Tottenham Hotspur have appointed prominent fifty-year old Danish legend Michael Laudrup as their new manager. The highly respected boss was introduced to awaiting fans and journalists at White Hart Lane this morning. This is Laudrup's first role back in England since leaving Swansea in May 2014.

Laudrup's first non-playing role was as Denmark's assistant coach, a position he held for two and a half years. He then took charge of Brondby IF where he stayed until June 2006, lifting the Danish Superliga in 2005 and the Danish Cup in 2003 and 2005. He also had brief spells in charge of Getafe, Spartak Moscow, Mallorca, Swansea and most recently, Atletico Madrid. Tottenham will pay Atletico Madrid 2.8 million pounds in compensation.

In addition to West Ham, Jones also had non-playing roles with Sheffield Wednesday, Cardiff City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Southampton and Stockport County. Having won promotion with three of those clubs, Dave Jones is the man Hammers will pin their hopes to for an immediate return to England's top flight.

By the way on the topic of new signings - I am open to suggestions for recruits on two key positions for the summer - would appreciate advice here.

I need big players who can expertly fill the following midfield roles:
- Regista
- Advanced Playmaker (support)

It would be best if the proposed ones aren't already transfered in a title contender club. I need genuine quality players who are already much better than what I have in these positions. Basicly you can say I am looking to upgrade Cabaye and Anita (just like I managed to upgrade Taylor with Varane in the previous summer - no sideways moves, please). Let me underline the priority is the players are most capable to fill the specified roles, and it would be preferable to pick someone no older than 25.
Veratti and Kroos ?

Media expectations and final standings:

1. Newcastle (media prediction: 4th) - the Magpies successfully defended their title even though there were bigger fish in the pan, at least according to various pundits.

2. Chelsea
(media prediction: 3rd) - the Blues challenged the champions for the title until the very end and had they won it, it would have been deserved.

3. Manchester City (media prediction: 2nd) - the Citizens were expected to do better in the final standings but how much better can you go than 1 point off the champion?

4. Manchester United
(media prediction: 1st) - disappointing season for the Red Devils who were the red hot favourite to win the title but had to fight for top four until the end instead.

5. Arsenal (media prediction: 6th) - the Gunners weren't expected to mix it up at the top but they performed above predictions and barely missed out on a Champions League return.

6. Southampton (media prediction: 8th) - it is the second season running the Saints defy predictions to qualify for Europa League - one could only wonder what Pochettino could do if he had the resources of those above!

7. Tottenham (media prediction: 5th) - it was a largely disappointing campaign for Spurs and it cost Andre Villas-Boas his job but thanks to Capital One Cup and FA Cup quotas going to the league they will return to Europa League.

8. Hull (media prediction: 17th) - widely expected to fight relegation, Hull vastly over performed to a big, big top-half finish.

9. Stoke (media prediction: 12th) - the Potters had a solid season and broke into the top half against the odds.

10. Everton (media prediction: 7th) - the Toffees fell a bit short of expectations but still make it in the top half of the table.

11. Aston Villa (media prediction: 10th) - the Villains barely missed on their predicted top-half finish but the bigger disappointment will be they couldn't follow-up the bright start to the season they had and slid down the table.

12. Fulham (media prediction: 11th) - the Cottagers had a good campaign just within expectations despite implications of Europa League fixture list.

13. Cardiff (media prediction: 16th) - the Welsh club enjoyed a good second campaign in the Premier League and certainly made the fans happy with respectable final position despite predictions for serious trouble.

14. Swansea (media prediction: 9th) - the Swans fell short of the top half finish that was expected of them but all is forgiven as they focused entirely on defending the Europa League trophy - which, incredibly, they succeeded at to book yet another appearance next season!

15. Nottingham Forest (media prediction: 19th) - Forest were strong favourites for the drop but comfortably survived in their first season at the top flight.

16. Queens Park Rangers (media prediction: 14th) - Rangers reached safety early enough during the campaign to call it a good, solid first season after promotion from the Championship.

17. Crystal Palace (media prediction: 18th) - Palace pulled off a miraculous escape and defeated predictions in a manner that will make their fans feel like they won a trophy.

18. West Ham (media prediction: 13th) - disaster struck the Hammers as they fared way below expectations and ultimately failed to secure safety.

19. Brighton (media prediction: 20th) - Brighton were never going to set the Premier League alight and enjoyed their time while around - avoiding finishing bottom of the table was probably a small success for the club that was first confirmed to be relegated.

20. Sunderland (media prediction: 15th) - the Black Cats weren't truly expected to go down but never really convinced and as the season progressed it became evident they would be in trouble - which ultimately resulted in the worst possible outcome.

You've got to be kidding me.
Tell me about it, game went to extra time on 2-2 and my team then led by 3-2 in ET until the last kick of the final, and opposition player scored a total fluke goal, then they won on penalties.

Newcastle 2014/15 individual analysis

May , 2015

By Kevin Keegan

Newcastle failed to repeat the treble-winning heroics from the previous campaign and the bitter taste will take some time to go away after losing the Community Shield and FA Cup to Manchester United and suffering defeat in the Champions League final to Galatasaray, but it was still a successful season which added to the trophy cabinet by winning the Premier League and the Capital One Cup for the second time running. Bitter or not, the time has come for me to share my thoughts on the team and the role each of the players had towards this success.

Goalkeepers:

Tim Krul (27)
View attachment 415488
2013/14: 48 appearances, 58 conceded, 15 shutouts, 1 assist, 1 PoM award, 6.83 average rating
2014/15: 57 appearances, 62 conceded, 22 shutouts, 1 PoM award, 6.76 average rating

The Dutch keeper was once again a rock in goal. Even though the rating suggests a drop in performances compared to last season, Krul has improved his conceded goals ratio a lot and has turned into a big player by pulling a lot of important saves.

Jak Alnwick (21)
View attachment 415487
2013/14: 4 appearances, 1 condeded, 3 shutouts, 6.75 average rating
2014/15: 7 appearances, 6 conceded, 3 shutouts, 6.90 average rating

The young keeper was rarely given a chance and he only made one appearance in the league. Jak has improved somewhat but it has to be pointed out the team did look nervous and shaky in defense when Hristov counted on him and perhaps the time has come to look for more solid experienced back-up.

Central Defenders:

Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa (26)
View attachment 415486
2013/14: 27 (3) appearances, 4 goals, 1 assist, 7.51 average rating
2014/15: 36 (1) appearances, 2 goals, 1 assist, 2 PoM awards, 7.44 average rating
Mapou had another strong season which saw him more involved but the arrival of Varane took away from his confidence and it showed in a slight dip of general form compared to the previous campaign.

Eder Alvarez Balanta (22)
View attachment 415485
2013/14: 33 (5) appearances, 1 goal, 1 assist, 3 PoM awards, 7.41 average rating
2014/15: 31 (7) appearances, 4 goals, 1 assist, 2 PoM awards, 7.35 average rating
Eder improved as a player this season and added goals to his game, although he seemed more impressive overall in the previous campaign.

Kurt Zouma (20)
View attachment 415484
2013/14: 19 (5) appearances, 1 goal, 1 PoM award, 7.40 average rating
2014/15: 36 (1) appearances, 2 goals, 1 assist, 2 PoM awards, 7.44 average rating
Kurt was one of the players to show progress this season after being trusted much more by Hristov. He still has a long walk ahead of him but the curve is heading in the right direction.

Raphael Varane (22)
View attachment 415483
2013/14: 11(4) appearances, 1 goal, 1 PoM award, 7.53 average rating *Real Madrid
2014/15: 32 (5) appearances, 3 goals, 1 PoM award, 7.38 average rating
Varane had a good first season with the Magpies even though he obviously needed time to adapt and couldn't shine as much as he did for his old club Real Madrid in the previous campaign.

Wing Backs:

Gino Peruzzi (22)
View attachment 415482
2013/14: 21 (7) appearances, 1 goal, 6 assists, 2 PoM awards, 7.40 average rating
2014/15: 29 (2) appearances, 2 goals, 8 assists, 2 PoM awards, 7.30 average rating
Gino had a solid second season with the Magpies and maintained his contribution to the team even if his ratings suggest there was a dip in overall form. It must be noted he suffered injury problems and that didn't allow him to establish his regular rhythm.

Leighton Baines (30)
View attachment 415481
2013/14: 29 (4) appearances, 8 goals, 15 assists, 3 PoM awards, 7.38 average rating
2014/15: 28 (7) appearances, 11 goals, 12 assists, 6 PoM awards, 7.55 average rating
The stats say it all - Baines was a monster down the left flank and got much, much better with European football to motivate the best out of him. Newcastle can only hope he maintains that level for years to come as he has entered his 30s.

Alex Sandro (24)
View attachment 415480
2013/14: 16 (7) appearances, 1 goal, 7 assists, 1 PoM award, 7.28 average rating
2014/15: 23 (5) appearances, 1 goal, 3 assists, 7.04 average rating
Disappointing season for Alex Sandro, even though he started off with an injury and had to catch-up later on. Even then he will know more is expected from him if he wants to remain at the club.

Mathieu Debuchy (29)
View attachment 415479
2013/14: 24 (3) appearances, 1 goal, 6 assists, 7.09 average rating
2014/15: 26 (5) appearances, 3 goals, 5 assists, 7.10 average rating
It was a good season for Mathieu, he improved his contribution down the right flank and Hristov should be happy to have him as utility player.

Davide Santon (24)
View attachment 415478
2013/14: 14 (11) appearances, 2 goals, 3 assists, 1 PoM award, 6.98 average rating
2014/15: 22 (14) appearances, 4 goals, 6 assists, 7.22 average rating
Davide was given more starts this season because of injuries in the team and that spurred him to up his game - he is one of the most improved players in the team compared to the previous campaign.

Central Midfielders:

Moussa Sissoko (25)
View attachment 415477
2013/14: 24 (13) appearances, 5 goals, 10 assists, 2 PoM awards, 7.25 average rating
2014/15: 40 (11) appearances, 8 goals, 12 assists, 5 PoM awards, 7.25 average rating
Moussa was the heart and soul of the Newcastle midfield this season, especially in the crucial final stage when Cabaye suffered a broken leg - and he delivered just what was asked from him, despite having to play through fatigue on a number of occasions.

Yohan Cabaye (29)
View attachment 415476
2013/14: 31 (10) appearances, 4 goals, 20 assists, 1 PoM award, 7.20 average rating
2014/15: 23 (3) appearances, 1 goal, 8 assists, 3 PoM awards, 7.14 average rating
Club captain Cabaye didn't have his best season at the club and was struck down by a nightmare injury - it is still doubtful if he will be back in time for the next campaign!

Vurnon Anita (26)
View attachment 415475
2013/14: 26 (3) appearances, 2 assists, 1 PoM award, 7.18 average rating
2014/15: 35 (5) appearances, 2 goals, 1 assist, 7.06 average rating
Anita was again a tidy little player in the defensive midfield but he got a couple games of an advanced role when Cabaye got injured. His contribution was solid and he added a couple goals to help the team - but somewhat fell short from the previous campaign's rating.

Cheick Tiote (28)
View attachment 415474
2013/14: 23 (4) appearances, 1 assist, 1 PoM award, 7.13 average rating
2014/15: 30 (5) appearances, 1 goal, 4 assists, 7.01 average rating
I think Cheick was better this campaign even if the rating suggests otherwise. He added creativity to his midfield displays and crafted several important goals - Hristov will certainly be happy to see this from him.

Inside Forwards:

Erik Lamela (23)
View attachment 415473
2013/14: 34 (8) appearances, 17 goals, 4 assists, 5 PoM awards, 7.12 average rating *Tottenham
2014/15: 29 (8) appearances, 9 goals, 7 assists, 3 PoM awards, 7.15 average rating
Erik had a very positive first season with the Magpies although he suffered injuries and that prevented us from seeing the best of him. He did seem sharper in front of goal for Spurs in the previous campaign but you must not forget he was their penalty taker and didn't have that privilege for us.

Memphis Depay (21)
View attachment 415472
2013/14: 12 (10) appearances, 9 goals, 2 assists, 3 PoM awards, 7.31 average rating
2014/15: 19 (11) appearances, 14 goals, 6 assists, 3 PoM awards, 7.13 average rating
Memphis had more games this season and showed he can score and create, as well as play well up front. I don't care what the rating dip tells you, his stats are very impressive for a player his age - you won't see many score 0.5 goals a game without even having regular football!

Eduardo Salvio (25)
View attachment 415471
2013/14: 34 (9) appearances, 17 goals, 6 assists, 6 PoM awards, 7.22 average rating
2014/15: 18 (11) appearances, 2 goals, 7 assists, 6.99 average rating
Eduardo was a pale shadow of his blazing form from the previous campaign - he had a series of injuries and never got back to that tidy goalscoring spree we remember so well. He did contribute in the final third though so I hope he stays away from knocks next season!

Hatem Ben Arfa (28)
View attachment 415470
2013/14: 26 (2) appearances, 10 goals, 7 assists, 1 PoM award, 7.20 average rating
2014/15: 34 (5) appearances, 13 goals, 15 assists, 3 PoM awards, 7.34 average rating
Ben Arfa had a rare relatively injury-free season and had to step up with other forwards on the sidelines - which he did to a devastating extent, participating in a total of 28 goals. Big improvement from Hatem!

Adnan Januzaj (20)
View attachment 415469
2013/14: 7 (2) appearances, 3 assists, 6.87 average rating *Manchester United
2014/15: 27 (19) appearances, 7 goals, 6 assists, 6.94 average rating
I doubt Hristov intended to use Januzaj so extensively as the boy arrived a teenager despite costing a heck of a load money. Injuries meant Adnan had to be blooded though and he did okay. It was obvious at times he is still uncomfortable with the inside forward role the manager asks him to play though and his rating reflects that.

Strikers:

Papiss Cisse (30)
View attachment 415468
2013/14: 37 (5) appearances, 26 goals, 7 assists, 7 PoM awards, 7.33 average rating
2014/15: 25 (10) appearances, 15 goals, 4 assists, 3 PoM awards, 7.11 average rating
Papiss lost his role as the focal point of Newcastle's attacks this season but was still a regular and performed professionally. He showed how valuable it is to have a quality striker on the bench on a few occasions as well and scored several very important goals. I think he can still contribute to the team and talk of selling him is premature.

Loic Remy (28)
View attachment 415467
2013/14: 33 (8) appearances, 24 goals, 13 assists, 5 PoM awards, 7.35 average rating
2014/15: 30 (11) appearances, 20 goals, 8 assists, 1 PoM awards, 7.04 average rating
I think it was more of the same from Loic this season, even if he didn't appear to shine as much as the last one. His stats were about the same - and that is very, very prolific.

Landon Donovan (33)
View attachment 415466
2013/14: 24 (20) appearances, 17 goals, 10 assists, 2 PoM awards, 7.05 average rating
2014/15: 32 (18) appearances, 19 goals, 10 assists, 3 PoM awards, 7.03 average rating
Landon is still a top player despite his age - of course, five of his goals came from the spot but he did contribute in both scoring and setting up chances on so many occasions and his leadership qualities were relied upon quite so often. I feel Donovan is a major part of the title-winning backbone of this team and hope he has at least a couple more seasons left in the tank.

Luis Suarez (28)
View attachment 415465
2013/14: 29 (4) appearances, 10 goals, 8 assists, 3 PoM awards, 6.99 average rating *Liverpool
2014/15: 42 (8) appearances, 22 goals, 12 assists, 3 PoM awards, 7.09 average rating
Luis was the main man in Hristov's plans. Even though he improved a lot from his last season with Liverpool, I still expected a little bit more from him - he squandered too many chances and if he can add a bit of composure in front of goal he'd be even better. Hopefully he can unleash that beast a bit more next campaign.

A consortium lead by former Newcastle player Olivier Bernard has successfully completed a takeover of Newcastle United, replacing former President Mike Ashley. The turmoil is unlikely to be over at Saint James' Park however, with rumors that the new President will want to replace current manager Dimiter Hristov. According to BBC Sport, Bernard has had strong business links with England in the past and is believed to want to install Kevin Keegan as the new Newcastle boss.

Olivier Bernard takes Newcastle off Mike Ashley

Bernard has released a statement that money has been invested in developing the training ground and youth training facilities - initial estimate indicates that the planned expansion work will cost around 14.75 million pounds. A further 21.5 million pounds has been pumped into the Newcastle coffers. As part of the takeover, a bank loan of 102.0 million pounds has been taken out to help with pre-existing debts and aid the day-to-day running of the club. As a result the money available for transfers will now be 32.54 million pounds, an increase of 13.54 million on the previous budget. The board has announced plans to enlarge the stadium by 7595 seats. Initial estimate indicates that the planned expansion work will cost around 9.25 million pounds. It is expected that it will take around 6 months to complete. The stadium capacity will be temporarily reduced as the west stand will be closed during this renovation. Newcastle have also successfully applied to raise their youth category rating from Category 2 to Category 1.

What the... Well done, Olivier! Can you at least please lift the transfer embargo before the transfer window expires?!

Maybe this was the worst possible time to lose a Champions League final to freaking Galatasaray...

Wind of change blows at Saint James' Park - Hristov favorite leaves the team

The initial enthusiasm of Olivier Bernard making a shock return to Newcastle to buy Mike Ashley out has quickly turned into tension of uncertainty with manager Dimiter Hristov's future up in the air. Despite official news the club has the largest transfer budget available in this summer, the opening move on the market has done little to convince it will be Hristov who gets a chance to spend it. Newcastle have confirmed one of the Bulgarian's favorite players, tenacious midfielder Cheick Tiote (28), has been allowed to leave for Benfica in a 25.0 million pounds move.

View attachment 415165
Tiote in a shock move to Benfica

Tiote has spent five good years at Tyneside and was an unsung hero in the sole defensive midfield role Hristov employs in his usual formation. His loss is a major blow in the manager's attempt to convince new owner Olivier Bernard he is the right man to drive the club forward, even though he denied any of it in front of the media:

Reporter: Mr. Hristov, it is widely reported Cheick Tiote was sold over your head and Olivier Bernard has already eyed a replacement in line with another manager's ideas. Your comment?
Dimiter Hristov: This is total nonsense. I have had a conversation with Olivier and he has reassured me there have been no talks with another manager as of yet. We will continue our discussions and it is up to me to convince the new owner he doesn't need to make changes to maintain the high standard we have already established at the club. This is the last you will hear from me on this topic until there is anything substantial to comment on.
Reporter: Does that mean the sale of Cheick Tiote - who is hugely popular with the Newcastle fans - is your transfer?
Dimiter Hristov: Yes. We were exposed in that area in the end of last season after we were unfortunate to lose Cabaye and I genuinely believe we need to change something if we want to stay competitive. I have great respect for Cheick and wish him well for the future but we had to be responsible for the future of this team and sadly he had to go.

Time will tell if those were genuine comments, or words of a manager backed in a corner and unwilling to take a blast at his boss to keep hopes alive.

Cheick Tiote transfer verdict: 4.0/10 - this is perhaps the best fee Newcastle could hope to receive for the defensive midfielder but he is still at his prime and the fans will regret losing one of their favorites.

This is without a shadow of a doubt the biggest transfer window Newcastle have had for at least a decade and with one key player already lost, we will keep a tracker on how the transfer budget is spent. The transfer fee received for Cheick Tiote has been added to the pot:

Newcastle transfer budget: 57.54 million pounds (32.54 million initial)

DRAIN your opponents strategy back at Old Trafford

We were once hated and feared for our ability to go to those who dared to threaten our supremacy and take their best players. That has been forgotten since the emergence of financial powerhouses Man City and Chelsea but David Moyes reminded us of those days today as Manchester United announced the capture of Christian Eriksen (23) from Tottenham for a 23.5 million pounds fee. Of course you may argue if Spurs are the ones we need to fear but I think they are much more dangerous than last season suggests because they now have a new manager and their entire front line doesn't suffer broken legs.

View attachment 415149
Eriksen comes to Old Trafford

Eriksen is a very pacy, technical and creative attacking midfielder. He will definitely add class to our already solid midfield with his constant movement off the ball, tricky passing and ability to finish when no other options are present. The 49-times capped Denmark international spent two seasons at White Hart Lane so he is an established Premier League player already despite his age - and he has scored 15 goals and created 38 more in 99 games for Spurs.

Christian Eriksen transfer verdict: 8.0/10 - buying good players is essential, weakening your opponents while you strengthen yourself is even better.
