Liverpool alone play 8 games by the end of october, not counting u23 games. Fitness doesnt really come into it. Lack of opportunities to get said fitness? Different story, and that's the real crux of the matter.
Therein lies the problem. Where are the games to get that fitness outside of U-23's/ behind closed doors half baked ones? The odd Lge Cup game at a stretch but you're nowhere near ready for a PL game. The opportunity's just aren't there.
You can train and get in physical shape but without the games to get in match shape you're constantly chashing it. 4 months of virtually nothing is a big disadvantage. You're just playing catch-up. If he was still in favour at Anfield, it'd be a lot longer than October the demands on L'pool players now. If you're not at peek match fitness you're disrupting the whole system.
