Fabulous and awesome story. I can't believe I just discovered this now. LOVE it. Love the MotD commentary and the Lawro v. various celebrities. Don't give up on the commentary, dude, just b/c the uploading is a pain in the Arsenal.

BTW, Gooners mid-table is exactly what I was expecting this season. So glad that reality is different than in your story ;)

Keep up the great work!

Thank you, mate. The thing with maintaining various sub-story articles is they are immensely time consuming and considering how tough it is on my machine to take FM and Opera running in the same time it makes it nearly impossible to progress the game. I'd love to keep up the articles, MotD and Lawro but the sad reality is unless I get paid to run this story there is little in it for me right now as that is how it feels like - doing hours and hours of work instead of having fun :(

Premier League Table

The Contenders:

Newcastle (1st; 58pts; +44) - the Magpies only dropped points once in the past five games to record an unbeaten spree which sees them open a gap up at the top.
Player of the month: Eder Alvarez Balanta (DLC) 8.38
0 Current first team injuries.

Manchester United
(2nd; 52pts; +29) - two recent losses see the Red Devils drop behind the league leaders but the title race is still wide open.
Player of the month: Robin van Persie (ST) 8.00
0 Current first team injuries.

Chelsea (3rd; 48pts; +19) - the Blues won three and lost just one of the last five games and sit comfortably in the top four with an outside chance to challenge for the title.
Player of the month: Frank Lampard (M/AMC) 7.52
3 Current first team injuries:
Willian (AMRLC) - 5-7 weeks (torn hamstring)
Juan Mata (AMRLC) - 2-3 weeks (damaged knee cap)
Demba Ba (AML/ST) - 5-6 weeks (torn groin muscle)

Manchester City (4th; 47pts; +21) - four wins and just one loss in last five games grants the Citizens a Champions League position in the current table with the title still a possibility, even if unlikely.
Player of the month: Joleon Lescott (DLC) 7.82
4 Current first team injuries:
Pablo Zabaleta (DRL/WBR) - 7-9 days (damaged elbow)
Fernandinho (DM/MC/AMR) - 4-10 days (sports hernia)

Stevan Jovetic (AMLC/ST) - 3 weeks (twisted ankle)

Tottenham (5th; 41pts; +20) - Spurs also maintain an excellent run of form with four wins and one loss in last five but the teams above them matched that so it's a stalemate.

1 Current first team injury:
Roberto Soldado (ST) - 2-9 days (sprained ankle)

Micah Richards (DRC) - 10-14 days (fractured cheekbone)
Santi Cazorla (AMRLC) - 9 days (virus)
Mesut Ozil (AMRLC) - 5-11 days (sports hernia)

Liverpool (19th; 15pts; -17) - the abysmal form continues for the Reds with just one point to show for the past five games and only goal difference sparing the famous Merseyside club the humiliation of sitting rock bottom of the league.
Player of the month: Joe Allen (DM/MC) 7.28
5 Current first team injuries:
Mamadou Sakho (DC) - 2-7 days (fractured arm)
Martin Kelly (DRC) - 4-9 days (fractured wrist)
Glen Johnson (DR) - 4 days (flu)
Daniel Agger (DC) - 3-4 weeks (fractured arm)
Mohamed Diame (DM/MC) - 2-3 months (knee tendonitis)

Other teams to watch:

Aston Villa (6th) - the Villains pick up 8 points in the last 5 games to remain in contention for Europe.

Fulham (7th) - the Cottagers only take 4 points in the last 5 games and need to improve if they want European football next season.

Everton, Swansea and Hull are still close to the drop zone and while the Toffees and the Swans picked up some points recently, Hull have been very poor and have to change something soon.

West Brom, Liverpool and Norwich occupy the bottom three - Norwich picked up 4 points in the past 5 games but the other two sit bottom of the recent form table and are in deep trouble.

Newcastle wrap up Loic Remy permanent deal

Free-spending manager Dimiter Hristov concluded his signing spree for the season as Newcastle finalized the transfer of French international striker Loic Remy (27) from Q.P.R. for 6.0 million pounds. Remy has been on hugely impressive form which grabbed him the January player of the month award and fired him up as the club's leading goalscorer this season. He had been on a season-long loan but Hristov decided to activate a clause that had been agreed with Q.P.R. and secure Remy early.

Remy secured permanently

It is believed Remy was initially unwilling to execute the clause and looked at Newcastle as a platform to prove his case ahead of a move to a bigger club but the Frenchman has been convinced the Magpies are in the driving seat for Champions League next season and wants to be a part of the exciting times ahead. Since this signing completely drained the transfer budget, Hristov allowed another young prospect to leave on deadline day as Newcastle officially announced the sale of midfielder Conor Newton (22) to Championship outfit Birmingham for a fee of 825k pounds. Hristov was perfectly happy with the January activity on the market:

Reporter: No fireworks this month but you still couldn't resist dipping in the market. Perhaps the only criticism you are still receiving is the continued overspending which would put the club finances at severe risk should you fail to qualify for the Champions League.
Dimiter Hristov: As a matter of fact I was only allowed to spend this month because I assured Mike Ashley we are fighting for the title and as you see we are in the driving seat. Truth is the signing of Remy makes a great deal of sense financially speaking. His market value is way higher than what we paid for him, thanks to the fixed price clause we had inserted in the initial loan deal. Should the worst happen we would be able to demand a much higher fee for him if we are forced to sell. Additionally we sat with his agent and agreed that the chance to play Champions League football is good enough for the player to lower his wage demands.
Reporter: You were a bit lucky to not get tested with bids for your top players this month but rumors are mounting some of the big guns are tracking quite a few in black and white shirts. Even if you win the league - are you comfortable you will be able to keep this team together and push on for greater honors?
Dimiter Hristov: Completely.

I have often criticized the way Hristov conducts business fiercely but must agree with his arguments behind the Remy transfer this time around. Newcastle would have needed a striker signing in the summer anyway and there aren't many available who could slot straight in the team and do better than Loic.

Loic Remy transfer verdict: 7.5/10 - excellent piece of business and money well spent.

Conor Newton transfer verdict: 5.0/10 - there really wasn't much of a chance for Conor to break in the first team and he is at an age where regular first team football becomes a must so it was probably the right decision for all parties to let him go.

We also keep tracking the transfer budget Hristov promised would be reinvested straight in the squad. The transfer fee for Loic Remy (6.0m pounds) has been deducted from the pot:

Newcastle transfer budget: 0 pounds (9.36m initial)

Twilight zone as Chelsea agree to sell Azpilicueta

Tony Cascarino Commentary
Last updated at 11:51PM, February 1 2014

It was untypical for Mourinho when the Chelsea manager came out and declared he is happy with his squad and isn't looking to add in the January transfer window. The fans were looking at deadline day as spectators enjoying the show of desperation and overpriced deals with the luxury of no emotional strings attached when news broke out Chelsea have bizarrely agreed to sell full back Cesar Azpilicueta (24) to Napoli in a 11.5 million pounds deal. The shock ripples widened with the realization the only specialist full backs left in the first team are Branislav Ivanovic and Ashley Cole.

Azpilicueta leaves for Napoli

The five times capped Spain international only spent a season and a half at Stamford Bridge and played 45 games for the club. Jose Mourinho was far from happy to sanction his transfer to Napoli but suggested it wasn't his decision:

Reporter: Fans and pundits are still in shock after the departure of Azpilicueta. Why was he sold?
Jose Mourinho: It was a sloppy piece of business from the club administration and they need to be held accountable for what happened. I can't be told on deadline day we need to raise funds to comply with the FFP rules. Cesar was the only player who attracted sufficient interest and eventually there was no time left to sign a replacement.
Reporter: Initial comments suggest with top four position all but secured and no real chance to fight for the title the club will concentrate solely on the knockout stages of the Champions League hence cashing in on Azpilicueta was a choice rather than rushed decision.
Jose Mourinho: Do you think I am happy with no cover for injuries on both flanks of defense? I am not happy at all. We'll see. Perhaps we have a new Cesar in the academy. Or a new Baines. We'll see. Now is a good time for the young boys to step up and impress me.

We will never learn why the board decided to sell Azpilicueta at such an inappropriate time and if Mourinho was truly in the blue about what was going on. Facts are Chelsea are desperately short for cover and it will inevitably affect results in months to come.

Cesar Azpilicueta transfer verdict: 1.0/10 - abysmal choice of a player to sell even if finances needed to be balanced as it leaves the first team exposed in what is a key position.

Steve Clarke has been fired by West Bromwich Albion president Jeremy Peace. With relegation looming, the West Brom board were forced to step in and make a change to try and rescue the club's desperate situation at the bottom of the standings. Clarke had been manager at West Brom since June 2012. West Brom have been disappointing in the Premier League so far this season and find themselves in 19th place having lost four of their last five games in the league.
