Lee Dixon: Citizens take full advantage of Munich turmoil

LEE DIXON Monday 17 August 2015
The football world was in shock when it was revealed there was a high-profile tax fraud surrounding Josep Guardiola's contract with FC Bayern. The Munich club swiftly dismissed the accusations but a further announcement by authorities in Germany painted a grim picture - there is indeed something wrong with financial accounts and it is now believed the Guardiola contract is just the tip of the iceberg. Initial inspections have established for certain there have been huge financial packages going under the table during a number of transfers FC Bayern have conducted in recent seasons. The extent of these is yet to be clarified but the Germans are facing serious penalties the most severe of which being thrown out of professional football.

Financial irregularities confirmed

Shock or not, the sharks are already circling around a FC Bayern squad full of world-class players. The entire team initially claimed to be united in this darkest hour although after it became evident the scandal would not go away and there isn't even the slightest chance of a positive resolution, the players are privately considering their options. Manchester City were expected to be the first to take advantage after manager Jurgen Klopp was locked in heated talks with the board after the opening game of the season with Chelsea, reportedly about the lack of substantial investment in the market. It was thought the owners were exploring the opportunity of attracting Josep Guardiola at the Etihad although that avenue was dismissed after the Munich crisis expanded.

Citizens explored option to appoint Guardiola

Instead, Manchester City have decided to pursue another plan of action after Jurgen Klopp convinced the power brokers his extensive contacts in Germany can be utilized to lure some of the FC Bayern stars - who were thought of as untouchable in the market. Klopp initially wanted to try and sign a former player of his - flamboyant midfielder Mario Gotze (23). A series of phone calls quickly revealed the player would be open for a move but the Germans were desperate to protect their prized asset and slapped a massive 75.0 million pounds asking price on him. It backfired as the Citizens were willing to meet it and a pre-signed contract with Gotze kicked in, effectively tying the hands of the Bundesliga club - effectively meaning Mario Gotze became a Manchester City player!

Gotze seals Manchester City move...

We will never know the details behind what happened next but it is easy to fill in the gaps knowing the facts. Having sensed the taste of blood in the water, Klopp had a prolonged discussion with Gotze about which of his former teammates would be willing to move in the same direction. It was probably how the manager understood Manchester City had the chance to try and sign FC Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (29). The same negotiations technique was employed and a 40.0 million pounds was eventually agreed to rubber-stamp the transfer.

... world-class Neuer follows...

Manchester City didn't stop there. Surprisingly, legendary fullback Philipp Lahm (31) expressed a desire to follow Neuer and Gotze to the Etihad and a tentative 35.0 million pounds offer proved enough to force a deal. Sources at the club tell us the Citizens tried for another FC Bayern player but the Germans lined up the entire team and issued strict orders to cut off any contact with other clubs. The identity of the fourth transfer target will remain a mystery.

... legendary Lahm completes the trio of signings

Mario Gotze transfer verdict: 10/10 - brilliant player down the left wing with many years of top football ahead of him.

Manuel Neuer transfer verdict: 10/10 - one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

Philipp Lahm transfer verdict: 9.5/10 - despite his advancing years, Lahm is still a top player and can help a lot even in this Manchester City lineup.

Tony Cascarino Commentary
Last updated at 9:13PM, August 18 2015

Jose Mourinho went public about his desire to add another central defender after admitting captain John Terry is unlikely to feature as regularly this season and the board hurried to give him one. Chelsea have officially announced the signing of Steven Caulker (23) from Cardiff. The Wales club will receive a 14.25 million pounds fee. Despite spending the past two seasons in the Welsh capitol, Steven is more than familiar with life in London, having graduated from Tottenham's academy.

Caulker in the blue shirt

Compared to the other central defenders already at Mourinho's disposal, Caulker is the safe option. His aerial ability is only matched by Mangala and his overall defensive qualities are second to none. Steven will be useful in games that require solid defending but will probably be on the bench when Chelsea need to be chasing a goal.

Steven Caulker transfer verdict: 5.5/10 - decent fourth option and a good player to have at the bench when defending a lead.

The recent activity on the transfer market has finally given Manchester City an angle to try and lure the most evasive target they have chased ever since the Arabs took over. World-class superstar Lionel Messi (28) was impressed with the team Jurgen Klopp has put together and told his agent he would consider an approach after watching the trio of Neuer, Lahm and Gotze signed at the Etihad. The necessary calls were made and Barcelona decided to accept a 100.0 million pounds fee for the Argentinean after taking into account his age.

A dream come true

There isn't much that can be said for Messi - if you don't know and appreciate his talent, you know nothing about football. He has received recognition by racking up numerous awards, including World Golden Ball (5 times winner), World Player of the Year (4 times winner), European Golden Shoe (3 times winner). His personal trophy cabinet treasures no less than 22 winner medals from various competitions. Football is a game of goals and these are what Messi does best - he has scored 250 of them in 308 league games for Barcelona.

Lionel Messi transfer verdict: 20/10 - the perfect choice to pair with Cristiano Ronaldo - now we can really see which one of them is better!!

Premier League predictions: Lawro v Liam Gallagher

BBC Sport's football expert Mark Lawrenson is pitting his wits against a different guest each week this season.

This week he takes on Liam Gallagher, the frontman of the band Beady Eye, a Manchester City fan and formerly one of the two frontmen of one of the most prominent Britpop bands - Oasis. Gallagher's erratic behaviour, distinctive singing style, and abrasive attitude have been the subject of commentary in the press. He remains one of the most recognisable figures in modern British music.

Lawro vs Man City fan Liam

A correct result is worth ONE point. A correct score earns THREE points.

Chelsea - Arsenal
Liam Gallagher: This is the perfect game to see both Chelsea and Arsenal drop points. 2-2.
Mark Lawrenson: I think the hosts will take it even if I like the current Arsenal team - 2-1.

Manchester United - Fulham
Liam Gallagher: No way in **** will I predict a home win in this one. 2-2.
Mark Lawrenson: The Red Devils will win this, whatever the visitors are up to. 3-1.

Newcastle - Manchester City
Liam Gallagher: Not the perfect game to predict but with Messi and Ronaldo we should put them to sword. 1-3.
Mark Lawrenson: Even though the Citizens have shown who is king on the market this week, it will be too early for their new recruits to make the devastating impact everyone expects them to. 2-2.

Tottenham - Leeds
Liam Gallagher: I feel good old Leeds will book a win here. 1-2.
Mark Lawrenson: Spurs have started brightly and I fully expect them to build on in this relatively easy home game. 3-1.

Last week, Lawro got three results right, with no perfect scores. His score of 3 was enough to stop Arsenal fan Hugh Laurie, with the comedian scoring 2 thanks to his two correct results, no perfect scores.

Gary Lineker: Good evening and welcome to Match of the Day for our thoughts on the 2015/16 Premier League season! It seems the race will be as tight as ever this time around and as we all know it is those direct 6-pointer clashes that play a decisive part in deciding who will fly and who will fall. For this reason we will be focusing solely on those giant games in Match of the Day. Stay with us as Alan Hansen and Alan Shearer aid me on analyzing the key aspects of what happened and why it happened for you!

Chelsea - Arsenal
1-0
View attachment 414096

Gary Lineker: Stamford Bridge geared up for Chelsea's second title contenders derby in a row, awaiting ambitious Arsenal. Both teams failed to start the season with a win but the Gunners were probably more disappointing after falling to a shocking home defeat to Stoke. Jose Mourinho saw his players salvage a point from a losing position away at the Etihad but wanted more from this game. Brazilian superstar Neymar was a big disappointment a week ago but rose to the occasion this time and scored a great individual goal in the first half - which ultimately proved to be enough for a massive win to be sealed.
Alan Hansen: It was a very combative game, as suggested by the fact the ref had to pull the yellow card out of his pocked on nine occasions. But combat was all Arsenal had while Chelsea played football. Whatever Mourinho said in the dressing room it worked and his side were by far the better team on the pitch and I honestly thought the margin should have been bigger in the end.
Alan Shearer: As already said, Neymar was tremendous in this game, he got involved in everything interesting in the final third for the home side, his runs were a puzzle for the Gunners defense and of course he bagged the winner. Deserved PoM award winner. Ramires, Ashley Cole and Wallace were also at a different level. Cavani was a pale shadow of his usual self though - probably we can expect him to score a hattrick in Chelsea's next game now. As for the Gunners, Diego Reyes gave everything despite being played a bit out of position by Wenger. Captain Vermaelen and Mesut Ozil failed to rise to the occasion though.
Gary Lineker: Just two rounds in and we already see Arsenal are struggling to ignite while Chelsea are living up to their tag of most likely champion. Wenger will need to make some changes before this slow start turns into a full blown crisis and another season is ruined for the Gunners.

Gary Lineker: Reigning champions Newcastle couldn't have wished for a worse time to meet moneybags Manchester City - the Citizens were on the back of a special week, having just signed players like Neuer, Lahm, Gotze and of course Lionel Messi. The entire world was anticipating the Argentine's debut alongside Cristiano Ronaldo - all of which was a bad omen for the home side. Instead of intimidating them though it put more fuel in their engines and the Magpies were eager to show why they won the Premier League two times in a row. Just twenty-five minutes in the game they already had a two goal lead with Lamela and Peruzzi goals. The Citizens tried to get back in it but Jurgen Klopp's substitutions backfired when Jovetic limped off with ten minutes to go and the visitors had to finish the game with ten men. All they could was get a consolation goal but Newcastle never allowed any genuine pressure to look for an equalizer.
Alan Hansen: I thought City lacked balance in this game, they needed some time to feel the dynamics and adapt with so many new players straight in the starting team - Newcastle applied great early pressure though and it materialized in a double goal lead, which was too much. Everyone was so carried away with this Messi and Ronaldo nonsense that they forgot it is the champions who City faced and this side achieved what it did for a reason. Newcastle had the better team effort in this game and I believe the scoreline firmly reflected that.
Alan Shearer: I thought wonderkid Will Hughes had a great debut game considering the magnitude of the clash - the lad even created a goal. Lamela was also impressive but Gino Peruzzi was simply unstoppable down the right flank, he got a goal and picked up the PoM award. Kompany was the best player from the visitors team. Alaba, Yaya Toure and Vidal were also great completely matching the Magpies in midfield but it was the offensive players who let City down - that's right, those so-called superstars.
Gary Lineker: This result means Man City have only picked up one point from their first two games this season and their title bid is already under threat! The Magpies couldn't have wished for a better start and this monumental win will give them confidence in their unlikely quest to win the crown for the third time in a row.

Woah, could you provide some info about Spanish and German leagues? I mean what's wrong with them? Barcelona and Bayern must've dropped out of CL that the likes of Goezte and Messi were sold, to England at that where they don't want to come originally.

This wasn't the kind of show the neutral viewers would have cherished but that's what those two were capable of producing. The referee probably spoiled the game as it wasn't needed to flash the red card so easily. Even then the Premier League team was in deep trouble as the Turks were dominating the game and the result was a just reflection of what we saw on the pitch. Premier League predictions: Lawro v Phil Collins

BBC Sport's football expert Mark Lawrenson is pitting his wits against a different guest each week this season.

This week he takes on Tottenham fan Phil Collins, English musician, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, actor and writer, best known both as drummer and vocalist for English rock group Genesis and as a solo artist.

Lawro vs Spurs fan Phil

A correct result is worth ONE point. A correct score earns THREE points.

Liverpool - Chelsea
Phil Collins: I'd like to be romantic and say the Merseyside greats will win it but I'll side with caution and predict a draw. 1-1.
Mark Lawrenson: Whoever thinks Liverpool will be a match for the likes of Chelsea so soon after returning to the Premier League is either blinded by passion or knows nothing about football. 0-3.

Manchester United - Newcastle
Phil Collins: It would be ideal if those two eat points off each other. 2-2.
Mark Lawrenson: I will side with the champions here, they already beat the Red Devils once this season and will be favorites to do so again. 1-3.

Fulham - Tottenham
Phil Collins: We just must keep going after the good start. 0-3.
Mark Lawrenson: This one will be harder for Spurs, it's a London derby and I don't feel they have solved their consistency issues yet. 1-1.

Arsenal - Manchester City
Phil Collins: It will be real pleasure watching the likes of Messi, Ronaldo and Gotze slice through the Gunners defense. 0-4.
Mark Lawrenson: I'm not sure the Citizens will be that comfortable handling three title contender derbies in a row. 2-2.

Last week, Lawro got three results rights, with no perfect scores. His score of 3 was too much for the predictions of Manchester City fan Liam Gallagher, who also managed no correct results with no perfect scores.
