Sets it up perfectly. Both teams 100%. European Champions coming to a wild Anfield. The German battle of master against understudy with eyes on him. The Lukaku hype coming up against the returned big dawg ......

Sky might just spontaneously combust in ecstasy building this up all week.

The first 45 min was a real joy to watch. Proper end to end stuff. Shame the red card meant we had to shut up shop in the second half. Would have been a belter of a game otherwise.

If you ignore the L'pool praise rounding out the quotes that don't concern you per se, The Times excellent Jonathan Northcroft encapsulates it perfectly-

“Goals please the casual consumer of football but the true connoisseur feasts on intensity and this match did not need a spectacular score -line to grab your throat, stir your guts and sear itself into the memory. There was the pace and skill of Liverpool, the intelligence and resilience of Chelsea, and the sense of two teams and managers, at the top of their craft, holding nothing back as they contested the points.

“It was an early-season encounter played like a title decider, where every touch, every tackle, every break, every block felt like it really counted. Liverpool so good on the right through Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, and so shrewd in the middle with Fabinho, looked close to their 2019-20 form — and in Harvey Elliott may have a new prodigy.”

Imo decisions where both a penalty and a red card is given should be scrapped except for the most egregious of violations. They completely ruin the game for one side. Reece James handball was unintentional. A penalty and a yellow card seems the more appropriate punishment.

Delighted with the Saul Niguez loan. Super high quality midfield options of Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic and now Saul.

We’ll probably need to dip into the market in January for some CB cover though. Hopefully Trevor Chalobah can really step up. Great opportunity for him over the next six months.

Not a great performance. Aston Villa on top for large parts of the game. Difference was that we had 2 chances and Lukaku took both of them superbly. Exactly what we were missing last season.

Tough run of games coming up in the league now. Good that we did not drop points here.
