FA Cup 4th Round - FM Base vs West Bromwich Albion

The Build Up

In the two weeks preceding the big game, the two clubs still had fixtures to complete. FM Base faced Weston Super Mare and Eastbourne, whilst WBA had Leicester.

FM Base's game with Weston was postponed, so just the midweek game with Eastbourne saw a comfortable victory and a useful run out for some of the players seeking spots in the team.

WBA

West Brom crushed the current champions at home by the same scoreline as our match. It would appear the onus is attacking from both teams - a surprise but shrewd move by Pulis's 8th placed side. However, a 2-0 defeat in Bournemouth means that they will have a point to prove this time out.

Squad News

Injured for the hosts are Willie, Wikiwiki. Naterr and Tracz, with Alarcon unlikely to be fit. Murley remains aboard with Colombia U20s.

For West Brom, they are missing Hassan at the AFCON. Foster is a late fitness doubt.

The Teams

Both teams line up with a 4-4-2 formation for this one. Injuries hit the FM Base team hard in the build up, so Treble comes straight in off the back of his injury; Birch only makes the bench. Last rounds goalscoring heros Urquidi and Dover start, with Notthatbright having to settle for the bench despite also shining in recent games. Charlie Bond, who started the season so well, pays for some recent mistakes; Jameson takes advantage. Harris makes the bench despite a recent gashed head and will wear protective gear. Dahnert or Hawkins can deputise as a striker if required.

WBA lead with a strong line up, pairing Rondon with McClean up top. Brunt starts at left back, whilst fit again Foster only makes the bench. Wing wonderkid Leko makes the bench for the visitors. Nyom starts having just returned from the AFCON.

The Match

1
- Urquidi kicks off for the hosts.

2 - Fish sends one long to Dover, who pings it across to Urquidi and in! 1-0 to the non-league team!

5 - Urquidi to Fish, who sends it through to Dover.. what a finish! Turns the defender inside out and rifles it home into the bottom corner. What a start! 2-0

View attachment 101627

7 - It's Telstar with the cross... and Urquidi is on the end of it! 3-0! FM Base are on fire!

View attachment 101626

43 - The Treble crosses in for Urquidi but Myhill finally gets hold of one to deny the Mexican striker. He sends up field, it's now with Rondon... 3-1! Is the game back on?

HT - 3-1 at the break, and West Brom look shellshocked. They weren't expecting a battering like this off the start. Lowerson and McClean get booked as the last action of the half. McAuley on for Dawson in the interval.

47 - McClean is past Lowerson, he's through! Can he finish? No! What a save by Dale to tip it round the post, WBA struggling to get that 2nd goal.

View attachment 101624

55 - Rondon tries a shot from range after a poor clearance, but Dale catches it easily.
58 - Morrison and Robson-Kanu on for the visitors, replacing Yacob and McClean.

61 - Fletcher booked for a poor challenge.

77 - Notthatbright on for Dover for FM Base.

81 -The ball pings around the box, McAuley gets it to Evans who pings it home! Nervy few minutes left here! 3-2

View attachment 101623

85 - Hawkins on for Urquidi, who appears to have picked up a thigh strain. Standing ovation as he goes off the pitch.

88 - WBA charge forward, but Jameson gets the ball, it's a long clearance... it breaks free for Notthatbright! It's 1v1, can he end this? No! Fluffs his lines at the last.

View attachment 101621

89 - Silva coming off to be replaced by Dahnert on the right wing.

90 - Three minutes of added time.

90+3 -
That's it, it's over! What a superb match, FM Base win 3-2!

What a result! Disappointing not to get a run but Lip is a team player. Strong performance by Mike it would seem.

How bad is Urquidi knock?

We have our first transfer, one of the extra 16 has moved to championship Huddersfield.

3-5 weeks, he may miss the Southampton game.

End of Jan/Feb/Early March

Once again, we have a slightly disjointed post; once again for a good reason. We also have a 5th round FA Cup tie to cover at Southampton, plus our FA Trophy campaign.

That said, my biggest problem was the transfer window. With bids coming in (I'm not listing them as I got too many), players got their heads turned. A few people sulked, a few got over it, and Dale had no interest at all. That said, no-one moved, and the chairman didnt sell from underneath me. The only one of our 41 players to move was Mike Sully, who left the Tally partnership at Altrincham to join high flyers Huddersfield.

In the fixture side of things, we remain well off. We haven't lost for a while, and despite a disappointing draw or two, we're still on top. A position we now cannot move from. The 4-2 win over Bishop Stortford saw us bring home the silverware, and we are officially the VNS champions.

Meanwhile in the FA Cup, we dispatched of the Saints at St Marys. The hosts played a weakened team, and we treated their disrespect with disdain; substitute Dover continuing his fine form with the winning goal. Next up - Arsenal at the Emirates. As a Lincoln fan, it's a case of serious deja vu.

The players have still been exceptional, if a little sulky. Urquidi still retains his place as leading light this season, but Dover, Notthatbright and Alarcon have all been better than him in recent weeks. Fish and Darnho have dominated the centre of the park with Willie, Tracz and Birch all laid low, and have proved to be a hard pairing to break.

The centre backs are more flexible though, and have rotated in and out effectively. Jameson is still searching for his first goal, whilst Lowerson now leads out the four with 2. An injury for Naterr however put him out for 8 days, missing 3 games and allowing Bathernon in to perform. That said, with a goal finally under his belt, he may now push on a bit.

As previously mentioned, Sully has since left the ranks of Altrincham. However, despite plenty of interest, none of the others moved. DanW remains injured, Kronos scores plenty, and Talent puts in a transfer request.

Pre Match

Team Sheets

Lippo manages to pinch the gloves for this match for FM Base, who line up in a 4-2-3-1. Cup hero Urquidi leads the line again despite a lack of match fitness; last round's hero Dover is on the bench. Fish and captain Darnho lead from the centre, while the defence is a fairly standard set up. Silva and Telstar take to the wings, while Hawkins is preferred in the hole behind the striker.

Arsenal don't play a full strength line up, with an even weaker bench on show. Southampton tried that last time out and failed, it'll be interesting to see if lightning strikes twice.

1 - Urquidi gets the game under way.

8 - Cross comes in from Wikiwiki... what a hit by Hawkins! So close, that smashed into the bar from just outside the box. Silva follows up with the rebound, but it's saved.

20 - Nouri hits the cross in... post! Decent effort by Fortune, but nothing doing this time.

33 - Yellow card for Carr

44 - Nouri puts in the corner... met by Iwobi! 1-0 to Arsenal!

View attachment 101499

45 - FMBase kick off.. Fish plays it through to Urquidi. It's played through to Darnho, he's gone clean through in the box.. 1-1! It's game on here, what a response! The captain leading by example!

View attachment 101500

45+1 - Darnho's at it again! Straight up the other end for Arsenal, and Bola's cross is hacked off the line by the Irish midfielder.

HT - Arsenal 1-1 FM Base FC

46 -
Arsenal kick off, Dover on for Hawkins for the visitors.

48 - Telstar swings in the corner, it pings straight back out the box towards Dover... bang, what a finish! The substitute scores almost immediately! 1-2

View attachment 101498

48 - Palmer on for Dasilva for the hosts.

57 - Nouri's gone clean through here, can he level the game? No! Lippo gets his body in the way, and it goes behind for a corner. Fortune comes off, Nketiah is now on the pitch.

60 - Silva on the right of the box, sends it over to Fish. Fish sends it wide to Telstar. He threads it through to Urquidi... what a stunning finish! In one move, he swivels and smashes it into the corner! 3-1 now, does Wembley beckon?

View attachment 101497

74 - Urquidi with the long ball over the top, he's sent Dover through! No! Poor miss by the Dutchman, that could have killed the game off!

77 - Willie replaces Silva on the right wing.

82 -
Bathernon booked for a rash challenge.

88 - Naterr on at the end to replace Bathernon at the back.

92 - That's the game! Another big scalp for FM Base, and a first trip to Wembley!

As a long suffering Lincoln supporter, that win was made doubly satisfying after today.

Great updates :) A shame about Pinto-Murley not being able to shove Silva off the AMR position though!

How did he do in the Columbia U20's?

3rd place in the tournament overall. For Murley it wasnt a spectacular tournament particularly, but he kept his place throughout the competition.

Just wondering has my guy been capped at any level of English international football? Brilliant story so far !

Class going so far! Has my player been capped at all? Who am I wanted by?

Glad Mick Sully got the move to Huddersfield - hopefully they give him some game time and don't let him rot in the reserves! Do you remember what the transfer fee was?

Yes FM Base. Keep it up.
An Harris doing well in rotation with a nice high Avg Rating
