I find that using Counter on tough away games works well, easy away games I use Control and tough home games I use control and easy home games I use Attack.

To simplify:
Away:
Tough = Counter
Easy/Similar = Control

Home:
Tough = Control
Easy = Attack

Interesting - I've never tried using counter or control from the very start. Are you still scoring a lot of goals?

Yep. I'm not entirely sure what the mentality does to the game but in my experience I change it on all tactics no matter what team. (Even when I was playing on my Barcelona save I used counter mentality from the start in the Champions League)

Some may disagree with me but there is no right or wrong way to mentality, it's personal preference. Using attack is great sometimes but to me it leaves me quite exposed and uncomfortable about the result. Control is probably my favourite.

Tried this with Peterhead in Scottish League 2 and without wanting to be Captain Bringdown, it's been utterly terrible. Conceding an average of 4 goals a game despite changing from attacking to standard / control etc. Also the same problem of creating some decent chances only to blast them wide / over / straight at keeper yet when other team find themselves in similar position they bury them.

I haven't tried it with a team that low yet (4th tier?) but that's the only one I've heard that it's not working for so far.

I'm going to load up a new save with Peterhead and see if my luck is any different....

First thoughts: Peterhead are pretty terrible. :P

Lost every preseason game, so I wasn't too excited for our first cup game against a lofty League One side. Somehow we still pulled out a shock victory, in front of 441 diehard Peterhead fans.

I left it on Attacking until they scored their 2nd goal in the 82nd minute. I put it on Counter after that and saw out the game for a vital win.

On to the season! This should be a fun one...quite the challenge, I must say.

To be fair, the team wasn't fully accomplished with the tactic although they weren't far off it. Could just be they don't have good enough players for it, I found the defence getting pulled all over the place by the other teams strikers and wingers.
Tried changing training to Tactics and defensive positioning for match training but didn't seem to help.

I like that you are willing to test it with teams like Peterhead congrats to the creator!

May load this up in my 3rd slot!

I think they're one of the better teams in that league! Just don't think they've got the defence for it mate!

First league game, first win!

It was pure luck.

Couple thoughts:

It's going to take forever to get tactic to full fluidity. I can only afford one coach for the entire team and his tactic skill is 2.

My players have absolutely no self-control! I've averaging about 4 yellow cards per game. Something's gonna have to give to change that...

Seagal, you're right - their defense is sorely lacking! But I'll give it a season and see how it goes...fun so far!

Haha! Yeah there are bookings all over the place, I had a man sent off three games in a row! Can't wait to see how you get on with it!

Well, after the worst start I've ever had in any FM game (I think), things have finally settled down. We haven't lost in 7 games and we're sitting in 2nd place in the league.

I don't think we'll catch Berwick, but at least we should make the playoffs. Which, after the terrible start we had, is quite amazing, frankly.

I'm scoring a lot but the defense is pretty awful. If I could tighten things up at the back, we'd probably be in 1st. Still, half a season to go!

At any rate, with some perseverance, this tactic can even work for a 4th tier Scottish team!

This tactic is a roller coaster ride so hit and miss with my mid table Crewe team in the prem one game we beat city at home and then lose to Newcastle predicted 1414 giving away 6 cccs! Unfortunately it's the old chestnut of better defence needed but then it would ruin the attack bleh this football manager Is frustrating

Crewe, you say? Let me try that one after my Peterhead save (H)

This wont work well in LLM anyway as a general rule. Playing very fluid they are just going to be scattered all over the place. Id bet changing it to balanced would improve things no end.

The thing about this tactic is that you need to invest heavily in your defence. I am managing Pompey with no money whatsoever, but I managed to bring in Seb Hines on loan from Middlesborough who is an absolute Beckenbauer at a League Two level.

I'm testing this in the lower leagues now. Changing mentality to Balanced and tweaking a few individual settings to try and get a similar tactic that will work for smaller teams.

Still, the original tactic is a beast for anything above the 4th tier :P
