Swedish Cup Quarter Final - Örebro SK (Home)

A rotated lineup took the field against Örebro SK in the Cup Quarter Final. With a clash against title contenders Häcken in just 3 days time, it was important that my first choice players were fresh and ready for that fixture.

Not much was happening in the first 20 minutes, although KBH did have one memorable attempt that narrowly missed the corner flag.

A 29th minute clearance found the opposition striker in behind the defence, but he took too long, and Tinnerholm forced him to skew his shot wide.

Adu picked up an injury in stoppage time and was replaced by Possebon.

A Forsberg effort from outside the area in the 56th minute was saved by the keeper, who denied KBH’s two followup efforts!

The young Korean was replaced by Eriksson with 59 minutes gone.

Emil Forsberg finally broke the deadlock in the 61st minute, with a gorgeous shot from outside the area which never left the ground, but drilled into the bottom right corner.

4 minutes later and it was two, as the ball was worked to Eriksson on the penalty spot via Bengtsson, Forsberg and Gustafson, and the striker finished coolly for his first of the season.

With Petkovic not offering much down the right, Thauvin came on, and Forsberg shifted over to replace the youngster in the 70th.

And the Frenchman made it 3 in the 82nd minute! A gorgeous chip from Gustafson found him in the box, and he controlled it beautifully, causing two defenders to overrun, before he lofted the ball into the top right corner. Silky skills from the talented winger!

A good piece of play from the opposition winger created an opening, but his tight angle effort was held by the diving Olsen.

Fabulous displays yet again from the impressive new signings Bengtsson and Thauvin, along with Gustafson and Forsberg, saw us through to the semi final stage of the Swedish Cup for the second year in a row. Hopefully we will have a much better go of it this year! The favourites all picked up expected results, and so it’s a much stronger semi final draw than last years.

POM: Simon Gustafson (9.0, 0G, 2A)

Looking good mate. Fingers crossed for the Swedish cup!

Liverpool blitz Real Madrid 4-0, with some unlikely goal scorers! They are 4th in the PL, with a 3 way battle for two CL places going on with Tottenham and Manchester United. Chelsea look to have the league wrapped up, whilst Man City are comfortably second.
Adu out for around a week
We draw Kalmar FF in the semis, definitely the easiest of the teams in the hat.

Swedish Premier Division - Game 3 - Häcken (Away)

So we come up against another title contender in Häcken, in a match which sees Simon Gustafson return to his former club. He is on the bench however, with Simon Thern getting the start as the midfield playmaker. Léo Bonatini up top is their biggest threat.

In the 10th minute, Ricardinho’s free kick was pushed away by the keeper. Thauvin had a go from the rebound but the angle was incredibly tight, and he struck the post.

I was disappointed to go into half time level despite leading in shots 10-3 and having 57% possession.

Changes had to be made, and so Gustafson replaced Thern, still coming back from injury, in the 57th minute.

Thauvin was replaced by Forsberg 10 minutes later.

KBH came on for Eriksson in the 72nd.

A brilliant cross-field ball from Milosevic just a minute later found Forsberg, who beat two players, but his close range effort was deflected wide by the keeper.

Possebon wasted an excellent opportunity in the 75th by shooting wide from range, with options ahead.

And it was Mr Dependable, Guillermo Molins, who finally opened the scoring in the 78th. Goalkeeper KSG collected the ball on the edge of his box, and started dribbling forward with it, before launching a long ball. It cleared the defence, and went straight into the path of Molins, who took it into the box, and rifled it over the keeper and into the top left corner. What would I do without this man?

Forsberg had a chance to close it out in the 89th, when he sent KBH through. The young Korean was tackled in the box, but Emil gathered the loose ball, and fired straight at the keeper, who punched it away.

An important win in the end, although definitely a match in which I feel we could have scored more goals - though it’s rare that I don’t feel that way! We seem to rely a great deal on the brilliance of Molins in tough matches - he’s definitely my most important player right now.

Swedish Premier Division - Game 4 - Åtvidaberg (Away)

I have the pleasure of renewing my rivalry with the one and only Peter Swärdh and his Åtvidaberg outfit as we hit the road again. The Swedish Cup semi is in 3 days time, but a strong side takes the field here, as this competition is my priority.

In the 7th minute, Molins collected a pass from Eriksson on the edge of the box, but fired over.

Thauvin opened the scoring in the 19th minute when he first timed Gustafson’s through ball across the keeper and into the top right corner.

Eriksson doubled our lead 3 minutes later. He found space near the edge of the box and fired a low effort towards the goal. The keeper stuck out a leg to keep it out, but Magnus followed it up and slotted home from a fairly narrow angle.

Gustafson’s gorgeous killer ball in the 42nd minute found Molins for an easy tap in, but he was correctly ruled offside.

In the 44th we did make it three, as Thauvin laid off for Gustafson, who squared for Eriksson to tuck a low finish inside the right post.

A long ball over the top in the 49th was headed down by the Åtvidaberg striker, and then struck home by another attacker. First league goal we’ve conceded this season!

Molins was having an uncharacteristically poor game, and so Petkovic came on in the 54th minute.

In the 63rd, Bengtsson replaced Ricardinho, and Biro-Biro replaced Possebon, with Ajer pushing forward to allow the Brazilian to slot in as the anchorman.

A Bengtsson corner in the 68th minute caused all sorts of trouble, with one shot being blocked, and Helander hitting the bar with a header when Bengtsson sent the ball back in.

We got a second corner, and it was headed clear. Thauvin got the ball back though, and took it out to the left. With some sublime skill, he bamboozled two defenders, before putting in a tantalising cross. Young Petkovic was running towards it, headed the ball into his own path, and still moving across goal, slotted it into the bottom left corner for his first goal of the season!

A shocking miscommunication in the 71st minute allowed our opponents another goal. A long ball went past the defence and was bouncing towards keeper KSG. As he moved towards it, Helander chased it down and chested it past my keeper. With the keeper overrunning the ball and Helander stopping dead, it left an empty net for the fortunate striker to slide the ball into. Another silly goal given up - I had better hope KSG learns to speak Swedish quickly!

The match settled from there, and the final score was 4-2.

Gustafson (2A), Eriksson (2G) and Thauvin (1G, 1A) won the match for us today, with sensational displays from all three of them, whilst everyone else proved pretty average, though young winger Petkovic took his goal well and looked lively. It was disappointing to see our opponents score from both of their shots on target. We sit second, two points behind surprise early leaders Norrköping, the only team to have won all 4 matches.

POM: Magnus Eriksson (9.0, 2G, 0A)

Swedish Cup Semi Final - Kalmar FF (Home)

My team of backups and prospects takes the field against Kalmar FF, hopefully to exorcise the demons of last seasons semi final loss.

KBH wasted our first good chance by firing high and wide from outside the area in the 3rd minute.

He had another chance from outside the box just a minute later, but his low effort was saved by the sprawling keeper.

The rest of the half continued without any clear chances being created, and we went into the break all square.

I had to make changes and so Thauvin and Rosenberg replaced Forsberg and KBH in the 62nd minute.

The deadlock was broken just a minute later. A Bengtsson corner resulted in some head tennis in the box, before Blomqvist’s header was redirected into the bottom corner by the defender standing on the post.

Tinnerholm put in a dangerous cross in the 68th minute, and both Rosenberg and the defender slid towards it. It was touched into the net by the defender, but Rosenberg was adjudged to have fouled him by sliding into him. Debatable decision.

Neri came on for Thern in the 73rd.

And the young Italian doubled our lead 10 minutes later with a vicious strike from the edge of the area, which flew into the top corner.

The youngster brilliantly played Rosenberg through just two minutes later, but his calm finish was disallowed due to a marginal offside.

We saw out the win from there, and booked our place in the final! Man of the Match went to Blomqvist for his “assist” on the own goal, but I was most impressed by Neri, who was very dangerous in his 20 minute cameo, and capped his performance with a truly spectacular goal.

Tactical News...

I’d like to make the switch to a 4-2-3-1 at some point, essentially swapping my defensive midfielder for an attacking midfielder. This is the formation that I’ve preferred in every single save I’ve ever had on FM before, with great success, but for now I think that there’s no need to change a winning formula, and additionally, I don’t have a strong enough ball winner in midfield to be confident enough of retaining defensive security. When Crisetig arrives mid season, I will certainly have more confidence to try to make that switch, but we will have to see. I’d definitely like to give Neri a chance in his preferred AMC role, as he has performed well in both centre midfield and left wing in his limited chances so far.

Contract News...

I’ve offered Laste Dombaxe, who is out on loan, a new contract. This is only because I hope to increase his value in order to sell him, as I can’t see him taking Molins’ spot in the team, and he doesn’t have Petkovic’s potential or nationality.

Great story! Do you plan on continuing at Malmø, or possibly going to another, bigger, club in the future?

Injury News...

Heading into a very congested fixture period, I’m rocked by the news that Ricardinho will be out for 4-5 weeks. Bengtsson is a more than adequate replacement, and Biro-Biro is capable of deputising for him, but our depth is being tested.

Disaster strikes as our other star man Guillermo Molins is also ruled out for 4-5 weeks. Our depth will be severely tested in the coming weeks.

Barca have a new president

Thanks very much, I'm glad you're enjoying it! :)

The plan is to stay at Malmo, and I'm unlikely to leave, although if I turn us into European champions and it gets too easy I might look into moving to rescue a club that I like, or bring another Swedish side into European contention

Doing nicely Patrick. That 4-2-3-1 could make you unbeatable domestically!
