Chelsea vs. Arsenal
Stamford Bridge, London
FA Premier League, 19:45 KO

Live Text Commentary

19:10: Welcome to the last live game of 2009, and it's a big one. 2nd placed Chelsea face 3rd place Arsenal in what should be a thrilling match. Chelsea come off the back of two morale-boosting victories, and are also boosted by the return of Didier Drogba. But the main news coming out of the Chelsea camp is Ashley Cole stating an interest in joining Manchester City.
19:21: Chelsea give Rodwell another start after his brilliant performance against Fulham 2 days ago, and Drogba starts what could be his last game until the Cup of Nations in January.
19:25: So here it is then, the Chelsea team sheet:
Chelsea: Cech, Bosingwa, A. Cole, Carvalho, Terry, Mikel, Rodwell, Essien, Lampard, Ba, Drogba
No doubt they are all very tired after a very strenuous few days, but wouldn't this be a win and a half. No doubt about it
19:45: We're underway in the last game of 2k9. And Arsenal have started 18-year old Coquelin due to injuries.
19:47: Chelsea are undone easily by William Gallas' long ball, but van Persie can't capitalise.
19:55: Bakary Sagna hits a shocking clearance out for a corner, when under no real pressure, not what Arsenal need. It comes to nothing.
19:57: Rodwell looking creative again, this time threading Lampard through, but he hits it straight at Almunia.
19:59: That's a fantastic pass. Francis Coquelin plays the ball right behind the Chelsea defence, but it's Abou Diaby there, and he hits it straight at Cech.
20:01: Chelsea have a good opportunity there. Arsenal's corner from the previous chance is cleared up to Rodwell, who holds it well before releasing Bosingwa, who slots a wonderful pass behind the defence to Ba, who on his form at the moment you would expect to tuck the chance away, but Almunia makes a great save.
20:09: Great play there from Chelsea. They pass it round Arsenal's box freely, and Rodwell plays a ball to the edge of the box where Bosingwa is waiting to hit a screamer, but it hits the crossbar, and Sagna heads the rebound back to Almunia.
20:12: Agh, Chelsea should be ahead. Drogba and Lampard work well together, and Drogba cleverly flicks his pass back to him, and he is in plenty of space, but Almunia makes a wonderful save down to his right to deny him.
20:31: Nasri has the last chance of the half and it's a free-kick, but he hits it just over. HALF TIME Chelsea 0 - 0 Arsenal Good first half performance from Chelsea, but they need to take one of these chances before it's too late.
20:45: Drogba can't play on, as is hip is playing up again. Anelka replaces him for the second half. How will that alter things? Second half underway
20:55: Nasri works it well out wide, and wins a corner off Cole. It's cleared to Clichy who hits a nice shot, but it goes just over.
21:00: Diaby does nicely to slot van Persie in and he should do better. He wins a corner anyway..
21:10: Joe Cole replaces the dissapointing Lampard.
21:17: Chelsea replace Demba Ba with Salomon Kalou. Things have died down here now.
21:22: Arsenal have picked up an injury here, and it looks like it's Senderos.
21:27: Senderos is coming off for Silvestre.
21:30: 4 minutes of injury time and we're still level at Stamford Bridge.
21:32: GOAL Chelsea 1 - 0 Arsenal OHHHH YESSSSS!!!! SO LATE IN THE GAME!!! Route one football has gotten Chelsea the goal here, and it comes from an Arsenal throw in. The ball is thrown to Ashley Cole who kicks it as hard as he can with his left foot, and with Arsenal's players all committed forward, Kalou races in unmarked and keeps his head to score what could be a very, very, very important goal for Chelsea.
21:37: FULL TIME Chelsea 1 - 0 Arsenal That's such an important win for Chelsea. And it's the substitute who scored. Drogba and Ba started the game, Anelka and Kalou finish it, and fantastic composure from Kalou under the circumstances to stick away his opportunity. Chelsea can look forward to 2010 now having won their last 3 games on the trot. A brilliant result in a very tough game.

Joe Cole and Rodwell celebrate with a modest Kalou after he nets the vital winner.

very good game then with that late goal and i will do an end of season update soon instead of march update and just do the edn of season....and again you have one **** of a game lol

matteee, I was out of my seat, that was such an amazing end. we deserved that in my opinion, with some of the s**t luck we've had of late. Kalou's been getting some really important goals this season, I'm delighted with him.
got a bit of money now, might be looking into buying another striker with drogba going to acon.

oohh good stuff, I'll have to have a look at it, I've been coursework as well as this, so haven't had time to look at others games, I'll have a look soon :).

Half-way season review for Chelsea 2009-2010

It's been a difficult start to this season, but we can reflect on these first 5 months as a success in many ways. We've overcome our sticky patch to beat Arsenal and overcome a resilient Fulham, and we have shown on many occassions that we have the grit neccessary to become Champions. On that front I am happy.

I am also happy with the signings we have made. Demba Ba has settled in fantastically, and although he has had a few games where he has been dissappointing, he has filled in for injuries to Drogba and Anelka well and is now our top goalscorer. Jack Rodwell has HUGE potential, and that strike against Fulham was a joy to behold. He's really developing and is being dubbed "the new Frank Lampard". Claude Makelele hasn't had much of a chance to play, but he was bought as back-up, and that is mainly for the next month, while Essien and Mikel are on international duty.

Our youth team has flourished this season with the introduction of a host of new players. Mario Gotze, Christian Scholz and Andreas Jensen joined from Germany, and are very hot property in Europe at the moment. Christian Scholz is a central midfielder, and at 15 years old, has bags and bags of potential. He is joint top scorer despite being a central midfielder, along with Phillip Prosenik, another great potential. Mario Gotze has had very little chance to settle in yet, as he has been ravaged by injuries, but Jensen is a really exciting prospect. Currently being tutored by captain Terry, he claims that this kid could easily become one of the next best players in the world. As for English talent, Josh McEachran is the hottest property in the Under-18 squad, and despite a couple of injuries, has really impressed. We've also been impressed by the improvements that young Billy Knott is making, scoring a couple of vital goals for the Under-18s. They were knocked out of the FA Youth Cup in the 4th Round against Fulham, despite Christian Scholz's early goal. Overall, they have been performing well, and these players may well see first team football in the next few years.
There are screenshots of these key prospects below.

With January coming up, we may well dip our feet into the water in order to bolster our bid for the Premiership and Champions League. But we can go into 2010 on the back of some fantastic results, with the 3-1 victory at Manchester United and the last gasp goals against Tottenham and Arsenal springing to mind. Make sure you keep following as we push forward on three fronts, starting with the FA Cup against Swansea.

Chelsea 3 - 0 Swansea
FA Cup 3rd Round
zhirkov-chelsea415.jpg

Chelsea put on a scintillating first half display to demolish Swansea City at Stamford Bridge today, and it also saw a man of the match performance from Zhirkov, for once starting on his favoured left wing.

Chelsea took the lead early on when Zhirkov drove down the left wing before dropping the ball back into the middle, where Essien collected to strike into the roof of the net for 1-0.

And John Terry made it 2-0 minutes later, when he headed in Zhirkov's brilliant free kick, before Ashley Cole got on the end of Michael Ballack's through ball to seal the win for Chelsea. The second half was a dull affair, as Chelsea passed Swansea to death, but without making any real clear cut chances.

Chelsea make the 4th round of the FA Cup without trouble, and the covincing fashion in which they achieved this must surely please the Chelsea manager.

good to see that your team is back on track, the win over arsenal may be an important one as the league table seems to be quite balanced. Who do you tend to play with Ba upfront? goals/game for Drogba is good, Anelka on the other hand doesn´t seem to be doing as good as i remember him from my save :( that is if you´re playing him as striker.

leedsunited - we could have won by more, and again we were giving them a pounding, but I'm happy with 3-0 really, it's a good result.
chelseafan - thankyou :) glad you're enjoying it and I'm using Tug's Training 2008, which is the one I have always used on fm.
phil06 -yeah the league is very close indeed, and that win against Arsenal was so important, I was ecstatic when kalou scored. When Ba's in form I tend to play him as an attacking striker and Anelka behind him, and don't dis Anelka, he might not be scoring but he's got the most assists in my team! that's because he plays deeper and brings other players in to play. I played Ba with Drogba against Fulham which also worked.
Arron_FM - sure thing, I'll post it with this.

CHELSEA DRAW WEST BROM IN THE FA CUP 4TH ROUND

Chelsea have a chance to take revenge on West Brom in the FA Cup after they knocked them out of the Carling Cup. The game is at the Hawthorns on the 23rd January.

FABIO BORINI MOVES TO ASTON VILLA FOR 1.1M

Chelsea's reserve star of last campaign has made a 1.1m move to Aston Villa this transfer window in search of more games.

"I am delighted to move to Aston Villa as I know that Martin O'Neill has a very good reputation in England for his work with young players and I hope to develop well there. I am sad to leave Chelsea but I feel I need more games to improve as a player."

FLORENT MALOUDA MAKES 10m MOVE TO REAL MADRID

After three years at Stamford Bridge, Florent Malouda has been lured away by Spanish side Real Madrid as they look to win La Liga. Malouda played 61 games for Chelsea and scored 9 goals, and he enjoyed a fairly successful period at the club, but will now look to take his talent to the Spanish league for the first time.

Portsmouth 0 - 3 Chelsea
439x.jpg

Chelsea dominated today, and we'll be very happy with their performance at Fratton Park as they put three excellent goals past, as Portsmouth edge towards the drop zone.

It was the final game before the African Cup of Nations and Didier Drogba made the most of it by putting Chelsea ahead early on when Rodwell sent him clear, by passing a nice finish past David James.

And despite some wonderful football, we had to wait until the second half, and the introduction of Joe Cole for the goals to start flowing again.

Joe Cole was busy from the off, playing in Salomon Kalou for a good chance early in the second half, but David James made a good save.

And on the hour mark, after some good interchanging between Chelsea's midfield men, Bosingwa swung a bull towards Cole, whose first touch was excellent, and then he guided it right under David James with an excellent finish.

Salomon Kalou then made the most of a dreadful pass back from Yebda to round David James and score a well deserved third goal.

Chelsea haven't won by more than 3 in a game since the match against Burnley in September, so it was a confidence booster, but also a very nice performance to watch.

good game against pompy and are looking to bring anyone in because of the african cup of nations

i might be late, but why do you need a new right back, dont you have bosingwa?

CHELSEA COMPLETE THE SIGNING OF UDINESE STRIKER ALEXIS SANCHEZ

610x.jpg

Chelsea have today brought in a new striker in the shape of Alexis Sanchez. This transfer comes just in time for the African Cup of Nations and could be vital to Chelsea's success in this period.

Sanchez has become well known in Italy since his move from River Plate 3 years ago. He is a very pacy winger, who is excellent on the ball, and is known to be a bit of a flair player too.

His work permit has been cleared to play against Sunderland this weekend.

yes I do have bosingwa, but I wanted a second choice, because after that it's ivanovic, and he's not the best attacking full back.
and cheers leedsunited, I certainly hope he does. Hope it also answers your previous question :)

Chelsea 2 - 0 Sunderland
610x.jpg

Chelsea's first game without the African players was a very strong performance against struggling Sunderland, and it also saw the debut of youngster Alexis Sanchez.

He started up front with Demba Ba, and the two linked up very well in the early stages, playing each other into space, and with a bit more composure, Sanchez would have put Chelsea ahead.

But with 10 minutes until half time, Ba dropped the ball back into Lampard, who sent a first time ball up to Sanchez who had made the run, to then pass into the back of the net for a goal on his debut.

And minutes later, his strike partner Demba Ba was scoring a brilliant goal himself. Played through after some brilliant football from Chelsea, he controlled the ball nicely, before dinking the ball expertly over the onrushing Fulop.

In the second half, Chelsea might have doubled their lead on a couple of occassions when Zhirkov hit a couple of screamers, but they both smashed off the woodwork.

And substitute Deco could have scored late on, but Fulop made a brilliant double save to deny him, and keep Chelsea at 2.

But they would have been delighted with that result anyway, no doubt, and it keeps them on a very impressive run in the Premier League, and they remain top of the table, 1 point ahead of Manchester City.

MALOUDA FAILS TO AGREE TERMS WITH REAL MADRID

Despite the announcement that Malouda was set to sign for Real Madrid, he has since decided that he was unhappy with the settlements of the contract and negotiations have broken down.

Malouda instead agreed a 10m move to Valencia in Spain.
