The referee's a....
"****** four o'clock in the morning!" I thought to myself as my alarm blurred away, just out of arm's reach. Jenny, my maid, must have set it. I knew I had to travel up to Newcastle, but it destroyed by sleeping pattern, it was a long, long journey, and it was forced upon me. If it was my choice, we wouldn't be buying him.
I looked over our new kits, and the latest design. Our Head of Design, Ramesh Chindapaul, had all but finalised the designs and there were only a few changes left to be made.
I'd had a call from David Triesman three nights before confirming that he had put in a £9million bid for Newcastle's Bradden Inman, a scotsman. I was baffled as to why he had put in a bid for the Scot, but he said he and the FA had been accused of favouritism and racism. Neither of us wanted him, but we need a non-English player. And he was one of the best around.
The trip up to Newcastle wasn't too bad. I had my laptop with me, and while plugged into the car's electrical system, too retain battery life, I could finish off pieces of work on the way up there. I was on calls, but I couldn't access my emails, and that was more than frustrating. I told my chauffeur to stop at a remote internet cafe, so I could check them.
"Wow. 17 unread emails, already." I said to myself, but the most interesting one was from Peter Vernon's agent, the young Wolves left-midfielder. He was confirming his interest in the club and £2.2m deal was all but sorted. Superb.
As I strode back out of St. James Park, I removed my fake smile from my face and got back into the car. We were going to be stopping at a classy hotel nearby, for the night. But I was in no mood to do anything else, and I stayed inside for the rest of the day.
After a long hard month, we'd yet again been knocked out of the Johnson's Paint Trophy in the first round, in a game we really shouldn't have lost. The referee has been labelled a "cheat" and suspended from all JPT matches for two seasons. Not what we needed.
We topped N-Power League 1, and I was delighted with that. But I was particularly pleased with how well the youngsters were going. Lee Wilcox, in particular was breaking into the first team. And at 16 years of age, was pushing James Tomkins out of his centre-back slot.
The deal of Bradden Inman had gone through on the first of the month, and Peter Vernon a week later. One unexpected signing that we'd made was Charlie Ellis for £4.1m from Birmingham. Several scouts went to watch him train and he took their eye instantly. They reported back and convinced me to make an offer right away, but the Midlands club get rejecting. We went higher and higher until eventually we got him for just over £4million.
A pleasing month, and apart from beating scandelled out of the Johnson's Paint Trophy, there were some very good results. The only worry I had was that we weren't free-scoring enough. My Man of the Month goes to Ryan Bertrand for some really fantastic performances, capped off by a 2-goal performance against Southampton.

Thanks also to Dec for the kits.
