A correct result is worth ONE point. A correct score earns THREE points.

Stoke - Manchester United
Sting: The Potters are pretty good at home and they could draw blood from the leaders at Britannia. 1-1.
Mark Lawrenson: As impressive and solid as Stoke are, I can't see past the Red Devils in this one. 1-3.

Chelsea - Nottingham Forest
Sting: I don't think the Blues will allow any surprise here. 3-0.
Mark Lawrenson: I also expect a comfortable home win at Stamford Bridge. 2-0.

Fulham - Newcastle
Sting: We should be able to pull a routine win in this one. 0-2.
Mark Lawrenson: I'll back the Magpies to take this, they have hit form but it will be hard. 1-3.

Manchester City - West Ham
Sting: No contest at all. 4-0.
Mark Lawrenson: The Hammers are not up for the Premier League standard right now and it could be embarrassing. 5-0.

Aston Villa - Blackburn
Sting: I'll back Rovers to win it but it's not a clear-cut result in this one. 1-2.
Mark Lawrenson: Villa won't be easy to beat at home and Blackburn aren't that convincing. 2-2.

Arsenal - Southampton
Sting: Home win in this one for me. 2-0.
Mark Lawrenson: The Saints sold most of their stars this summer but are still a formidable opposition. 1-1.

A correct result is worth ONE point. A correct score earns THREE points.

Chelsea - Newcastle
Darcey Bussell: I think the Magpies are the better side at the moment. 1-3.
Mark Lawrenson: I really don't see anything separating those two, despite the win the Magpies got midweek in the cup clash. 2-2.

Aston Villa - Manchester United
Darcey Bussell: It could well be a surprise at Villa Park. 1-1.
Mark Lawrenson: The Red Devils should win this. 1-3.

Manchester City - Derby County
Darcey Bussell: No miracles here. 3-0.
Mark Lawrenson: I'll back the Citizens for a big win. 5-1.

Arsenal - Nottingham Forest
Darcey Bussell: Let's say Forest will produce an upset - cause I can't say Arsenal will win, right? 1-1.
Mark Lawrenson: Home win for me, clear-cut. 3-0.

Fulham - Blackburn

Darcey Bussell: Rovers have enough to win this one. 1-3.
Mark Lawrenson: I'll say a draw is the most likely come out at Craven Cottage. 2-2.

Gary Lineker: Good evening and welcome to Match of the Day for our thoughts on the 2016/17 Premier League season! It seems the race will be as tight as ever this time around and as we all know it is those direct 6-pointer clashes that play a decisive part in deciding who will fly and who will fall. For this reason we will be focusing solely on those giant games in Match of the Day. Stay with us as Alan Hansen and Alan Shearer aid me on analyzing the key aspects of what happened and why it happened for you!

Chelsea - Newcastle
1-2
View attachment 407511

Gary Lineker: Stamford Bridge became the arena of a massive clash between champions Chelsea and runner-up Newcastle as both teams had a sluggish start this season. The home side were in more urgent need of a win though as they were already 9 points behind the top while the Magpies recovered to maintain a 5 point difference to current leaders Man United. Chelsea were also searching vengeance for the loss in a Capital One Cup clash just a few days ago. After a cagey first half it was the visitors who exploded though and goals from Depay and Peruzzi gave them a comfortable lead in the second half. Mata pulled one back for Chelsea with ten minutes to go to make a very interesting endspiel but both outfits missed several chances after that and the final score confirmed Newcastle as the winners in this epic battle!
Alan Hansen: The Magpies have received much praise for their offensive might in recent games but I think they have to thank their solid defensive display in this one as it provided the foundation for the win. The visitors were particularly good at defending set pieces and never let Chelsea take advantage of the numerous chances they had to cross the ball in the box. As a matter of fact the Blues were slightly better in every single compartment - chances, possession, tackles, headers, pass accuracy... but Newcastle were way more clinical with their shooting and it showed. What Mourinho should be concerned with after this game is the lack of composure and balance his players showed.
Alan Shearer: I must say Mourinho got his subs right though because Hazard and Mata came off the bench to combine for the Chelsea goal - they were the only home players who can be positive about their performance. Hummels and especially captain Ashley Cole were terrible though. Depay got the PoM award after scoring the opener for Newcastle but he was backed by strong displays from Peruzzi and Varane. Leighton Baines had a somewhat surprisingly poor game though.
Gary Lineker: This brilliant win allows Newcastle to remain 5 points off leaders Man United but it puts Chelsea in deep trouble - the Blues are now 12 points off the top and 5 short of a top four position!

Manchester United (1st; 30pts; +24) - the Red Devils picked up all 12 points on offer this month and extend their flawless start of the season to 10 out of 10!!!
Player of the month: Gareth Bale - 7.48
2 Current first team injuries:
Wayne Rooney - 11-14 days (twisted knee)
Olivier Giroud - 12-21 days (double hernia)

Newcastle (2nd; 25pts; +19) - the Magpies picked up all 12 points on offer this month and rise to second position in the table, closest to leaders Man United - but the five point gap between those two remains.
Player of the month: Raphael Varane - 8.10
2 Current first team injuries:
Eduardo Salvio - 1-3 days (twisted knee)
Loic Remy - 10-14 days (twisted ankle)

Manchester City
(3rd; 23pts; +21) - the Citizens picked up 10 points this month but the perfect performance from teams around them means they slide down one position and are now 7 behind arch rivals Man United.
Player of the month: Sergio Aguero - 8.20
0 Current first team injuries.

Arsenal (4th; 23pts; +15) - the Gunners picked up all 12 points on offer this month and such consistent form allows them to climb two positions in the table and make a much welcome return to the top four.
Player of the month: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - 8.02
3 Current first team injuries:
Lukasz Fabianski - 1-2 days (bruised head)
Gedion Zelalem - 1 day (bruised head)
Mesut Ozil - 1-3 days (pulled hamstring)

Blackburn
(6th; 20pts; +13) - Rovers managed to grab 10 points this month which allows them to overcome Chelsea in the table - they are also just 3 points off the top four as it stands.
Player of the month: Sami Khedira - 7.64
3 Current first team injuries:
Kyriakos Papadopoulos - 3-4 weeks (torn groin muscle)
Toni Kroos - 1-3 days (dislocated jaw)
Channing Chicksen - 2-4 days (gashed upper leg)

Chelsea
(8th; 18pts; +12) - the Blues picked up just 7 points this month and slided 3 places in the table - it is still early but defending the title would take something real special from Jose Mourinho and his boys now the gap to the top is up to massive 12 points!
Player of the month: Juan Mata - 7.62
3 Current first team injuries:
John Obi Mikel - 5-9 days (pulled hamstring)
Thiago Alcantara - 2-7 days (sports hernia)
Falcao - 2-3 weeks (strained knee ligaments)

Other teams to watch:

Leeds (5th) - the Whites finally suffered a first loss this season and collapsed out of the top four but are still in contention.

Tottenham (7th) - Spurs dropped out of the title contenders list this season but are still a strong team despite financial trouble after heavy investment in a new ground and with three points off a top four position they can certainly mount a Champions League challenge.

Bolton, Hull and West Ham occupy the bottom three but it's still pretty tight down there. The Hammers finally got their first win of the season but remain rock bottom and must add points, and soon!
