Final day nerves...
It’s the final day of the 2013 Russian season and the big games today involve Rubin Kazan and Zenit St Petersburg as they fight it out for second place and the chance to appear in the 2014/15 Champions League.

Rubin face Spartak Moscow at home knowing that a win will confirm them in second place. A draw won’t be enough if Zenit beat Ural at the Gazprom Arena, St Petersburg.

1 min
What a start for Rubin Kazan as the recalled Lacina Traore scores the quickest goal in Russian Premier Division history. From the kick off Arshavin collects the ball and plays a one-two with Gia Grigalava, cutting inside Arshavin plays a defence splitting pass to Traore who places his shot under the keeper with just 19 seconds on the clock!

4 mins
Traore plays the ball in front of Mario Acosta who makes a well timed run from deep. Spartak goalkeeper makes a finger tip save from Acosta’s shot to prevent a second early Rubin goal.

9 mins
Rubin are on the attack once more as Anton Putsilo surges into the box, he skips past Martin Jiranek’s challenge but is brought down by Brazilian Arouca and the referee points to the spot. Putsilo dusts himself off and steps up to take the spotkick. Having missed 2 penalties earlier this season, Putsilo makes no mistake this time around and thumps the ball past the keeper.

Zenit 0-0 Ural

11 mins
Mexican playmaker Giovanni Dos Santos collects the ball on the right wing and cuts inside, dribbling past the Rubin midfielders. Dos Santos threads a sublime pass through the eye of the needle to release Formica who slots past the advancing Perfiljev. Spartak have pulled one back and the Rubin players are busying blaming one another for the goal.

19 mins
Dos Santos is in the thick of the action again, 25 yards out he unleashes a rocket from his left boot which beats the Rubin goalkeeper but rebounds off the post.

29 mins
Apam takes a shot throw deep in Rubin’s half and Nikita Bazhenov collects the ball. He looks up and picks out the run of fullback Roman Shishkin, without breaking his stride Shishkin hits a beautiful shot into the top corner. It’s 2-2 and Rubin have squandered a two goal lead, luckily for them Zenit v Ural is still goalless. If Zenit score now they will leapfrog over Rubin into second.

45+1 mins
With the first half winding down Rubin’s Sergiy Parshivlyuk plays a ball into Lacina Traore on the edge of Spartak’s area. Traore fools the Spartak defence with a deft backheel into the path of Putsilo who finishes with confidence. Rubin are back in front.

58 mins
Putsilo’s pass finds Mario Acosta in the area who has a great chance to restore a two goal cushion for Rubin, but Martin Jiranek makes a last ditch tackle. Acosta appeals for the penalty but the referee says no, it was a great tackle.

64 mins
Giovanni Dos Santos is causing the Rubin midfield all sorts of problems today and he beats a challenge before playing a 30 yard ball forward to Hernanes. On the edge of the 18 yard box Hernanes has plenty of time to control the ball and get his shot away but Perfiljev in the Rubin goal is equal to it.

67 mins
Spartak’s Brazilian midfielder Arouca receives the ball in the penalty box with his back to goal. He turns the defender and gets a shot in but Perfiljev makes another important save. Meanwhile Zenit have extended their lead in the game against Ural.
Rubin 3-2 Spartak
Zenit 2-0 Ural

73 mins
It’s all Rubin can do to hang on right now, with Zenit leading against Ural a Spartak equaliser would consign them to third place. Nikita Bazhenov’s deep cross looks like it’s going out for a goal kick when Dos Santos keeps the ball in play. Dos Santos sends the ball back across the area and Welliton heads against the bar. What a let off for Rubin, especially as the latest news from St Petersburg is that Zenit lead 3-0.

85 mins
20 yards from the Spartak goal Anton Putsilo passes the ball sideways to Eduardo Oviedo who shots with power. Stipe Pletikosa in the Spartak goal parries Oviedo’s shot and his defenders clear the ball to safety.

90 mins
The Rubin fans are praying for the whistle as Spartak get men forward in the search for an equaliser. Dos Santos picks the ball up 20 yards out and curls the ball goalward, the Spartak fans jump to their feet... 3-3! But their joy is short lived, the ball hit the side netting and seconds later the referee brings an exciting match to a close. Zenit beat Ural 3-1 in their game but it’s Rubin who are in second place and who will play in next year’s Champions League!
Rubin 3-2 Spartak
Zenit 3-1 Ural

The invicibles...
CSKA Moscow have rewritten the record book by finishing the 2013 Russian league season unbeaten. In collecting their 5th successive title, CSKA sent a clear message to the pretenders for their crown. Of the 30 games played they won 25, drew 5, scored 73 goals and only conceded 11!

Playing for pride...
With the domestic season over Rubin face two more games in the Europa League, away to Real Madrid and home to Grasshoppers Zurich. It is only their pride at stake, even if Rubin won both games they cannot qualify for the later stages of the competition.

Thanks for your supportive posts guys (and to everyone else following this story), I only wish the Rubin board shared your feelings (see update coming later!)

As I approach my sixth year in management, I believe that this Rubin side is capable of acheiving good things so will be staying in Russia for the immediate future. The aims for next season must include improved performance in the European competitions and finding some way past a hugely impressive CSKA team!

Well played mate, and I thought my CSKA team were good! How wrong I was compared to that team. That should prepare you for next season though, go get 'em!

Under pressure...
Despite finishing second in the league, reaching the last 8 of the Russian Cup and qualifying for Champions League football the Rubin Kazan board today announced that they were disappointed by the club’s progress.
In a statement released on the club’s official website the Chairman said “The board feel that the team should be performing slightly better. Of particular concern is our poor showing in the Europa League, the fans deserve better and the board will sit down with the manager soon to discuss our targets for next season.”
Speaking from Rubin’s training ground this morning, manager Dan Lake said “I’m completely in the dark. Who knows, perhaps the Chairman thinks he could do a better job?”

Friends re-united...
FC Moscow’s goalkeeper Yury Zhenov has agreed to join Rubin Kazan on a free transfer. The 32 year old wanted a fresh challenge and will be reunited with his former manager and teammates Vladimir Perfiljev, Gia Grigalava and Dmitry Belorukov. The deal goes through on January 1st 2014.

lost 0-1 v Real Madrid (Europa League Group Stage)
It was not a good start for Rubin Kazan at the Bernabeu tonight, they went a goal down after just two minutes to a strike from Gonzalo Higuain, however, they did put in a fairly impressive performance against top class opposition and could be considered unlucky not to get the draw.

won 3-0 v Grasshoppers (Europa League Group Stage)
With 4 minutes gone Lacina Traore scores with a diving header but the linesman judges him to be offside when the ball was played and the goal is ruled out. However, ten minutes later Traore makes amends as he controls the ball with his first touch and smashes it past the keeper with his second. On 40 minutes Nikola Drincic collects the ball 20 yards out and looks up before curling a shot into the top corner. Andrey Arshavin adds a well taken third on the stroke of half-time. Dmitry Belorukov saw red in the 63rd minute for a professional foul on Grasshoppers striker Wilson Pestana. The referee had no choice but to send off Belorukov as he brought down Pestana with a knee high challenge when he was clean through on goal.

Walking away?...
Recent newspaper reports link Rubin Kazan manager with moves to Red Star Belgrade in Serbia and Dinamo Bucharest of Romania. The Kazan Football Latest went on to suggest that Lake had been approached by the Serbian FA in conjunction with the vacancy of national manager, but that he had rejected a contract offer. Lake himself was unavailable for comment.

Season review
In an interview with national newspaper Sovetsky Sport Dan Lake discussed his feelings about the 2013 season, qualifying for the Champions League and settling in Russia.

Q: Your team only lost one league game last season and amassed 69 points, this would be enough to win the division in most seasons. How frustrated are you to have come second?
Lake: I am proud of all the players, coming runners up is an achievement when you consider that the team were in 8th place when I took over. It’s not about how many points we get, you simply have to do better than the team ahead of you. But all credit to CSKA who have been unbelievably good this year.

Do you think next year the team that finishes above CSKA will win the league?
I think that’s true, let’s hope we finish above them then!

So the rumours aren’t true, you will be at Rubin for next season?
I have a contract until the end of 2015 and I have no intention of ending it early.

Who do you think has been Rubin’s best player this year?
Every player has worked their socks off this season, but Andrey Arshavin’s performances have given everyone a lift. He’s no spring chicken but the things that boy can do with a football at his feet gives the opposition sleepless nights! I’ll also say look out for Eduardo Oviedo next season. He’s 19, got six goals and three assists in nine games this year and is capable of much more!

After an absence of four years Champions League football returns to Central, are you excited?
We have to get through the qualifiers first! Everyone at the club is determined to make amends for this year’s poor showing in the Europa League, the Champions League is the perfect platform for the players to show what they are capable of.

:P
gut luck matey ...

Rising star...
Vladimir Shubin of Rubin Kazan has been voted young player of the season in Russia. The midfielder has been hugely impressive as he helped his team reach second place last year and many believe a full international call up is not far away now.

Dan’s African Adventure?...
Rubin Kazan manager Dan Lake has today rejected the opportunity to manage Nigeria in the 2014 World Cup. This is the third time that Lake has turned his back on international management in favour of domestic duties having previously been approached by the Belarusian and Serbian football associations.
Lake told Sovetsky Sport “I am extremely flattered to have been approached but I am Eastern Europe is my home and I am committed to the Rubin project. If I could have combined the two jobs my answer may have been different but the world cup comes in the middle of the Russian league season.

On your marks...
It came as no surprise that the bookmakers have made CSKA Moscow their favourites to win the 2014 Russian Premier League. If they succeed it will be their sixth consecutive title.
The rest of the main contenders are priced at: 6-1 Zenit, 6-1 Rubin, and 10-1 Spartak Moscow.
The bookmakers seem to believe that Rubin have the quality to mount a serious title challenge this season and that no matter what happens they will be there or thereabouts come the end.

Approaching the start of the 2014 season Rubin have been quiet in the transfer market, with their only note-able signing that of English forward David Nugent on loan from Zenit St Petersburg. The side from Kazan have also agreed to sign Ukrainian defender Artem Yablonskyi from Metalurg Zp for a fee of 1.5m. The 17 year old player, who is seen as a long term replacement for Dmitry Belorukov, will leave Metalurg to join his new club in the summer.

Get set...
The fixtures for the Russian Premier League were published today and the opening day pitches Spartak Moscow against local rivals Dinamo, whilst newly promoted Rostov travel to St Petersburg to face Zenit.
Rubin Kazan will open the new season away to Saturn, their first game at Central will be a tough televised match against Zenit St Petersburg on Saturday 22nd March 2014.

Rubin Kazan’s pre-season fixtures:
won 2-0 v Nosta Novotroitsk
won 2-0 v Terek Grozny
lost 0-1 v Olympique de Marseille
won 3-1 v Macabi Haifa
lost 2-3 v Rostov

Going into the new season Rubin manager Dan Lake must be worried about the sharpness of his strikers. Lacina Traore, Mario Acosta, and Eduardo Oviedo all spent large spells of pre-season out injured. Although all have reported for duty a week before the game against Saturn the Rubin fans will be concerned that they have not had enough time to prepare themselves.

The 2014 season begins...

Good luck Dan, hopefully you can go all the way this season, CSKA just seem to have amazing teams in all my games.

I hope so Jack, the mantelpiece is looking a bit bare... just two runners up medals(Romanian Cup and Russian League) and one winners medal (Russian Cup) just isn't enough! :S

Good luck mate, I'm sure you can pose a massive threat to CSKA this season.

You may have noticed, that I have changed the layout ever so slightly this season by including quick reference match stats with each report, the key to reading these is...

Result v Opponent (Home or Away)
± Rubin goal scorers (time of goal)
h Rubin players injured (time of injury)
 Rubin players booked
Rubin players sent off (time of sending off)
« Rubin star player (match rating)
˜ post match league position

I'll also be presenting some of the bigger games as "no-pay-per-view" matches! (Just like the Zenit game in the post above). The idea is readers can download and watch the match unfold "live" with only a teaser about the game included in the post(s) up to that point - the games can be seen using FM2010. Please let me know your thoughts on this. :)

simply you're genius ...
for all the lay out that you've created ...

only need one major trophy to complete this one ... :)
