The miracle has happened! Newcastle came back from two goals down in their postponed match at Stamford Bridge but Chelsea held on for a respectable draw and put Blackburn in line for our fourth league title!

American hero haunts ex boss

It is all in our hands now. We did great in the first challenge - the home derby against Leeds. The lads showed amazing character to come back after Leeds took the lead twice in the first half. A wonder goal from veteran American winger Maldonado then sealed the win and gave us the all important edge over the Magpies in the race for the title. Ironically Maldonado was a key figure in the U.S.A. team which won the World Cup during Hristov's last spell with international football. Will he be the man to sink his old boss' hopes to bring a record 20th league title to Newcastle?

View attachment 358434
Title in sight for Rovers!

We may be clear favourites now but the race is far from over. Rovers have 99 points with 4 games left and Newcastle - 94 with 5 to play. Here are the fixtures both teams need to play until the end of the season:

Blackburn: Oxford (A), Manchester United (H), Q.P.R. (A), Liverpool (H)
Newcastle: Everton (H), Arsenal (A), Middlesbrough (H), Sunderland (H), Crystal Palace (A)

We have two contender derbies but home advantage is on our side for both of them. The London trip to Rangers is also a little tricky. Newcastle enjoy a much easier program although they need to visit Arsenal and face two North-East rivals. One thing is certain: four wins will guarantee us the right to call ourselves champions again!

The King returns on Anfield to become an emperor!

Kenny Dalglish is back at Liverpool! Again! This time - as an owner. The news have been confirmed officially by the club and previous chairman Thomas Werner. Kenny spoke about his determination to get on with the job of returning the glory days to the greatest club in the world, starting with next season.

View attachment 358545
King Kenny returns!

It is a very passionate moment for all Liverpudlians and everyone at the club is brimming with excitement about what the future hides. Dalglish avoided the topic of funds available and if he is set to rubber stamp as generous spending as his predecessor although Kenny has never been afraid to break the bank during his previous spells with us. The transfer embargo has been lifted and everything is in place for healthy summer preparation. It is yet unclear whether the manager will keep his position or Dalglish will look to install a man of his choice.

Return to glory days starts here

We will play our first official game under the new reign in Thursday as our league match this weekend was postponed. It will be a rather appropriate for the occasion mouth watering clash with FC Bayern at Anfield - Europa League semi final. It might not be long before Kenny brings another trophy in Liverpool's cabinet!

Magpies impress against Everton but title still out of reach

Would anyone have thought one draw and a single loss in the entire Premier League campaign could not be enough to win the title? It sounds impossible although with just three rounds left it may happen. The lads had a point to prove this weekend against the Toffees. They headed into the game knowing another drop of points would all but confirm Blackburn as champions. The outcome - a demolishing 5-1 win. Dong Dexin did everything within his powers to make sure he succeeds where Priestley failed last season - beating Rovers' Boccaccini to the top goalscorer award.

View attachment 358677
Dong Dexin takes the lead for this award

Dong Dexin scored four and now leads the chart. But in a peculiar turn of events this may be little comfort as time is running out to catch up with Rovers in the more important table. Blackburn have only three games left and if they win all of them, they will be out of reach whatever we do. The odds are with them as they only lost once in the league - to us, and we don't have the comfort of a direct clash.

Could we be up for the greatest upset

Our season is coming to a combined culmination with the place in the Champions League final still uncertain. We managed a strategic 2-2 draw away to Valencia in the first leg although it could have been much better. Now we have our attention divided needing results in both competitions. And we are aware even getting them might not be enough in one of them.

Tony Cascarino Commentary

Another Premier League season is approaching its end. Three rounds before the curtain comes down Chelsea are rock solid in fifth position. The Blues are eight points behind Leeds and seven above Liverpool which effectively means their campaign in the league is as good as over.

View attachment 358718
The impressive 2-2 draw with Newcastle the highlight of the season

Inconsistent autumn combined with falling apart in all the major clashes with the title contenders were shrugged off in the spring though and Chelsea enjoyed some impressive displays including a 6-1 win over Leeds and 4-3 victory against the Red Devils in March, followed by 3-0 against Liverpool and the highlight - a 2-2 draw against Newcastle this month. This suggests the squad has finally blended and grown in big games and there is a positive charge ahead of the second leg of the Europa League semi-final against Atlético Madrid. European glory would bring the right spirit for the next season and manager Marcelino is well aware of that.

View attachment 358719
High spirit could be the difference next season

There are worries the club is becoming stagnant with a second consecutive season outside the top four. In the same time Marcelino has been brought with the immediate task of changing generations and it was always expected the results might suffer. Lack of Champions League football is a hefty price to pay although it might be the right way forward if the Blues continue their impressive change of fortunes in the next campaign.

Terrific 3-0 win over Devils - two steps left for Blackburn to lift the title!

Even when Newcastle drew away to Chelsea many fans remained skeptic about our chances to beat them to the title. Mainly because of our much tougher fixtures but also because the Magpies have developed a tremendous reflex of somehow crossing the finish line first no matter the circumstances.

Exchange of favours with Red Devils puts us closer

Our game this weekend has changed the perspective. Some may suggest we exchanged favours with Manchester United after allowing them to move past us in the Champions League semi final although I believe Neil Lennon simply decided to spare some energy in the second leg considering we were trailing and throw it all in the league fixture. It worked. We won't be the champions of Europe but we are now two games away from the English crown.

View attachment 358855
Next step - Loftus Road

First of all we make a trip to Loftus Road for our last away game this season. Queens Park Rangers are a tough opponent but if we crack them we will be set for a final day battle with Liverpool at home. We have already improved on our points tally from the previous campaign and if we can add six more points it will be a legendary triumph.

Leeds United: draw with Oxford a missed chance to catch up with Red Devils - Matteo
View attachment 358859

by Dominic Matteo
Leeds suffered from end of season lack of focus. That's the only explanation for the way the lads played with a much inferior Oxford side. These are the type of games we are expected to win routinely. It is even more disappointing because we do have what to play for and motivation shouldn't be an issue. That seems to be the Achilles heel for Harry Redknapp's squad.

View attachment 358861
Poor end of season our Achilles heel

A win today would have allowed us to take full advantage of Manchester United's heavy loss to title bound Rovers and move a single point behind them with two games left. Instead we are trailing three and with a goal difference 12 goals behind theirs it will take a miracle to finish third. In the same time we missed a chance to officially confirm our top four position. Chelsea are six points behind and while they are unlikely to overtake us a defeat in our next game would put unnecessary pressure on our shoulders in the last day.

View attachment 358860
Roses derby next

It's not an impossible scenario. We face Manchester United at Old Trafford in the next round while Chelsea visit Middlesbrough - a midtable team with nothing to play for. Then we welcome Queens Park in the final round - the Red Devils travel to Oxford and Chelsea entertain Wednesday at the Bridge. It's a crossroad with a lot of unknowns for Leeds and even if it is most likely to finish fourth, there is still enough time to move both up and down the table.

Premier League Table

The Contenders:

Blackburn (1st; 105pts; +69) - Rovers simply cannot be stopped on their way to the title. Wins against Leeds and Manchester United this month allow them to take advantage over Newcastle and they are now the big favourites to be crowned the new Premier League champions.
Player of the month: Ismail Hakan Tosun (MC) 7.94
0 Current first team injuries.

Newcastle
(2nd; 100pts; +134) - the Magpies drop two points away to Chelsea and are now behind Blackburn in the title race. Even if they win their game in hand they'll need Rovers to slip in one of their final two games.
Player of the month: Pape Diédhiou (DC/DM) 8.56
1 Current first team injury:
Jim Priestley (ST) - 1-3 days (bruised rib)

Manchester
United (3rd; 85pts; +52) - the Red Devils manage 12 points this month and only lose points to Blackburn. It is still not good enough to be safe in third and they will need a result against Leeds next month.
Player of the month: Abdoul Konaté (D/WBL) 7.72
5 Current first team injuries:
Raymond McFadden (DRL/WBR) - 1-5 days (torn hamstring)
Keith Sedgemore (MC) - 2 weeks (twisted ankle)
Martyn Flint (D/WBR) - 4-7 days (groin strain)
Hidde van Dijk (DRC/WBR) - 4-5 weeks (broken collarbone)
Almamy Traoré (AMR/ST) - 12-14 days (pulled hamstring)

Leeds (4th; 82pts; +40) - a loss to Blackburn and surprise draw with Oxford mean Leeds are unable to get any closer to Manchester United in third. They still have a direct clash with the Devils but must be careful as losing it may put their Champions League credentials in doubt.
Player of the month: Phillip Foose (DC) 7.56
1 Current first team injury:
Shaun Gregory (GK) - 1-4 days (fractured arm)

Chelsea (5th; 76pts; +41) - the Blues recover from an early April loss away to Tottenham and only drop further points in the draw with Newcastle. They still have a slight chance for Champions League qualification but that would require a huge chain of events.
Player of the month: Laurent Simon (AML/ST) 7.76
0 Current first team injuries.

Liverpool (6th; 69pts; +20) - loss away to Chelsea and draw at home with Leeds stop the Reds from enjoying a perfect month. They now know they can't finish below their current position in the table although their game in hand gives them a minor chance of overtaking Chelsea should results go their way.
Player of the month: Igor Gajic (DM/MC) 7.52
3 Current first team injuries:
John Schofield (MC) - 7-8 weeks (torn hamstring)
Viv Bevan (DL) - 5-10 days (torn hamstring)
Juan Gabriel Travieso (DC) - 3-5 weeks (torn hamstring)

Other teams to watch:

Tottenham (7th) - the Spurs overtake a trio of Arsenal, Everton and Manchester City to seventh but even if they keep this position it will only bring them the joy of finishing above their London rivals. Everton have taken the final Europa League quota by making it to the FA Cup final so the fight for 7th is now irrelevant.

Manchester City (8th) - the Citizens are joint on points with Tottenham and will want to edge above them for a more respectable position in the final table.

Everton (9th) - the Toffees have lost interest in the Premier League and will now focus on their forthcoming FA Cup final.

Arsenal (10th) - the Gunners have slided down the table but have a game in hand and still have a chance to overtake Spurs.

Swansea (12th) - the Swans still hold a very respectable league position. They have realized their goal of reaching 40 points and are officially safe by a great margin.

Sunderland (17th) - the Black Cats are still joint on points with Crewe and will need at least as many points as their opponents to take advantage of their superior goal difference and survive.

Crewe Alexandra, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa occupy the bottom three. Crewe and Palace are withing touching distance of safety although the Villains need wins in both their remaining games and all three teams above them to lose. Hope dies last as they say.

It is little surprise FA Cup holders Newcastle have booked a place in yet another final of the tournament, although few would have expected Everton to make it to Wembley as well. It is mission accomplished for the Toffees with Europa League qualification already secure. They can enjoy the game and try to upset the odds without any pressure on them. In the meantime Newcastle will be looking to defend the trophy without spending too much energy as they are facing a pretty congested big games in the next couple of weeks.

Newcastle - None
Everton - Angelidis (ineligible), Ciccarelli doubtful (torn calf muscle), Mjomen doubtful (twisted ankle)

FINAL SCORE: Newcastle United 4-1 Everton

Newcastle once again showed their amazing ability to switch to another gear when it comes to a competition final and simply blew Everton out of the game with a bursting start. Mikael Lampi put another man of the match performance and his brace was pretty much the defining difference between the sides. Everton were thrown a lifeline with a goal from Isdar Umar but Lampi's strike just before half time broke them down and there was no coming back after. This win marks another glorious campaign for the Magpies as they have now completed a magnificent quintuple by adding the FA Cup to the English Community Shield, the European Super Cup, the Club World Championship and the Capital One Cup - and they could add further glory! Red Devils secure third place finish and Champions League groups next season

Gary Neville

Published at 9:01PM, May 7 2028

Martin Callaghan ensured we finish the season in style with a brace against Leeds in the direct clash for the third place. Fans at Old Trafford feared a different outcome when Walter Blasi was sent off in the first half with the score 0-0 at the time but Martin took things in his own hands and his 31st and 32nd goals of the season. The lads can now enter the last weekend without any pressure and close the season.

All eyes on CL final now

Of course this result now allows us to focus fully on the Champions League final with Newcastle. We are the underdogs in that game but Sir Alex can do miracles with extra time on the training ground. As we have already seen the Magpies are not invincible and unlike us they are facing the burden of expectations and if they lose the title to Blackburn - which seems likely - everyone will say they have failed this season.

Summer spending required

Since this will be my last article this season I think it's appropriate to cast my eyes on the pre-season as well. We will need to change our usual transfer policy and spend in the summer. Seven of our first team players are in their thirties now and while I have confidence in Ferguson's ability to get the best out of them we can't ask them to play on the same level for another full season. The bare minimum would be to bring in a goalkeeper, a central midfielder and a striker. We are on a high and we should capitalize on this while we can attract real quality.
