Newcastle vs. Chelsea
St. James' Park, Newcastle
FA Cup 5th Round, 17:45 KO

Live Text Commentary

17:09: Chelsea play Newcastle in the 5th round today after beating Swansea and West Brom to get here. Newcastle will have their work cut out, but they cannot be underestimated, as they are top of the Championship and well on course to getting promoted back to the Premiership this season.
17:18: The Blues welcome back their African players today. 2 played a part in that Wigan game, Mikel and Kalou, but Drogba starts today after having a few days to recover from the final.
17:26: Chelsea's team is a strong one today, they aren't taking any risks, but will also have to be wary of their Champions League fixture next week.
Chelsea: Cech, Bosingwa, Zhirkov, Alex, Terry, Mikel, Essien, Lampard, Ballack, Drogba, Anelka
17:45: We're underway at St. James' Park. It's interesting to note that Chelsea have played a couple of games here in the past 5 years and gone on to win the tournament, such as the Carling Cup in 2005 and 2007.
17:48: Bosingwa's gone down with an injury and been taken off the pitch. Newcastle power on anyway and Nolan goes close.
17:54: Newcastle are being spurned on by their crowd here, and Jonas wins them a corner, but Cech catches it simply.
17:57: OOF, have some of that! French striker Nfliore hits a belter on the turn, but he hits the crossbar. Newcastle getting close here!
18:09: Newcastle continue to press but Ryan Taylor hits his shot well wide.
18:17: Barton has a free-kick in a very good position but he hits it woefully wide. They need to take one of these chances.
18:19: Chelsea nearly punish them there! Their first good move of the game, Lampard and Ballack switch down the left hand side, before playing the ball across the goal, where it's flicked on by Drogba to Bosingwa who has practically an empty goal, but hits it just past the past.
18:30: HALF TIME Newcastle 0 - 0 Chelsea That's the half-way point, and Newcastle have been the better of the two teams, Chelsea need to do something to turn the tide.
18:46: We return to the second half with one change, Nicolas Anelka coming off for returning Argentinian Franco di Santo.
18:47: Ooh lovely stuff from the youngster. He is played in, and ***** the ball over the oncoming Glauber, before coolly sliding in Drogba, but his first time shot is well saved by Harper.
18:59: Aghh, a bit more composure and that's 1-0 to Newcastle, Guthrie plays in Ameobi, but he can't find a finish going in one-on-one with Cech.
19:09: Ballack makes way for Gael Kakuta.
19:21: Chelsea make another substitution, Sanchez coming on for Drogba, who has done very little for Chelsea in this game.
19:26: Shola Ameobi gets space on the right again, but shoots instead of crossing, and the attack breaks down prematurely.
19:30: 2 minutes of injury time.
19:34: GOAL Newcastle 0 - 1 Chelsea GOOOOAAAALLL!! That's what FA Cup football is all about, it doesn't get much later than that. Injury time is extended due to an injury to Gael Kakuta, but Chelsea recover, and Alex plays a wonderful long ball wide to Sanchez, who passes the ball into the middle of the box, where no one is marking di Santo, and he has the easiest job to tap home
19:36: FULL TIME Newcastle 0 - 1 Chelsea Chelsea scrape through to the 6th Round of the Cup thanks to Franco di Santo and his first goal for the club, but they were pretty dissapointing. Not sure the manager will care after that late goal from his substitution.
chelsea-27709-313.jpg

Chelsea players and staff rush to congratulate Franco di Santo on his vital first goal for the club.

cheers joe, didn't want to write a story if all I was going to do was give lists of results, wanted to make sure people could enjoy it, so I'm glad you're doing so.
leedsunited, I'll be reading it no worries. and yeah results really are improving, if you look back to december.. I was getting so frustrated back then ha.
and good to see you back oakesypvfc. yeahh we're on course, but there's a few tough games to go yet, such as Tottenham, Villa and Man City.

Keep following as Chelsea are re-united with Jose Mourinho in the 1st Knockout Round of the Champions League.

SAM ILLYROY TAKES CAMEROON JOB
cameroon_flag.gif

Chelsea manager Sam Illyroy today officially accepted the position as Head Coach of the Cameroonian football team, after Paul Le Guen was relinquished of his duties following a poor African Cup of Nations performance.

He it tasked with ensuring they put in a good performance during this summer's World Cup in South Africa, after they qualified.

Their group consists of Spain, Costa Rica and the Czech Republic and will be no easy task to get through.

Good luck, just managed Algeria in the world cup in my game. Its really fun doing it with a underdog, I cam so close to qualifying from my group aswell, jammy Ellmander with a 86th min goal. Good luck with Cameroon you have some quality players like Jean Makoun (I think) and Samuel Eto.

seeing a lot of people reading but not commenting, please leave a commentt

Mate id kill for my story to have half popularity of your thread lol. Well done keep up the good work samillyroy! I like your layout ;)

I managed Ivory Coast to the semi finals only to be done by a 90th minute goal by Henry! See if you can go one further!

good to see that you have a run with positive results, hope it´ll keep that way against inter :)
nice one with the cameroon job, didn´t see that one coming lol. Goodluck with those as well, personally i cba to take the national team jobs... anyhow the team is decent, but only Eto´o really stands out imo, he´s quite good as poacher.

Inter Milan vs. Chelsea
Giuseppe Meazza, Milan (Italy)
UEFA Champions League 2nd Round 1st Leg, 19:45 KO

Live Text Commentary

19:06: This is the game everyone in Europe has been looking forward to. Chelsea face Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan for the first time since he departed 3 years ago.
19:16: Chelsea are without Mikel, who will be out until the weekend with a sprained wrist suffered against Newcastle. We'll see soon who will replace him. On that note, Chelsea have drawn either Liverpool or Sheffield United in the sixth round of the FA Cup.
19:28: Chelsea's squad is in, and it's an interesting one. They've gone 4-3-3, and that will most likely be a defensive formation, as they look to hold off a strong Inter side. They are currently 2nd in Serie A, 4 points behind leaders Juventus.
Chelsea: Cech, Bosingwa, A. Cole, Terry, Carvalho, Essien, Lampard, Ballack, Zhirkov, Sanchez, Drogba
19:35: And the teams are out on the pitch, as Mourinho and Illyroy shake hands. He proceeds to his seat on the sidelines.
mourinho10_116922t.jpg

19:45: We're off, and it's a cold night tonight in Milan. Most of the Chelsea players are wearing gloves.
19:46: GOAL Inter Milan 1 - 0 Chelsea Nightmare start for the Blues, and it's the simplest of goals. Vieira's free kick is played to Maicon who passes a simple ball behind the defence which Milito latches on to to tuck past Cech. First time in 12 games that the big Czech Republic goalkeeper has conceded.
19:54: Balotelli goes close to making that 2-0. Chelsea all over the place here. Milito is put in again, but this time Czech saves, only to see his parry go straight to Balotelli, but Bosingwa saves it on the line, clearing it for a corner.
20:04: Chelsea look like they're on their first attack of the game as Drogba plays it in, but Cesar boots it up to Milito and Inter are away. His shot hits the post and is cleared. He's causing Chelsea all sorts of problems at the moment.
20:09: Vieira makes himself known hitting a lovely shot towards goal, and Cech has to stretch to tip it over.
20:20: Drogba sees yellow after diving in the box. Chelsea aren't going to get anywhere like that.
20:27: Oof that's better. Carvalho plays in Sanchez on the right wing, and his cross is excellent. Lampard meets it but Cesar makes a very good save.
20:30: HALF TIME Inter 1 - 0 Chelsea Could be more than 1-0, but Chelsea have a chance to regroup now. They'll have to improve a lot if they want to get something from the game.
20:45: Chelsea pull Sanchez off for Nicolas Anelka, their top goalscorer in the Champions League and we're off again.
20:52: Milito heads a corner cleverly on at the near post, but Cech reacts well to fist clear. Lucio gets himself a yellow card for fouling Anelka.
21:00: Deco replaces Michael Ballack.
21:07: Ooohhh and it's another fine save from Cesar, he's having a wonderful game. Zhirkov's free-kicks are Chelsea's biggest threat and Carvalho heads it on well, but Cesar reacts nicely.
21:09: Kalou replaces Ashley Cole.
21:19: Inter could have won there. Marko Arnautovic is played in wonderfully by Diego Milito, but he hits his shot at Cech.
21:30: Aghhh what a chance, and he should have scored. He really should have scored. Drogba is in one on one with Cesar, and you'd bet any kind of money he would score there, but he fluffs it and Cesar saves well.
21:34: FULL TIME Inter 1 - 0 Chelsea Now all the pressure is on Chelsea for the second leg. Unable to score away from home, and a goal down, they have to make sure they don't concede in the second leg. Elsewhere, there was an extraordinary win for Barcelona, despite going down to 10 men, and the winner came from former Arsenal man Thierry Henry. And that's it from the Meazze.
blogimg_5295_73757-20090830125832514923.jpg

Milito celebrates scoring Inter's winner.

aghh, we were rubbish. We've got to really go at them at home, but I'm wary we need to be solid defensively as well. That's gonna be a really good game.
shootie, yeah sorry mate I suppose I took you all for granted ;) glad to see you're enjoying it. Yeah thought I would take it after seeing the job open up, cos I want something to do in the summer :) Also, if I become friends with Sammy Eto'o, I might be able to bring him in :D but yeah, a good few players, also rate their centre back N'Koulou I think his name is. Moved to Barca on my game, and he's a wonderful talent.
oakesypvfc - ill be tryin my best, but don't hold your breath. semi-finals is brilliant, but I don't have the kind of players ivory coast have. that's still a fantastic achievement though mate.
phil06 - you spoke too soon! well it broke our fantastic loss but hopefully we can pick things up in the premiership at the weekend and then give theem some s**t back at Stamford Bridge.

keep reading, it's just starting to get exciting ;)

Its all good man :), Grrr I hate Inter so much, I finished on 91 points in my game, would of won any other league but Inter are a machine. Finished on 98 points they did.

Hammered them 5-1 in the cup tho :D .All you got to do is surround their 4-3-1-2 and exploit its narrowness and make sure their wing backs are closed down and AM is tight marked. Your diamond is a nice formation to play against it, but you probably play attacking wing backs which would of played into their hands. And seeing as it was Maicon who assisted the goal, you musnt of seen the thread of their full-backs. He rampaged up the field and scored against me too :(.

Unlucky though and as you say, its getting exciting :D

oohh. tactics :)
I could do with some.
no I didn't play 4-1-2-1-2, I went for 4-3-3 in this game because I thought that I could get Sanchez past their full-backs, but he wasn't very good lol.
do you think I should go with the diamond next game, an d maybe play ivanovic right-back? I think he's more solid defensively.

Aston Villa 0 - 2 Chelsea
Aston+Villa+v+Chelsea+Premier+League+Wq-dPFsa1Akl.jpg

Chelsea put in a wonderful performance at Villa Park today, totally dominating a side who are 6th in the league and pushing for a Champions League spot.

They started well with Deco finally showing glimpses of his early season form, playing Anelka and Drogba in time after time, but their lack of goals was more down to some excellent goalkeeping rather than poor finishing.

And Carvalho went very close, coming in at the back stick with a powerful header, but Friedel read it well to deny him.

There was no doubt in anyones mind that the goal was coming however, and it was a very well crafted one. Drogba held up the ball in the left corner, before beating Collins to cross a wonderful ball into the 6 yard box, where Anelka arrived late to head past a dumbfounded Friedel.

And despite more increased pressure in the second half, Chelsea couldn't get that second goal. None of the travelling Chelsea fans looked particularly nervous though as their team passed their way around Aston Villa, only to run into brick walls at the end of their attacks.

But Drogba got the goal he more than deserved deep into injury time, heading home Bosingwa's cross to make the scoreline reflect the game more.

Things are looking rosy for Chelsea now, as Manchester City dropped two more points against Arsenal at the Emirates, meaning that they are now 5 points behind the Blues.

In the FA Cup, Chelsea will play Liverpool, after they knocked out Sheffield United in the 5th Round Replay.

I played a wide diamond vs them, forcing their MCR and MCL out wide leaving Cambiasso isloated and vunerable in the middle. Had thier AM Snijder ( I Know bad spelling ) tight marked with Palombo. While My AM Montolivo took Cambaisso apart. What you really need to do is close their full backs down, as that where their midfielders pass to ALOT and its where they retain posession. Look at the stats of your game, I bet Maicon and Chivu had alot of passes attempted.

Mourinho reverts to his old trusted 4-3-3 alot, he did so midway through the 2nd half. So I switched to my default 4-2-3-1 and tight marked their lone ST. Saw out the game comfotably.

Just saw your post in my topic. Sent you PM :D. Always like to help a fellow FM'er especially to beat them gits Inter.

Nice result vs Villa btw.

Chelsea 4 - 0 Wolves
Chelsea+v+Hull+City+Premier+League+LGrYk9A8LcGl.jpg

Chelsea beat bottom-of-the table Wolves in very convincing fashion, with Didier Drogba truly returning to goalscoring form, and at this rate, he will no doubt pip Demba Ba to top goalscorer.

Chelsea began as they meant to go on, scoring with quarter of an hour on the clock. Lampard played Drogba in up top, and he held off the challenge of Zubar to slide home a wonderful finish past Hennessey.

And before long he was in again, this time scoring a less classy goal but a goal nonetheless. Deco swung in a wonderful corner which Carvalho met strongly, but it hit the bar. Essien swung at the rebound and hit Drogba's leg to go in.

In the second half, the quiet Nicolas Anelka was replaced by Salomon Kalou and he laid Drogba off to seal his hat-trick. Similarly to the first goal, he was played in and comfortably hit it on the half volley underneath the body of Hennessey.

And Kalou wrapped things up in clinical fashion, hitting a wonderful strike right off the crossbar and into the back of the net.

It's a wonderful run that Chelsea are on, but it's Liverpool in the FA Cup 5th Round next, before a game against Inter Milan in the Champions League, and it doesn't get bigger than that.

February Awards in the FA Premier League

Sam Illyroy won his fourth Manager of the Month award after guiding Chelsea to 3 impressive league victories and a draw at Old Trafford against Manchester United. They are 7 points clear in the Premier League with 9 games to go, and are odds on favourites to clinch this years title.

Chelsea 0 - 0 Manchester United
Chelsea 2 - 0 Wigan
Chelsea 2 - 0 Aston Villa
Chelsea 4 - 0 Wolves

It's another month without conceding, and that is no mean feat. Chelsea boast the greatest defensive record in the Premiership now, conceding only 15 goals.

David Moyes of Everton was in second place, with Rafa Benitez coming in third.

---------- Post added at 11:00 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:00 PM ----------

think that picture of Drogba just about summed it up. He's such a legend.

lol Drogba *bow* (from a QPR fan, that is high praise)

Eagerly awaiting to see if my help has been effective for you, cant wait untill the Inter match report. Although then again if you lose im going to feel so bad because I cost you a place in the champions league Quater Finals lol.

not at all mate, you won't have to feel guilty, because it would have been my decision to follow your advice.
