West Brom 0 - 0 Chelsea
FA Cup 4th Round
kakuta.jpg

Chelsea's Hawthorn curse continued today, but it was more an unlucky game than last time, as Chelsea dominated start to finish, with West Brom rarely threatening.

Alexis Sanchez, Chelsea's newest signing, injured himself whilst shooting early on and had to be replaced by Nicolas Anelka, but the new addition could do little to boost Chelsea's firepower.

Lampard played a number of very nice balls through to the front men, but either their finishing was poor, or Carson was there to make a very good save.

Joe Cole was dissapointing compared to recent fixtures, and will want to improve against Burnley in mid-week, after he was replaced by Kakuta towards the end.

And despite Kakuta's very best effort, creating a number of chances, Chelsea couldn't find that important goal, and this game will go to a replay at Stamford Bridge, not what Chelsea need next month, with tough fixtures against Manchester United, Liverpool and Inter Milan already to be played.

CHELSEA OR WEST BROM WILL PLAY NEWCASTLE UNITED IN THE 5TH ROUND OF THE FA CUP

If Chelsea can beat West Brom at Stamford Bridge next month they would face promotion favourites Newcastle United at St. James' Park.

Burnley 0 - 1 Chelsea
johnterryEPA_450x300.jpg

Chelsea left it late today against a surprisingly impressive Burnley side, and just managed to edge the encounter.

Ba and Sanchez didn't connect as well as the game against Sunderland, and Sanchez was constantly beaten in the air by an inspired Clarke Carlisle, as Chelsea began to get frustrated.

They did make a number of chances and half-chances, but the finishing was very poor throughout, with Ba guilty of missing a number of very good chances.

But in the 81st minute, Terry rose up to meet a Frank Lampard corner and send Chelsea home with all 3 points. With Manchester City also winning against bottom side Wolves, the pressure is on at the top of the league, and this weekends live game against Liverpool has that little bit more to it now.

Unlucky v West Brom mate, got usual bit of Chelsea luck against Burnley with late goals lol but youre doing well! Keep it up!

There is a big double update on my Vale coming up if you fancy a read!

Chelsea vs. Liverpool
Stamford Bridge, London
FA Premier League, KO 16:00

Last Meeting: Liverpool 2 - 0 Chelsea

Live Text Commentary

15:04: Last time these two teams met, Sam Illyroy suffered his first ever defeat as Chelsea manager. It'll be interesting to see how they've progressed since then.
15:10: African Cup of Nations info in, and Drogba has sent the Ivory Coast into the knock-out rounds with a wonder-goal against Algeria, whilst Essien's Ghana beat Tunisia to qualify.
15:17: Back to this afternoons game, and Chelsea have gone with a 4-3-3 for this one, with Alexis Sanchez moving out onto the wing. It's also interesting to know that Manchester City play Bolton this afternoon, and we'll give updates on that game as well.
15:23: Chelsea's squad is out:
Chelsea: Cech, Bosingwa, A. Cole, Terry, Carvalho, Rodwell, Lampard, Ballack, Zhirkov, Sanchez, Ba
It's a strong team, and it's good to see Zhirkov back in the side, he was in great form in early January. Liverpool are without Torres today, and start with Kuyt up front.
16:00: And we're off at Stamford Bridge. Should be a good 'un.
16:07: Gerrard with the first shot of the game, hitting a nice effort, but Cech parries it to safety.
16:09: Ohhh fine save from Pepe Reina, Sanchez curls in a delightful ball for Zhirkov to meet with a header, but Reina reacts brilliantly to punch it clear.
16:12: Great work from Sanchez, playing in a wonderful ball for Ba, who hits it from an angle, but Reina has his post covered.
21:21: Zhirkov plays in a great free kick, but Lampard doesn't get the right header on it.
21:25: Liverpool counter from a Chelsea corner, and Gerrard and Benayoun both go close, but Cech saves for a corner.
moz-screenshot-2.jpg
21:29: Kuyt is in behind the Chelsea defence but his shot is poor. He should have done better there.
16:41: Fine effort from Gerrard, he hits a long range shot, but it smashes off Cech's crossbar.
16:45: HALF TIME Chelsea 0 - 0 Liverpool It's all level here, and it's quite an even game, with neither team having any real clear cut chances, although Kuyt maybe should have scored for Liverpool. Bolton are holding Manchester City at the City of Manchester Stadium.
17:00: Second half here.
17:07: Liverpool with the first chance of the half, but Benayoun can't get it on target.
17:13: GOAL Chelsea 1 - 0 Liverpool Get in! Sanchez is giving Fabio Aurelio a torrid time there down on that right-wing. He gets the better of him not once, not twice, but three times before playing a wonderful ball in from the wing which Lampard arrives late to head home.
17:20: RED CARD And he can't have any complaints about that one. Kuyt's running in on a counter-attack and Ricardo Carvalho goes in horribly late from behind and the referee has sent him off. Chelsea down to ten men with 25 minutes to go. Ivanovic replaces Jack Rodwell.
17:23: Lampard should have scored anyway. Ba hits a nice shot, and Lampard comes in on the rebound with Reina on the floor and passes instead of shooting. Should be 2-0.
17:36: Anelka's on for Ba, and Ivanovic just missed a free header in the box. Bolton have taken the lead against City and it's Chris Basham.
17:42: Kuyt goes close. He jumps up with Cech, but the keeper does brilliantly to punch it over his bar.
17:45: Kakuta comes on for the injured Ashley Cole.
17:48: We're into the 4th minute out of 3 in injury time, and Chelsea are keeping it in Liverpool's corner.
17:50: FULL TIME Chelsea 1 - 0 Liverpool Chelsea have done it, and they've gotten revenge over Liverpool for that defeat early on in the season, and it's come courtesy of a brilliant Frank Lampard header. Manchester City equalised late on through Micah Richards, but Chelsea do go 3 points clear at the top of the league with Manchester United to play next.

CHELSEA MANAGER SCOOPS JANUARY AWARD

Sam Illyroy wins his third manager of the month after guiding Chelsea to wins in every Premier League game this month, without conceding.

Chelsea 3 - 0 Portsmouth
Chelsea 2 - 0 Sunderland
Chelsea 1 - 0 Burnley
Chelsea 1 - 0 Liverpool

Manchester City's Mark Hughes came second, with Harry Redknapp of Tottenham in third.

Well we'll see how it works out in the end, but he was constantly saying he wanted to move to Spain, so I let it happen for him. We'll find replacements, and I have a lot of youth players coming through in that position, so I'm happy to see them take that role. Also, Sanchez, Ba, Kalou, Kakuta and Joe Cole can all play left wing so 10m was a good deal imo. I'll be checkin your update out mate :)

fair enough. 10 million is a good amount of money for him

i have just put up my transfers and pre season for you

Chelsea 2 - 0 West Brom
FA Cup 4th Round
anelka415.jpg

Chelsea finally saw off West Brom today, and as it turned out it was an all too easy affair.

West Brom spent almost all of the first half in their own half as Chelsea passed the ball around them. Juliano Belletti had an impressive game, dictating the tempo from his orle in front of the defence.

But Carson was having a wonderful game, making saves from everywhere. Sturridge did very well on 20 minutes to open up space, and hit a lovely effort, but Carson did very well to save it.

Chelsea continued to carve out chances, but West Brom held firm until the 43rd minute when Nicolas Anelka scored a wonderful goal, blasting into the roof of the net from 30 yards.

In the second half, Chelsea continued in the same fashion, pushing on for that vital second goal. And Zhirkov went very close on 55 minutes, getting a touch on a brilliant Rodwell cross, but it clipped the post and went wide.

With an hour on the clock, the manager made a triple substitution to rest key players for this weekend's game against Manchester United. Bosingwa, Deco and Lampard all made their way to the bench to be replaced by Joe Cole, Kakuta and Makelele.

And it was the youngster who doubled Chelsea's advantage hitting a peach of a shot from outside the box, following a corner, and it was his second goal for the club in a dream debut season with the first team.

Chelsea will play Newcastle United now in the next round, but all eyes will be on them this week as they face Manchester United on Saturday, before travelling to the San Siro to play Inter Milan in the Champions League the following Tuesday.

CHELSEA SET NEW DEFENSIVE RECORD OF 8 GAMES WITHOUT CONCEDING

Chelsea have set this new defensive record on a run of 8 very impressive games, and with things looking dire in December, the tables have turned and it simply remains to be seen how long Chelsea can keep up with this.

AFRICAN CUP OF NATIONS REVIEW

Semi-Finals
Nigeria 0 - 1 Ghana
Mikel and Essien went head to head in this game, but it was Essien's Ghana who led his team to victory, and qualification to the final of the African Cup of Nations was secured. Mikel will return after their 3rd/4th place play-off.

Cote d'Ivoire 1 - 0 Tunisia
It took an own goal in the tenth minute to book their place in the final but it will be Drogba vs. Essien in the African Cup of Nations final this year, in the run up to the World Cup Finals.

Manchester United vs. Chelsea
Old Trafford, Manchester
FA Premier League, KO 12:45

Live Text Commentary

12:18:
Chelsea in good form, and off the back of 7 successive league wins, they'll be in confident mood, and they're playing against a Manchester United side who have been very dissapointing, lying in 8th place in the table. That makes this game by no means an easy one, and Chelsea will have to be at their best to see them off.
12:26: Chelsea return to the 4-3-3 after playing 4-1-2-1-2 against West Brom. Anelka starts after his great performance against West Brom, and his first goal in 13 hours!
Chelsea: Cech, Bosingwa, A. Cole, Terry, Carvalho, Makelele, Lampard, Ballack, Sanchez, Zhirkov, Anelka
12:45: We are off at Old Trafford. This is a game to keep your eyes on.
12:49: Four minutes in, and Manchester United are starting well. They'll need to be if they're going to make a late resurgance to the top.
12:53: Well we've seen very little of him this season, but that would have been a way to get off the mark. Michael Ballack curls a wonderful volley goalwards but van der Sar makes a top save to deny him.
13:10: Alexis Sanchez pulls away to the right hand side before chipping in a ball goalwards, but it's headed out. Lampard hits it back in but it's blocked only as far as Ashley Cole, but his fierce shot is well parried by van der Sar.
13:16: Man United are starting to settle here, playing some nice passes around. Scholes plays Macheda in, but he's offside.
13:30: HALF TIME Manchester United 0 - 0 Chelsea All square at half time, but Man United starting to edge it towards the end there. Lack of firepower up front for Chelsea.
13:45: Underway again, and Demba Ba is replacing Anelka. Need someone strong and powerful up front, because Anelka was starting to look a bit isolated up there.
13:56: Chelsea pressure, but there not getting any chances away. Bit of a boring game this.
14:12: Gael Kakuta replaces Yury Zhirkov on that left wing.
14:15: Lampard sums the game up by slamming a shot miles over the bar.
14:20: Sanchez goes wide and plays the ball into Ba, but by the time he turns to goal, he is under pressure, and hits it straight at van der Sar.
14:31: FULL TIME Manchester United 0 - 0 Chelsea And what a boring game. Chelsea rarely fail to score, but they've not conceded again and remain top of the league. But Manchester City have a chance to close the gap to a point again here. Join us for Inter Milan next week.

Ricardo Carvalho got man of the match at Old Trafford today after bossing United's frontline, but the men at the top couldn't make the difference.

AFRICAN CUP OF NATIONS FINAL
Ivory Coast 1 - 0 Ghana
_44371210_kalou2_afp300.jpg

It was a close game in Luanda, Angola today as the Ivory Coast overcame stern opposition in Michael Essien's Ghana.

And Ghana will feel agrieved not to have won, after dominating for the first hour or so, with Sulley Muntari really driving the team forward, but they would were unable to find any real cutting edge.

Salomon Kalou was the man to make the difference though in the second half, coming off the bench and looking very lively. His first touch played a superb through ball to Zezeto, but he couldn't find a finish.

But in the 70th minute, Eboue swung a brilliant cross into the box, and Kalou dived ahead of his marker and goalkeeper to win the African Cup of Nations for the Ivory Coast.

Essien, Kalou, Drogba and Essien will now return to England, and Drogba and Kalou will want to do everything they can to now win some domestic silverware.

at least one of ur players won the africa cup of nations..... and i bet ur happy u will get them back

Chelsea 2 - 0 Wigan
michael-ballack-2009-8-29-10-41-51.jpg

Chelsea ran out comfortable winners on a day Manchester City dropped points at Fulham, putting Chelsea's lead back to 3 points.

Chelsea piled on pressure from the beginning and it didn't take long for them to take the lead. Joe Cole played Bosingwa in on the right wing for him to cross in and Demba Ba headed in for his 15th goal of the season.

And Chelsea continued to pressure and look for more goals, with Joe Cole causing all sorts of problems for Wigan.

Wigan kept it at 1-0 until half-time, but Chelsea then made 2 substitutions, bringing on Rodwell and Zhirkov, pushing Ballack up the pitch.

Zhirkov had a brilliant game, tearing up the left hand side of the pitch, playing in ball after ball, but Ba wasted a number of good opportunities that might have made the scoreline even greater.

And it was he who took the corner for Chelsea's second, laying it off to Ballack who hit a screamer from outside the box which hit the post before hitting Kirkland's back and going in. Ballack tried to claim it, but it will go down as own goal.

But he won't really care, as Chelsea now sit 3 points clear at the top of the league, and with a 5th Round FA Cup match against Newcastle in wait this weekend.

two players actually leedsunited, Drogba and Kalou :)
