since joining, netting 4 goals and 5 assists across the course of the season so far. Since joining Villa, the 17 year-old has made his debut for the Northern Ireland Under-21 side.

Games are won and lost in minutes, and sometimes teams need players who are able to create chances from nothing.
Villa were lucky enough to secure the signing of two talented Dutch wingers in the summer, and these first year scholars have shown fantastic potential since joining the ranks of the Young Villains.

Who's up next?

First up is a talented left winger Mitchell de Jong. The Dutch Under-19 international joined Villa from Carpi in Italy, having joined the Italian side in 2015. Regarded as an intelligent and talented prospect, the wide man has made 20 appearances for the various Young Villain sides, aiding the side with 7 goals and 4 assists. The young player, who is able to speak five different languages, has a bright future ahead of him, and with the right focus and training, could turn into a fantastic winger in the future.

Henri van Stokkom joined Villa from the famed academy at Ajax. The 18 year-old right winger has made a significant impression in his first season in England, appearing in 24 games for the Young Villain sides, scoring 12 goals and chipping in with 18 assists. Blessed with great pace and good technical attributes, van Stokkom has all the qualities to succeed at the highest level. The Under-19 international has formed a formidable partnership with his fellow compatriot Mitchell de Jong for the Oranje Under-19s, and could be a future Villain superstar.

Youth Spotlight - April

There are no jokes in this months Youth Spotlight, as we take a lot at how two more Young Villains are coping with the pressure and rigours of football at Aston Villa.

Who's up next?

Strength in depth is key to the success of any team, even for a youth team. Luzzana born Massimo Vingo is a first year scholar, and has played understudy to Andy Bühlbecker this season, and has impressed in the few appearances he has made. However, with the German shot stopper nearing 19, Vingo could find himself the first choice for the Young Villains next season. Having joined from Atalanta, the 17 year-old is an Italian youth international is blessed with great reflexes and an aerial presence beyond his years. The pressure will be on the Italian goalkeeper next year, as he will look to follow the same path as his German counterpart.

Rugby born Josh Bennett is a second year scholar, having made his way through the academy at Aston Villa. The talented young midfielder, who is blessed with a great first touch and able to carve open a defence thanks to his phenomenal passing ability. Despite being just 17 years old, the midfielder has already made his senior debut as a substitute in the Capital One Cup. Bennett has made 17 appearances for the Young Villains this season, chipping in with one goal and on assist. The future is bright for this young man, with the board having high hopes that he can follow in the footsteps of other Villa academy graduates like Gareth Barry and Jack Grealish.
