Awesome Dan, haven't looked at this in a while, Arshavin it a spectacular coup my friend.

Just read through it all mate, thats a great read so far and I am sure you will win the league this season which is nothing less than you deserve - By the way, great signing in Arshavin.

Great story man. Very interesting and, more importantly, very different. Looking forward to some more posts mate. Bravo on the signing of Arshavin!

As the Russian Premier League heads into August 2013 CSKA Moscow (1st) and Rubin Kazan (2nd) remain unbeaten after 19 games each, can either team finish the league season without tasting defeat?

Rubin boss Dan Lake today said “we are not interested in breaking records, just winning points and pushing CSKA for that top spot.”

won 5-1 v Kryjla Sovetov
Rubin Kazan were ruthless as they set about crushing opponents Krylja this afternoon. Since joining Rubin for €5.75m Ivorian Lacina Traore has been slated for his poor scoring record, but today he answered his critic’s in emphatic style. Traore scored two of his team’s five goals, including a superb volley from 20 yards out. New boy Andrey Arshavin also showed what he can bring to this Rubin team with two classy strikes.

won 3-1 v Anorthosi (Europa League 4th round qualifier, 1st Leg)
Before Rubin could claim a place in the draw for the group stage of the UEFA Europa League, they would have to overcome the challenge of Cypriot side Anorthosi. It was Anorthosi who struck first in front of their home fans, Mouhamadou Seye received a long ball and caught the Rubin defence napping to score an easy goal. But Rubin bit back and the equaliser came in the 37th minute following a move straight off the training pitch. With the Anorthosi defenders expecting a shot Nikola Drincic swung the ball out wide to left back Gia Grigalava, Andrey Arshavin got on the end of his cross and rounded the keeper to score from close range. On the stroke of half time, Fred Hofstede twisted and turned in the Anorthosi area which drew a rash challenge from James Madidilani. Brazilian Marcus Vinicus stepped up to put away the resulting spotkick. Hofstede scored in the 65th minute to make it 3-1 and give Anorthosi a mountain to climb in the return leg at Central.

won 3-1 v Locomotiv Moscow
An attacking display from the Rubin players saw them deservedly take all three points at Locomotiv tonight. Goals from Anton Putsilo, Lacina Traore and Mario Acosta sealed the win for Rubin as they recorded twice as many shots on target as their hosts.

won 2-0 v Anorthosi (Europa League 4th round qualifier, 2nd Leg)
Already sitting on a commanding lead (3-1) from the first leg the Rubin players could be forgiven for believing that they were already through to the draw for the Europa League group stage. They did not allow complacency to creep into their game, however, and put in a workmanlike performance to ensure their passage to the next round. Lacina Traore continued his recent good form to score his 4th goal in four games and Mario Acosta completed the scoring on 69 minutes.

The draw for the Europa League group stage...
The draw for the group stages of the Europa League was held today and managers from all over Europe assembled to see who their teams would face next in the competition. Many famous names were in the pot including Manchester United, Valencia, Tottenham, Lazio, PSV Eindhoven, Lyon and the two Madrid sides Atletico and Real.

Group...
With Swiss side Grasshoppers Zurich already drawn in group D Rubin Kazan of Russia were the team to join them from the third pot of teams

French lessons...
The next team to be drawn in Rubin’s group was French club Stade Rennais FC. The French side include Russian international Eugeny Aldonin who will no doubt be looking forward to visiting his homeland.

A big name...
And so to the final pot of teams, the top seeds, and many big names lay in wait. Dan Lake, manager of Russian team Rubin Kazan, was caught on camera looking ashen as the eleven times champions of Europe, Real Madrid, were drawn in group D. After he had regained his composure Lake was more philosophical about the draw saying “the bigger they come the harder they fall!”

In and out...
The August transfer window some more players leave Central than arrive. Those to go onto to pastures new included Brazilian defender Renato Silva and Belarus international striker Vladimir Yurchenko bringing in a total of 8.5m to the club.

Joining the club were the legendary Andrey Arshavin on a free transfer and Argentine hot prospect Eduardo Oviedo. Striker Oviedo was signed from Steaua Bucharest for 6.5m and Dan Lake quickly hit out at claims that the youngster was only brought in to help Mario Acosta settle in at the club.

With back-to-back games against Zenit St. Petersburg and Real Madrid coming up Rubin fans would not have welcomed the news that Lacina Traore will be injured for 3 months. The Ivorian is unlikely to play again this season after he tore his hamstring in the Premier Division match against Alania. He had shown good form recently, scoring five goals in his last five games and striking up a good partnership with Mario Acosta.

won 5-0 v Alania
Rubin Kazan fans celebrated a resounding 5 - 0 win at Central this afternoon. A brace from Dmitry Tarasov helped Rubin to victory. Experienced midfielder Andrey Arshavin got Rubin off to a flyer by scoring a powerful effort which blasted against the inside of the post before hitting the back of the net on 10 minutes. Rangy striker Lacina Traoré doubled Rubin's lead with a placed shot from close range on 20 minutes and Argentine Mario Acosta added another in the 41st minute to make it 3-0 at half time. In the second half two goals from industrious midfielder Tarasov completed the rout.

lost 2-4 v Zenit St. Petersburg
Rubin Kazan’s unbeaten streak came to an end today at the hands of Zenit St. Petersburg. A hat-trick from their Senegalese strike Mame Biram Diouf helped Zenit to close the gap between themselves and 2nd placed Rubin to a single point. They also needed a little luck, however, and with the scores locked at 2-2 the referee awarded Zenit a rather dubious penalty and sent off Rubin’s Anton Putsilo. Then with ten minutes to go Zenit were awarded another penalty for an offence that looked outside the box.
Rubin’s manager, Dan Lake, was later censured by the Russian FA for his post match comments. Speaking to Russian TV station Channel One, Lake said “We lost today because the referee made the wrong decision... twice! I haven’t a clue what he saw for the first penalty and the foul for the second wasn’t even in the area, it’s a joke! To be fair I wouldn’t let him referee my son’s U10’s team!”

I feel fine...
Anton Putsilo has reacted badly to being handed a fine of one week’s wages after his sending off against Zenit St. Petersburg. It is thought that manager Dan Lake has been angry at Putsilo’s performances of late as well as comments the player has made in the media which appear designed to get him a move away from the club. Sources close to Putsilo said that he was shocked to have received the fine and felt that Lake had unfairly singled him out.

lost 0-1 v Real Madrid (Europa League Group Stage)
Just a day before this match Andrey Arshavin pulled up on the training ground after twisting his knee sharply. Arshavin’s absence makes the prospect of entertaining the Galactico’s of Madrid even more daunting for his Rubin teammates.
The Rubin Kazan players refused to be overawed, however, and matched their superstar opponents every step of the way. It was an entertaining match with chances at each end and both goalkeepers needed to be on top of their game. The deadlock was broken in the 81st minute when Madrid’s Portuguese centre-back Pepe rose above the Rubin defenders to nod home a corner.
At 0-0 Alexandr Bukharov hit the post from 2 yards out and the Rubin fans left the stadium wondering what might have been.

won 4-0 v FC Moscow
There was a rare start for 16 year old Andrey Demchenko today against FC Moscow and he rewarded his manager’s faith by scoring a wonder goal in the 9th minute. He picked the ball up wide on the left, some 30 yards or more from goal, instead of looking for a pass Demchenko rifled the ball in from distance. On 26 minutes it was 2-0, Eduardo Oviedo ran down the left wing and cut the ball back for Alan Kasaev whose shot beat the Moscow keeper hands down. Goal provider Oviedo turned goal scorer 2 minutes later as he dodged Alexandr Belozerov’s desperate tackle and tucked the ball away under the advancing keeper. Oviedo added another after minutes, Mario Acosta sent across a high looping ball which Oviedo bundled over the line.

won 3-0 v Saturn (6th round of Russian Cup)
Rubin Kazan completely dominated Saturn in this afternoon’s Russian Cup clash between the two sides. On 12 minutes Fred Hofstede had a shot saved by Milan Borjan, Anton Putsilo pounced onto the loose ball and stuck it into an empty net. Then, in the 19th minute, Eduardo Oviedo looping header from a corner made it 2-0. In the second half Saturn showed much more promise but Rubin ultimately proved to be too strong for them. Oviedo added another goal to his tally before the game ended, scoring from 25 yards with a bullet shot. Rubin Kazan will face Locomotiv Moscow in the next round.

Sorry seems to be the hardest word?...
On the eve of Rubin's clash with Saturn in the Russian Cup, Anton Putsilo made a public apology to his manager and the club's fans. In a statement released on the club's official website Putsilo said "I now realise that I was wrong to say that the manager was treating me unfairly. My performance against Zenit was far below the standards I set for myself and no-one is more disappointed by that than me. I will do everything I can to regain my place in the first team and help Rubin win honours this season." Sources close to the 26 year-old told the Kazan Football Latest that Putsilo only decided to apologise once he realised his behaviour would not get him anywhere near the first team.

Thanks mate, we lost a bit of ground on the leaders CSKA Moscow over the month so looking to clinch that second spot now for Champions League qualification.

It was a real shame to lose that unbeaten run though! :'(

Yeah to be honest if you finish above CSKA you win the league I think... Just out of interest how are Saturn in your game? Because they are amazing in mine. Either way, I think you will finish at least 2nd, just need to strengthen the squad a bit more to handle the pressures of 2 competitions. Cos with the Russian league the Champs League group ends as the season ends and the Champs League restarts just as the season does so it is a tiring schedule for the players.

I know hoe you feel about the unbeaten run - I was 26 unbeaten, mentioned it in one of my updates, mentioned a possible unbeaten season and then lost my next game! :(

P.s - I hope you don't mind, I have stolen the font you use :)

Saturn are struggling in my game (have a look at the table posted and you'll see that they are 11th!). I seem to be able to beat them quite comfortably too (4-1 in the league and 3-0 in the cup this year!), it's funny how a team that is good on one save game can be so different on another.

For me it is CSKA Moscow who are unplayable, followed closely by Zenit and Spartak Moscow. Currently CSKA have won 20 out of 25 games and drawn the other 5! Only 5 games left! :O

Oh my god that CSKA record is ridiculous - On my game Spartak beat all of the top teams (They're my bogey team, doesn't help by the fact they are our main rivals as well!) but they lose to all the **** ones!!! Strange stuff...

November 2013 and the Russian Season is nearing it’s end, yet another CSKA title looks odds on but it is the fight for second place, and a Champions League qualifying spot, that interests most observers. It is a straight race for second between three teams Zenit St. Petersburg, Rubin Kazan and Spartak Moscow, with Zenit in pole position.

drew 0-0 v CSKA Moscow
It was first versus second in this Russian Premier Division game in the capital, and the efforts of both teams cancelled each other out. Although it would be unfair to label this match as a bore draw neither team took the initiative and they both seemed happy to settle for a draw.

won 3-0 v Grasshoppers (Europa League Group Stage)
A highly polished performance from the Rubin Kazan players saw their team run out 3 - 0 winners over Grasshopper-Club Zürich at Letzigrund. Things did not get off to a good start for Grasshoppers as striker Alexandr Bukharov seized on an error by Davis Nkausu to score a good header from just inside the six-yard box. Bukharov then doubled Rubin's lead with a placed shot on 37 minutes. Centre-back Dmitry Belorukov completed the rout with a good header from just inside the six-yard box on 40 minutes. Despite a comfortable lead, Rubin will be unhappy that full-back Gia Grigalava was sent off for persistent fouling on 90 minutes.
In the other group C game Real Madrid and Stade Rennais played out a 0-0 draw at Santiago Bernabeu.

drew 2-2 v Ural
Eduardo Oviedo returned to the side today after being cup-tied for the midweek trip to Switzerland, and he made an almost immediate impact scoring in the game’s 9th minute. 7 minutes from half time Kasaev made it 2-0 after the Ural keeper spilt the ball into his path and Rubin went into the break in confident mood. On 65 minutes Ural were handed a lifeline when the referee spotted a trip on striker Orlin Orlinov and awarded them a penalty. Ural captain Artem Fidler stepped up and coolly dispatched the spotkick. Then, on minutes, Rubin’s goalkeeper Vladimir Perfeljiv failed to cut out a cross and Orlinov was on hand to score the equaliser.

Lost 1-3 v Stade Rennais FC (Europa League Group Stage)
Jimmy Briand got Rennes off to the best possible start as he got in behind the Rubin defence and netted the opening goal with just 5 minutes on the clock. The Rubin players refused to let this setback distract them from their game-plan, they defended high up teh pitch and did not give the Rennes players a moments rest. In the 33rd minute Rubin’s pressure tactics paid off and Mario Acosta headed home from a Nikola Drincic corner. Rennes regained the lead after 69 minutes, Andrea Poli cut in from the right and shot across the body of the keeper. Briand got himself a second goal and assured his team of victory in the 84th minute.

Is there a doctor in the house?...
Rubin Kazan’s injury woes deepened today when their talismanic captain Nikola Drincic was ruled out for 4 weeks with strained ankle ligaments. He joins striker Lacina Traore in the treatment room, meanwhile the club have only just welcomed Andrey Arshavin back from injury and there will be pressure on him to get match sharp as quickly as possible.

Cold shoulder...
Andrey Arshavin was snubbed once again by Russia manager Leonid Slutskiy despite showing great form since his free transfer to Rubin Kazan. Sources close to the player suggest that he may be ready to retire from international football if he is overlooked once more.

won 1-0 v Spartak Nalchik
The 1-0 scoreline does nothing to tell the story of this match, which Rubin Kazan dominated from start to end. Sergiy Pylypchuk saw red in the 24th minute and it was always going to be difficult for Nalchik after that. The game’s only goal was scored by Anton Putsilo on 60 minutes after he was played in by Mario Acosta.

lost 0-1 v Stade Rennais FC (Europa League Group Stage)
Rubin went out of Europe with a whimper, they never really threatened a determined and well organised Rennes team. Jimmy Briand, who got two goals in the 3-1 win at Central, scored the only goal of the match on 13 minutes. Pedro Morales’ free-kick picked out Briand unmarked on the edge of Rubin’s 18 yard box and he unleashed a low drive into the bottom corner of the goal. Real Madrid’s 6-0 win over Grasshoppers means that Rubin cannot qualify for the knockout stages.

won 3-1 v Shinnik
With CSKA having wrapped up the title with games to spare, the race for second place between Rubin Kazan and Zenit St. Petersburg nears the finishing line. With this fine win Rubin ensure that things will go to the wire as only one point separates them from Zenit with two games to go. Alexandr Bukharov gave his team a dream start, scoring in the 7th minute from six yards out. On 26 minutes Rubin’s lead was doubled as Ildar Akhmetzyanov turned Anton Putsilo’s low cross past his own keeper. Mario Acosta added a third with a thumping shot into the top corner on 39 minutes, whilst Cristian Danalache pulled on back for Shinnik in added on time of the first half.

won 4-3 v Saturn
A team of Hollywood script writers couldn’t have come up with a more exciting end to this game, as Rubin leapfrog Zenit into second place with a dramatic late winner. Kacam Sellami got Saturn off to a flyer when he left the Rubin defence flatfooted to score in the 2nd minute. On 20 minutes Eduardo Oviedo equalised for Rubin with a goal that had the faintest whiff of offside about it. Mario Acosta then bundled over a low cross to give Rubin the lead on 31 minutes.
In the second half Saturn again scored early as Anatoly Gerk applied the finish to Belousov’s cross. In the 61st minute Rubin retook the lead, Andrey Arshavin found Alan Kaesev on the edge of the area and his drive through a crowded penalty area found the back of the net. But five minutes later the scores were level for the third time in the game, Leonid Kovel’s powerful shot gave Vladimir Perfiljev no chance.
With news coming through that Zenit were a goal down to CSKA, the Rubin players knew they needed a win to lift themselves into second place. Manager Dan Lake threw on a triumvirate of attacking options in Lacina Traore, Fred Hofstede and Dmitry Tarasov and it made an immediate impact. Chance after chance came without the Rubin players finding the goal they needed until, three minutes into injury time, Tarasov let fly with his right foot and the ball soared into the top corner!

Seconds out...
For the team that finishes second in the Russian Premier League comes the chance to appear in next year’s Champions League. As it stands two teams can finish in second place behind CSKA, Rubin Kazan or Zenit St. Petersburg. Rubin currently occupy the much coveted spot and are ahead of their opponents by just two points, if they beat Spartak Moscow in their final game they will be confirmed as runners up. Lose and Zenit lie in wait!

(Look out for a worrying display of might by CSKA also! A sign of what we are up against in 2014!)
