Gary Lineker: Good evening and welcome to Match of the Day for our thoughts on the 2016/17 Premier League season! It seems the race will be as tight as ever this time around and as we all know it is those direct 6-pointer clashes that play a decisive part in deciding who will fly and who will fall. For this reason we will be focusing solely on those giant games in Match of the Day. Stay with us as Alan Hansen and Alan Shearer aid me on analyzing the key aspects of what happened and why it happened for you!

Newcastle - Manchester City
3-2

Gary Lineker: Newcastle prepared for a very tough home game with Man City with nothing less than three points guaranteeing them top spot after this weekend. The Citizens knew a win would let them overtake their hosts in the table and even potentially fire them up at the summit if Man United failed to win. The visitors shot themselves in the foot with an early own goal from David Silva - but were quickly given a lifeline as Debuchy somehow managed to pick up his second yellow card in only the ninth minute! Despite serious pressure from the visiting team there were no more goals before the break. The second half made up in abundance though and it was the Magpies who got something to cheer again when the referee made a tough call to award them a penalty and send Kompany off for a professional foul just after the hour mark. Balotelli slotted the ball home to double the home lead. Buoyed by the positive development, the Magpies wasted little time with Suarez adding a third one. Instead of collapsing, the Citizens were galvanized by this and Aguero pulled one back with ten minutes to go. Lovren added another in the 89th to make for a very intriguing ending but there were no more and Newcastle survived the bloodbath at Saint James' Park!
Alan Hansen: What can you say after a game like that! Simply breathtaking! The peculiar decision to play Debuchy as left wingback was definitely a mistake but how he could get himself sent off for two yellow cards so early in the game is beyond comprehension. It was all Man City in the next 50 minutes but they simply failed to capitalize and produced just a flurry of long shots. That takes us to the second big call from the ref - the Newcastle penalty was justified but I am not so sure about the red shown to Kompany. Perhaps the referee felt like compensating but it definitely changed the game and Newcastle went on to score it and add a third just after. And when you expected it the least, Man City woke up late to pull two back - but it was way too late and they just didn't have enough time to look for an equalizer.
Alan Shearer: It was a big game for Zouma and Krul but Balotelli stole the show and took the PoM award for Newcastle. The subs made the difference for Man City - Aguero and Lovren both came in to score. Alaba and Zabaleta were quite ineffective for the visitors which definitely limited their wing play.
Gary Lineker: It is a big result for Newcastle and they remain top of the table a single point over Man United. The Citizens have fallen back - they are still third but trail the Magpies by five points and have Chelsea, Arsenal and even Tottenham sniffing at their backs!

0 Current first team injuries.

Chelsea
(4th; 27pts; +17) - the Blues picked up the maximum 9 points this month to leap four spots in the table and make a return to the top four - they will also hope it's not too late to join the title race as the gap has been cut from 12 to 7 points!

Jack Rodwell - 2 weeks (pulled hamstring)
Sami Khedira - 6-7 weeks (hip injury)
Alexis Sanchez - 7-8 weeks (torn knee ligaments)

Other teams to watch:

Tottenham (6th) - Spurs moved one position higher in the table and are definitely involved even in the fight for top four despite all the dressing room issues with multiple players refusing to take a pay cut!

Leeds (7th) - the Whites dropped two positions in the table but are still positioned well to mount a challenge for European qualification.

Everton, Bolton and West Ham occupy the bottom three - the Toffees are one result away from safety as it stands but the other two have only won one game each and must improve a lot to stand a chance of survival.

Premier League predictions: Lawro v Cheryl Cole

BBC Sport's football expert Mark Lawrenson is pitting his wits against a different guest each week this season.

This week he takes on English recording artist, songwriter, dancer and Newcastle fan Cheryl Ann Cole, known as a member of the girl group Girls Aloud, as well as her solo singer career. Her group achieved 20 top-ten singles (including four number one singles) in the UK and six platinum albums (two of which went to number one) and earned five BRIT Award nominations from 2005 to 2010.

Lawro vs Newcastle fan Cheryl

A correct result is worth ONE point. A correct score earns THREE points.

Blackburn - Manchester City
Cheryl Cole: Rovers could actually do something interesting in this one. 2-1.
Mark Lawrenson: I'm sorry, Rover fans, but City will win this. 1-3.

Manchester United - Bolton
Cheryl Cole: The Red Devils fans laughed at Man City when Klopp wanted to leave for Bolton in the summer but it will be the sky blues fans to return the favor here. 1-1.
Mark Lawrenson: Easy home win by a big margin. 4-0.

Stoke - Chelsea
Cheryl Cole: Very tough away game for the Blues and they can easily slip up. 1-1.
Mark Lawrenson: I'll back the Blues to keep going at Britannia. 1-3.

Tottenham - Arsenal
Cheryl Cole: The Gunners should win, Spurs are in deep trouble. 1-3.
Mark Lawrenson: I actually think Tottenham are not doomed at all and it could go either way but I'll predict a draw. 2-2.

Newcastle - Derby County
Cheryl Cole: We should take this easily. 3-0.
Mark Lawrenson: I also expect the Magpies to cruise at home. 4-0.

Last week, Lawro got four results right, with one perfect score. His score of 6 was just good enough to beat the predictions of Chelsea fan Bill Clinton, who scored 5, managing three correct results with one perfect score.

Blackburn - Manchester City

View attachment 406789

Gary Lineker: Blackburn welcomed Man City at Ewood Park in a game both teams needed something from, the gap between them 6 points. The Citizens were pretty much in the title race while Rovers envisaged a top four challenge. It all ended up in a spectacular match with numerous chances for both sides but finishing was nowhere to be found and the final score was a 0-0 draw.
Alan Hansen: Despite what the scoreline suggests it was a very open game and both sides deserve credit for the show they put on the pitch. Of course the Citizens had more chances but Blackburn also created more than enough and I honestly do not know how none of those went in! Let me say both teams missed three clear cut opportunities which is probably more than you will see in any title contender derby.
Alan Shearer: I have to applaud the home defense - all of them excelled, especially Papadopoulos - but ter Stegen was amazing in goal, pulling no less than nine saves to pick up the PoM award. Lovren, Alaba and Lahm were decent for the Citizens, too. Ronaldo had an abnormal poor game and squandered nine chances before Klopp finally lost his patience and took him off in the 72nd minute.
Gary Lineker: Failure to win at Ewood Park puts the Citizens 7 points short of the top and 6 off second place - even though they remain third, Chelsea and Arsenal are now on par with them in terms of points. Blackburn won't be too disappointed though as this draw keeps them within 6 points from the top four.

View attachment 406494

Gary Lineker: Arsenal welcomed rivals Man United at the Emirates needing nothing less than a win to keep title hopes alive, the gap between the two teams six points at the time. The Red Devils were trailing leaders Newcastle by one and needed something to maintain pressure although it was the Gunners who exploded in the end with a Smalling own goal and Wilshere strike within five minutes to seal a vital victory!
Alan Hansen: Expectations of an even match with slight advantage for the visitors were wide off the mark as the Gunners dominated throughout the game and even though they needed a little luck with the opener the outcome was nothing less than they deserved. Man United were largely disappointing and only managed a single shot on target. I think Arsenal could have wrapped it up much earlier if it wasn't for the injury Cavani picked up in the first half.
Alan Shearer: Wilshere picked up the PoM award after scoring the second for the home team and he was the most threatening player on the pitch, managing as many shots as the entire Man United side. Ben Davies was also pretty good for the Gunners. Phil Jones and Jordi Alba were the only visiting players to impress but Fellaini disappointed before Moyes finally took him off.
Gary Lineker: This result means Man United missed on a great opportunity to return at the helm of the league table after Newcastle only managed a draw this round - but it also puts Arsenal back in the frame and opens up the top quite a bit!
