CAN LIVERPOOL DEFEND THEIR TITLE FOR THE THIRD YEAR RUNNING?
I DON'T THINK SO

By Gary Neville

Liverpool have done the opposite of what they've normally done under John Aldridge, all they've done is sell.

The league season starts in a few days (Liverpool lost to Manchester City in the Charity Shield), and they have only signed two players, young French player Giles Brunel for £7.75m from French giants Olympique Lyon, yes the Frenchman has huge potential, and can play anywhere in the spine of a team, and Italian ex-Juventus youngster, Antonio Cavallaro on a free transfer, the striker may show that he's a bargain, but not at the moment.

The Reds have only spent £7.75m in this window, however they've sold £50m worth of players. The first to go was part of the so-called "Dynamic Duo" whom Aldridge signed from Tottenham, ex-Manchester City defender Micah Richards left for £10m and went to ex-North London rivals Arsenal, after making just 7 appearances for Liverpool. The second player to leave Anfield was young Danish centre-half, Jores Okore, who was signed for £15m in last seasons window from Inter Milan. Youngster, and key player in Aldridge's Europa League campaigns, Adam Morgan, left to go to Southampton for £5m, another player to leave was Hungarian Balasz Dzsudzsak for £5m, the winger signed on a free transfer in January, however a bad injury hindered his Anfield career, forcing Liverpool into selling him to Newcastle United. Another player to go was fringe striker Daniel Sturridge, to Swansea City for £5m, the Englishman barely played under Aldridge, and Swansea met the asking price. The other player to leave was Oussama Assaidi for PSV Eindhoven for £5m, rounding off the £50m.

Liverpool have left themselves needing to bulk up their squad, immediately, or they could face losing their Premier crown.

Hmm think welbeck can score, always does against me so if you can fetch 50-70m I would sell

BENDER AND FALCAO LEAVE REDS
View attachment 374104View attachment 374105

Both Radamel Falcao and Sven Bender have left Liverpool for Spanish giants Real Madrid today for a combined fee of £45m.

German international Bender, 27, announced his intentions to leave Liverpool at the end of the season under the bosman ruling as his contract was due to end, so manager John Aldridge decided to cash in on the ex-Dortmund midfielder, selling him on for £20m, Bender made 116 appearances for Liverpool and was a fans favourite at the club, leading to Kopites labelling him "The German Gerrard". Sven Bender won eight competitions for The Reds, among them were two Premier League titles.

Another player to leave Anfield was club icon Radamel Falcao. The thirty-year-old also left for Real Madrid for his second spell in the city, as he joined Liverpool from Real's rivals Atletico for £26.5m in July 2013 and went on to make 116 appearances for Liverpool scoring 84 goals in the process, however John Aldridge felt that, at 30-years-old, the Colombian was to old to be effective for the team in the long-term and could hinder youngster Bradley Wilde's progress.

REDS SPLASH THE CASH

Liverpool have the splashed the cash on four new signings in the January transfer market.

The Reds saw influential pair Sven Bender and Radamel Falcao leave the club in this window, and with the fixtures beginning to pile up, manager John Aldridge saw fit to add depth to a small squad.

He began his spree by taking the attacking pair Santi Cazorla and Theo Walcott of Arsenal's hands for a combined fee of £17.35m, Cazorla cosint £4.6m and Walcott costing £12.75m. Spanish winger Cazorla expressed his delight at signing for the champions saying "Liverpool are a top, top club and I look forward to my first match and to make The Kop happy", Englishman Theo Walcott was also happy at signing on the dotted line saying "Liverpool are one of those clubs that you aspire to play for when you're a young lad, they are one of the most iconic clubs in the world alongside Real Madrid and Juventus".
View attachment 374129View attachment 374130

Liverpool also added some defensive strength, signing defence-minded midfielder Mario Suarez from Atletico Madrid for £10m, it is thought that he will play back-up to Welsh pair Aaron Ramsey and Joe Allen, Suarez made 199 appearances for Madrid's second club and was a role model for many young Atletico fans.
View attachment 374131

They also added steel in the centre of defence as Dede began making noises of returning to Vasco, and Liverpool began to look to the future with the £20m signing of Italian centre-back Daniele Rugani from AFC Fiorentina, the 22-year-old is widely regarded as a potential "World Defender of the Year" winner in his later years.
