ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE

Table

Tottenham remain top of the table, but lose their first game of the season. Only two unbeaten teams remain: Chelsea and Manchester United. Man Utd however have drawn 4 out of their first 6 and should ideally be winning more games. Arsenal sneak into the top 4 after a strong month. Elsewhere, Manchester City climb into 12th place after winning 2 of their games this month. The relegation zone consists of Crystal Palace, Newcastle and West Brom.

Theme of the week: Throwing away leads. Manchester City's woeful start to the season continues as they contrive to throw away the lead in a 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at home. Manchester United are also unable to hold on to a lead as QPR ****** a late equalizer through Denis Cheryshev. West Brom throw away a lead in their loss to Arsenal, Wolves throw one away in their loss to Chelsea, West Ham throw a 2 goal lead away in their draw against Southampton and finally, Stoke throw away two 1 goal leads in their draw against Norwich.

Theme of the week: Getting sent off. As many as three players get sent off this week. James McArthur is sent off in Crystal Palace's shock win at Arsenal, Sandro is sent off in QPR's win at West Brom and Mamadou Sakho is sent off in Liverpool's 3-0 win over Wolves. Elsewhere, yet another lead is thrown away as Man Utd draw 2-2 with Everton.

Very inconsistent performances this far! Now we need to get some decent results from our two matches vs Barca.

Once again Stoke have a month with a win, draw and a loss...

Better month from Southampton but we still need to shape up, aiming for Europe this season.

September Update

Premier Division

In the first league game in September, Swansea travelled up to Liverpool to play Everton in front of the cameras on Sunday late afternoon. In a very evenly matched contest there was only one goal in it and it was the Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson who hit his first goal of the season in the 61st minute.

The following Sunday we welcomed Sunderland to the south of Wales. Gylfi Sigurdsson scored for the second game running to give us a welcome 1-0 at half-time when he scored in the 28th minute. Sunderland were arguable the slightly better team and in the 71st minute they got the equalised that they probably deserved when Simone Zaza struck the ball past a helpless Fabianski.

The final league game in September we travelled up to the Potteries to take on mid=table Stoke. Big money signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic opened the scoring his first league goal for Stoke in the 6th minute. André Ayew then scored his second league goal of the season just 8 minutes into the second half to draw things level. But Dutch right winger Ibrahim Afellay then popped up with the match winner when he slotted home after 73 minutes and Stoke held on yo claim a 2-1 victory.

Capital One Cup

Having qualified for European competition this season we were awarded a bye in the second round and were then drawn against Championship side Burnley at the Liberty Stadium. A typical hard fought cup tie ensued with Bafétimbi Gomis scoring the first goal after only 2 minutes. Burnley then struck back in the 25th minute when Andre Gray scored for the Clarets. Gomis then restored our lead in the 35th minute and that was the end of the scoring in the first half. The second half had only just kicked off when Scott Arfield restored parity with a well taken shot. Then in the 69th minute our superior possession and attempts on goal were rewarded as Sergio Araujo netted the winning goal.

Our first game in Group H was in Belgium against AA Gent. A game that we really should have taken all three points as we had three times as many shots as our opponents but we had to make do with a share of the points. Sergio Araujo scored after 31 minutes and we were looking good for the lead that we held going into the second hald. AA Gent then pushed harder and as a result they equalised in the 63 minute through Laurent Depoitre and then they took the lead in the 78th minute when Marko Poletanovic netted. We then pushed hard for an equaliser and Carlos Sánchez duly supplied with only 4 minutes to go.

The next game was at home against Germans BMG (happy I don't have to type out their name in full). This was a game that neither side wanted to lose and it showed. Only 8 shots on target from both teams in the whole match with only two of them really counting. Not a lot really happened in the game until the final 5 minutes. First, BMG went ahead in the 86th minute through Josip Drmic and then on the final minute Bafétimbi Gomis scored a very welcome equaliser.

So going into the double header against Bordeaux we are looking ok. A little bit of luck could have seen us sitting top of the group but a couple of good results against Bordeaux could mean progression in the cup.
