FINAL SCORE: Newcastle United 4-1 Leeds

Leeds came as close as ever although Damion Giddens made a terrible mistake and failed his teammates with a bad foul that had him sent off. The Magpies looked unable to come back in the game before that but it turned in a walk in the park after the red card. In all fairness Ahn Jung-Ho's goal was the only shot on target and perhaps Leeds should have tried a little harder. Newcastle will certainly throw celebrations with completing a glorious quadruple of trophies this season by adding the Capital One Cup to the English Community Shield, the European Super Cup and the Club World Championship - and they could add further glory! Now let's take a look at match stats and individual performances:

Tony Cascarino Commentary
Last updated at 8:33PM, February 27 2028

A long known fact has been confirmed today with Chelsea's loss away to Blackburn - the Blues will not make it to top four again. For the second season in a row. The more skeptic fans will point out that period coincides with Marcelino's reign at the club. Those who sympathize with the manager will suggest the competition has become much fiercer lately and Europa League qualification is reasonable success so early in his career.

View attachment 357492
The summit of Chelsea hopes next season again

Truth is Marcelino has been brought to cut the gap to the champions and it has not happened. Even more - the distance from Champions League football is frightening. If Leeds win their game in hand they will be 11 points away from the Blues. In the previous campaign this gap was 6 points. The facts speak loud and clear: Chelsea are hardly making any progress, on the contrary, they are losing ground.

View attachment 357493
Marcelino must deliver next time

Of course two seasons are not enough to make a final judgment about Marcelino's reign at the club. Unless he completely loses the plot in the final 11 league games he will most likely keep his position. Although next season will be all about results. If Chelsea don't show persistent progress he will find it hard to keep fans on his side.

Owner looking to sell Liverpool!

Liverpool are believed to be the subject of a takeover bid, according to a report from the Daily Mirror. Liverpool's chairman Thomas Werner is looking to sell the club and a local businessman could be in line to take over in the near future.

Chairman Werner looking to sell

Werner has spoken about his disappointment with failure to bring silverware to Anfield despite heavy investments in recent years. He is now looking to cut his losses and move on. Thomas is unlikely to remain in football if the takeover is completed.

Potential buyer still anonymous

The identity of the mysterious local businessman remains confidential. Sources close to the club have hinted he is a long term fan although failed to identify if he has been at Liverpool at any capacity before. The fans are worried if the potential new regime will maintain the spending policy which is still needed to catch up with the other title contenders. The club are currently sixth in the Premier League ten points away from Champions League qualification.

Premier League Table

The Contenders:

Newcastle (1st; 78pts; +102) - the Magpies make no mistakes this month and steal the march from Rovers. The title is theirs to lose now.
Player of the month: Pape Diédhiou (DC/DM) 8.74
0 Current first team injuries.

Blackburn
(2nd; 78pts; +46) - Rovers make it 24 league wins in a row although Newcastle matched their form this month and got ahead of them because of their superior goal difference.
Player of the month: Savio Barreto (DC) 8.22
0 Current first team injuries.

Manchester United (3rd; 66pts; +41) - the Red Devils enjoy a perfect month with four out of four and still have the advantage over Leeds for third place.
Player of the month: Almamy Traoré (AMR/ST) 8.00
2 Current first team injuries:
Raymond McFadden (DRL/WBR) - 2-3 months (torn hamstring)
Milan Milovanovic (M/AMC) - 2-3 weeks (sprained ankle)

Leeds (4th; 62pts; +36) - a home loss to Newcastle is the only mistake Leeds make this month although it means they face an uphill challenge to catch Manchester United now. It is good enough to extend the gap ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool though and they are set for more Champions League football next season.
Player of the month: Ahn Jung-Ho (ST) 8.28
1 Current first team injury:
Konstantin Chumak (MC) - 3-4 weeks (fractured wrist)

Chelsea (5th; 54pts; +26) - the Blues take only 4 points this month and their flawless January has been in vain. Top four is now mission impossible.
Player of the month: Tajuddin Hossain (M/AML) 7.86
2 Current first team injuries:
Slobodan Magazin (M/AMC) - 7-8 weeks (torn hamstring)
Leonardo Martinez (DC) - 8-10 days (damaged elbow)

Liverpool (6th; 52pts; +15) - the Reds manage just two wins from four games this month and heavy defeats at the hands of Newcastle and Manchester United prevent them from taking advantage of Chelsea's abysmal form.
Player of the month: Igor Gajic (DM/MC) 7.86
3 Current first team injuries:
Viv Bevan (DL) - 2-3 months (torn hamstring)
Eirik Mork (MC/ST) - 5-6 weeks (lower back stress fracture)
Jason Kenworthy (GK) - 4-5 weeks (torn groin muscle)

Other teams to watch:

Manchester City (7th) - the Citizens are nowhere near the title contenders now and their hopes of return to Europe are reliant on an unlikely FA Cup final between Newcastle and Chelsea or Liverpool - if either of the latter makes it in the top four.

Arsenal (9th) - the Gunners could only achieve European football if they win Europa League or trigger the unlikely scenario described for Manchester City if they can beat the Citizens and Everton to 7th.

Swansea (12th) - the Swans move even further up the charts and are now 11 points above the drop zone. They should be safe and can start planning for another season in the Premier League.

Crewe Alexandra (17th) - they climbed out of the bottom three but merely by two points.

Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa occupy the bottom three. They have the least wins in the league and completely deserve their positions in the table. There is still hope for Sunderland although survival hopes are quickly fading for Palace who are six points below the line. The Villains are doomed with just 7 points to show for 27 games.

The dark side of Hristov management - Magpies financially reliant on success

View attachment 357677
Rob Lee
Published at 7:12PM, March 5 2028

There is a common admiration for the massive success Hristov has brought to Newcastle over his reign at the club. Although a small but intelligent fraction of the fans refuse to accept all managerial decisions without question. They point out it might all be fine and dandy while the Magpies enjoy winning financially rewarding competitions like the Premier League and the Champions League - but given Blackburn's recent rise what happens if they don't?

View attachment 357679
Magpies handle massive wage-bill

Hristov has undoubtedly assembled the best squad Newcastle has ever seen. Perhaps the best squad the world has seen. Although it comes at a cost. The club has the largest average player wage in the league (joint with Leeds on £145,000) and perhaps the largest wage bill at £3.7m per week. Of course continuing success has raised revenue through various sponsorship deals and Saint James' Park has been redesigned to accommodate 96,000 fans but it income is still far from the level of expenses and Hristov has been looking to generate extra funds by loaning out a number of top players. And all this only helps keep the boat afloat if and when the club receives prize money for a successful campaign both at home soil and in Europe.

View attachment 357680
Multiple deals to be handled in the summer

A large number of first team players (nine overall to be specific) will have one year left on their contracts in the summer prompting negotiations for new deals. It will be a massive decision for Hristov to make - another hike in wage bill may be too much for Newcastle to take and might send the Magpies on the path of financial meltdown. While the majority of fans trust the manager to the hilt, voices of reason can be heard suggesting success doesn't always justify the means.

Leeds United: repetitive success or becoming stagnant - Matteo
View attachment 357687

by Dominic Matteo
Success is a matter of perspective. Leeds had a flirt with the title fight last season only to collapse in the spring and barely hold fourth position to qualify for the Champions League. That campaign did raise some questions over how well Harry Redknapp is doing for us. After four consecutive top 4 finishes we are set to make it five this season. As a matter of fact the current league table is mirroring the final chart of the previous campaign. Is this success?

View attachment 357689
We set roots in top four

I'm not sure that's the right word. Stability feels closer. Newcastle have been virtually untouchable for over a decade although the recent rise in Blackburn's fortunes suggests there is more to fight for than merely a top four finish. And that's something Harry Redknapp hasn't managed. He always has the focus on something ongoing and eventually succeeds in delivering Champions League so the fans are usually happy in the end. The general feeling of success doesn't necessarily mean we've been successful though.

View attachment 357690
Crossroad ahead

I think Harry will keep us in top four again, despite the humiliating defeat away to Chelsea. The Blues may have defeated us comprehensively but their general form in the league is short of ours. They did inflict some damage though and we now seem unlikely to challenge Manchester United for a higher position. And if we can't beat the Devils to it, we will finish fourth for the third season running. A reasonable, stripped of emotions review of the facts would imply there is little progress in this. And lack of progress may mean we are becoming stagnant.

Newcastle announce new intake of youth players - Hristov junior joins the ranks!!!

View attachment 357736
Rob Lee
Published at 9:06PM, March 12 2028

Newcastle United Head of Youth Development Xavi has informed the Evening Chronicle a new batch of youngsters have arrived at the club's academy. The most intriguing face is manager Hristov's son - Dimitar Hristov. The youngster has been offered a straight first team contract and caused a little argument between Director of Football Andreas Brehme and Hristov, the former claiming he is a decent player and the latter convinced he will be one of the greatest stars the world has seen. Local reporters have already noticed similarities between the youngster's style and Bulgarian legend Krasimir Balakov.

View attachment 357737
Dimitar Hristov

Hristov refused to accept his son's favoured position would make it harder for the youngster to fit in the famous 2-3-1-2-2 formation. Dimitar is only comfortable at AMC and there is no need of such type of midfielder in his father's plans. Hristov did not clarify whether his son will be retrained as a striker or central midfielder.

Darren Pugh

In the meantime Xavi has picked one more youngster from this year's crop. Full-back Darren Pugh is expected to sign a contract and stay with the youth team. Darren is able to play in central defense although it is believed his chances to make it in the first team are slim.

Three minutes double strike sinks the Gunners as Rovers keep the pace
............................................................................................................
By Kevin Gallacher.................ii.iiiiiii.9:12 PM Saturday 12th March 2028 in Sport
............................................................................................................

We faced an unexpected challenge in the early kick-off Saturday game with Arsenal. The Gunners took us by surprise in the first half and deservedly had the lead at half time thanks to a Jason Jacobs strike. I was worried to see a number of our players approach the game in a relaxed way, thinking they would win it by just appearing in it.

View attachment 357740
Gunners punish our complacency in the first

Whatever Neil Lennon told the lads at half time it worked. The team was revitalized and returned to the exciting, aggressive football which brought us so many wins over the past two seasons. We took much more possession and turned the game around. Goals weren't late and we realized a quick comeback in the space of three minutes - Ekrem Tayfur equalized in the 70th and Boccaccini got the winner in the 72nd.

View attachment 357741
Though we emerge victorious in the end

This win keeps us on par with Newcastle and we can still dream the Magpies will drop points somewhere. There are nine rounds left and the title race is wide open. It would be devastating if we lose out on goal difference but for the time being the best we can do is keep winning - a task we are well accustomed to.
